When I was a kid we used to collect empty glass bottles and take them back to the shop for the deposit. I wonder if there was a deposit on codd bottles back in the day, and if marbles cost more than the deposit on the bottles? I'd love to know how they got the marble and the seal in the bottle in the first place.
@VintageParagonUk
@VintageParagonUk Жыл бұрын
I think there was something like that in place, I think it took about 4 reuses for a codd bottle to pay for itself as it was so costly to produce them! There is a great video online somewhere that has actual footage of them being produced, the marble is inserted into the chamber and then the lip applied onto the top. Quite the process for a single use item but good for us to find them 😁👍

Where ever people live there will be some sort of dump somewhere, take a look at old maps to see if there are any old quarries, ponds or ditches that might have been used as a dump and have a walk about to see if you can see any signs of one there such as broken glass, pottery or ash 👍

That was lovely fun, Ed. :D I wonder if Codd marbles will go out of fashion, now that people know they can get modern ones... :o It was sad about the first preserves jar; you need to be more delicate in your unearthing. At least you found another undamaged one. I think that fancy piece of china with the lady on it was likely a small urn. All in all, a good day at the dig. :) See you next week. Take care & stay safe until then. :)

Thanks Noralee, always a pleasure to read your comments 😊 The modern Codd marbles are way too perfect and don't have that hand made charm so I think we are good on that 😁 I was a little heavy handed I will admit, they are nice though as far as jars go. Oh, I hope it wasn't a full urn, if it was I guess they didn't like who ever it was to throw them into the local dump 😯 glad you enjoyed it, see next time 🙂

Yes the Ely valley is just outside of Cardiff and the brewery there opened in 1887 , over the years it was acquired by other breweries a few times and eventually closed in 1982. I had a lot of fun with the modern Codds, I can see why the kids loved them back then 😂😂

I get a lot of bottles with "stuff" inside, sometimes it's a nightmare to get out, too. Crazy to think that the Codd design is still being used too, I'm sure Coca Cola also trialled the Codd bottle, and they're worth a small fortune now!
@VintageParagonUk
@VintageParagonUk 3 жыл бұрын
The "stuff" is usually pretty nasty too, I try to avoid it if I can, only if I really like the bottle but it is a nightmare! Most US companies went straight to crown tops if I remember correctly, I don't think there are as many US Codds, unlucky for them as they are always a welcome find for me. It was quite fun to pop the Codd bottle but it is just a bit of a novelty now, especially as it has a screw top 😂

@@VintageParagonUk I use Distilled white vinegar, with salt mixed in. The salt strengthens the acidity of the vinegar. Leave it in there about 3-4 days and it should dissolve. 👍 Gonna have to give those Ramune drinks a try...
