Hells yes! Hyenas are my favorite exotic animal. They're so intelligent and beneficial. Their societal hierarchy is really fascinating stuff, and let's just be honest. They're adorable! If you folks haven't seen him, the relationship he's built with these beautiful creatures is spectacular.

Maybe I'm weird, but I actually quite like hyenas. Their behavior is so tied with their social hierarchy that it reminds me of humans. While we obviously have different tastes, both our species intentionally scent themselves to be better received by their clan. Then there is competition inside the species, which has given them a unique matriarchal system. By mixing traits seen in felines and canines, hyenas have the appeal of both groups. So yeah, hyena fan club!

When I was a kid, I had a little Pekingese dog that was kinda crazy. One day, I let him out to use the bathroom, and when he came back, he was _completely_ covered in poop. Being the youngest in my family, I was forced to wash him, and the whole time I wondered "where the hell did you find THIS quantity of fresh crap to roll in? And WHY?" I'll never get an answer to the former, but perhaps the latter is due to some ancient canine DNA, and this tiny Pekingese was ready to hunt, rawr.

Haven't seen a Hyena in person myself yet, but, I DID come across a wild 'yote on a trail once. Funny thing was, it wasn't up in the Rockies, it was down in Denver. But it was a concrete path running through our local 'Green Belt' along side a small river, so it makes sense why one would be down there. At first I thought it was just a stray until I got up to it and took a closer look! Most people would do the atypical back away slowly and not make eye contact or whatever... Me? I'm jumpin' up and down in excitement as it was the first time I'd spotted one RL. Talking to it, hootin', hollerin, singing, dancing around it in circles (I'm pretty sure I even did the Macarena at one point...) and to be perfectly honest, the poor thing was more confused than anything else. It wound up walking off in one direction down a random path, occasionally stopping and glancing back to make sure I wasn't following it. Granted, this was almost 20 years ago and things were rather different back then, but still fun!

That comment strikes a familiar cord. When my dog would roll in some dead animal, he would be difficult to drag away, but not like if you went near his food and there would be a light growl, but he would appear to be slightly dazed or hypnotic, but snap out of it after less than a minute. I wonder what that's about?

Hyenas kill about 12 people - Vermin animal. Hippo kills hundreds a year - LOOK AT THE CUTE ANIMAL It's all a matter of perspective really Hyena attacks are far and few between and they have so many beneficial aspects to them... except they're a little disgusting so we treat them horribly. Hippos on the other hand are (when docile) cute creatures who just float through the water and their human death count is surpassed only by humans when it comes to land animals... Hippos are more dangerous than great whites, lions, wolves, and many other creatures who people think are dangerous... yet we don't have this internalized fear of them... unless you live in the regions where they exist... I imagine they have a respectable fear of those walking monsters.

What yes referring to o with the inuit actually "cooked" too, but it isn't heat cooked. Most of us have traditional to very meat in very specific conditions that lead to the ferment and oxygen deprivation to cooking the meat, leading to a much richer meat that gets us through winter and that helps keep us safe from our normal impure meats

All joking aside. I knew that turkey vultures could survive after eating anthrax. I had never heard of any animal being able to survive rabies...... Even in humans, once rabies starts to show its nasty little face with symptoms, rabies has a 100% fatality report. So to hear that hyenas can shake off anthrax and rabies, this put them on the top of the list. I think we need to start figuring out why and how they are so resistant to these very deadly diseases.

Well you covered the information, I think one reason they roll in things most creatures wouldn't is why children who live in the country have better immune systems than city folk. So they do it to keep immune system it peak condition. Also since they usually eat dead things that they either find or even sometimes steal fresh kills from other animals, they don't need to sneak up on the animal and kill it they don't need to worry about their smell and maybe smelling like rotting flesh it is less likely that something would want to eat them, so it might be a defense.

You covered the Hyena very well. One thing I would like to add to this is that Hyena young are capable of killing other young hyena and often do. Including their own litter mates. From the moment of birth there is fierce competition since the mother only has 2 teets to nurse them with. All of the hyena pups will also often gang up on a pup and all have a go harassing it and torturing it until it dies. Another area to look into is female hyena genitalia. It is extremely unique and can make them difficult to tell from males. Its unique shape and location also complicates giving birth to pups.

Sort of amusing info. I surely never would have guessed these characteristics of Hyenas, maybe any wild animals. Fine episode, even if it might be a little disgusting for some people.

Sooo... If you were getting charged by hyenas you could force yourself to puke and potentially distract them?

I'm thinking that it must be some instinctual part that makes a hyena roll in dead carcasses because I used to have a dog that would do the same exact thing. The strangest thing

[15:00] "i hope you're not having a snack" okay i feel like im the only one like this, but i don't lose my appetite when disgusting stuff is the topic during eating, im like "it's time for dinner, guess i'll pull up a video documentary about parasites".... now with that said, yeah hyenas are neat animals, though an easily overlooked species is the aardwolf.

I swear all animals would be amazing... Like most zombos would probably be taken care of by insects tbh... they lay eggs in rotten meat... I doubt a zombie would care if a fly laid on it and laid a few eggs... I doubt it would care... Only a matter of time before it's a festering pile of maggots and there's no brain or appendages left to hurt anyone... Birds would probably be in heaven ffs... all you can eat buffet 24/7 lol Unless it's like Resident Evil... and animals can get infected too... then we'd all be gone quick... that'd be like a Flood-level type thing lmfao

btw about the urinating and then drinking it, we actually urinate a lot of sodium which can be hard to come by for animals. I'd assume they drink that yellow water simply because that's the best way for them to "recycle" sodium and some other minerals. As much as people find it disgusting it could be a key to your survival if you have nothing to eat for a prolonged amount of time and fresh water would be scarce.
