I love that you give us permission to enjoy our garden areas however they present themselves, embracing the weeds and untidiness and just enjoying every aspect of nature. I used to be much like this but somehow my mother's criticisms of my weedy borders despite living on a farm thwarted my enthusiasm and efforts. Now I can really see how much my real, disorganised self is geared towards this style of gardening. Lovely to see you kneeling over your interestingly created border, something I've been unable to do for over 30 decades since I had a bone tumour in my knee but am happy with my high raised beds and lower sleeper ones, I couldn't cope otherwise. I love the system you describe of putting the logs into the bottom of the beds, I did watch your video where you constructed one. We bought in some very light soil for our raised beds as we have clay, it has proved to be a bit too light despite adding two barrowloads of compost each year. I'm going with minimum digging now and need do more mulching.

I mainly don't weed in winter because so many beneficial insects find shelter in the plants that are left. I started to clean up the garden in March and don't remember how many ladybugs I found snuggled into leftover plants. I just ordered a sweet cicely plant, thank you for the useful hint about its use with rhubarb. :)

I use an app called "picturethis" And it can identify plants from pictures (even very small seedlings), it's pretty accurate to be honest. You get so many free identifications, once I run out I usually uninstall and reinstall the app. Also, those that you said are calendula, I had already noticed them and wondered why you hadn't mentioned the calendula seedlings! You gave a great idea to save some give away to neighbors, friends and family. Great video Liz Zorab and most of the areas with weeds are under weed control membrane. Hopefully I will have winter crops in the beds because the fruit areas have weed control membrane but I need to put wood chip around the fruit trees and blackberries to control weeds. I do the same thing: never pull anything out unless I know what it is and I don't want it. The California poppy seedlings are sprouted well here. They make a fabulous show usually by the end of May.. Then eventually I have to start subtracting because they become ungainly. Once grown forever self seed. Supposedly a tincture made from the roots is good for pain. I made the tincture with vodka and I think the vodka was what worked. ;) My plot neighbour gave me Slender Speedwell and it is already flowering with the cute little blue flowers. I'll plant Nemesia around it because I think they will look gorgeous together. The Nemesia I started from dust sized seeds and they have white and pink scented flowers. Pretty little plants. She said the Speedwell is a good ground cover and is not difficult to control. But then again she said the same thing about the Blue Vervain which spread like the plague and needed to be sawed out of the ground like huge plant plugs. I like the plant but it was taking over the universe. So that's gone now. Blue Vervain would be a fabulous plant for erosion control. The roots are like a wig and needed to be cut out.
