About Us.
Byther Farm is a small organic homestead, designed and managed using permaculture practices. We aim for self-sufficiency in fruit and vegetables for increased self reliance and better resilience to the modern world. I recognise that we are unlikely to be truly self sufficient, but do the best we can. I share our home with my loving husband, Mr J and our cat, Monty.
We are a fifty-something couple who live on a smallholding in Monmouthshire, Wales. We are going green and creating a gentler, cleaner and more healthy life for our family.
There is a large organic kitchen garden with no dig gardening raised beds and young food forest in which to grown our fruit and vegetables.
We keep chickens and Aylesbury ducks.

Sounds exciting!!!! I have to say that yours is the THIRD place I've heard of that is moving!!!! Roots and Refuge, Whispering Willows, and you!!!!! 2021 is the year of NEW BEGINNINGS! I can hardly wait to see what is going to come up from the moves! I know it will be exciting and VERY INFORMATIVE!!!!!!! Good luck with everything!!!!!!

Really exciting about your move. Smaller houses are a blessing. They force us to assess what belongings give us meaning and joy. With your new duck pond, consider building up not down. This way you can have a drainage pipe the size of a sewer pipe with a tap or swivel pipe to water your food forest. You might need to bring in a tip truck of dirt for the dam walls. I have dirty turtles and draining our ponds are essential...ducks are similar.

What a fantastic adventure!! We moved 2yrs ago .... what an utter ball ache! Oh man - the weeds, the hidden buried treasure of glass, bricks, roots, tin toys and the odd trainer! Wouldn't have had it any other way ... it's home 😁

As you know I moved to Carmarthenshire in Feb. It has been busy. But I have discovered so many treasures eg an agricultural auction where I bought a dozen fertile duck eggs for £1. They are in the incubator! Great fun.

My husband and I are in the middle of looking for our forever farm. It really is all about compromise and being realistic about budgeting, isn’t it? I’m like you, Liz, I have an expanding list of “first things” that I want to do (greenhouse, polytunnel, deer-proof fenced in kitchen garden...)

My brother-in-law has a mini digger and he would be happy to dig you out a pond. He did for us. We added a wildlife pond to our wildflower meadow & growing space, and whatsmore, he did it in about an hour! How very exciting!!

You and I will be building our new places simultaneously. Our climates differ, and we don't eat animals or their products. I absolutely loved your book. I am not a fast reader but I found it easy to read and so insightful. I have a small holding as well and need both knees replaced. I could relate so easily to your health concerns. Gardening keeps me moving, slim and improves my mental health in the process. Oh Liz I feel your pain! I moved from Hampshire to my native Derbyshire Dales/Staffordshire in March and it was sooooooo stressful.
