Bought and returned this backpack, and I have some thoughts. It is good looking and comfortable, but it falls way short of adequate in terms of interior organization, and has many form-over-function design choices. There isn't a single zippered pouch inside the backpack, so if it's not upright, your stuff is falling out. And to make matters worse, its second largest compartment is never fully sealed. Velcro wears fast, and many reviews have reported the Velcro flap "warping" over time so as to not lay flat. Also, what's with those non-stretch bottle holders? If it was 80 bucks, I'd be more forgiving, but for this price you can get way more out of something like an Osprey Nebula - an actual gray man pack - and pocket the change. I really wanted to like it, but you can tell it's more about looking like tactical EDC than being it. My girl liked the look of it, and it's got a pretty good harness system, but it fails to meet basic functional requirements of a longterm usable backpack, imo.

Agree 100%. Contrast liners are such a nice quality of life thing for a pack. Not sure where it started but I've seen contrast material on the inside of Maxpedition, Vanquest and I think Hazard 4 packs. Also appears on some 5.11 packs if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the review. I bought this pack after watching it ahead of a trip to Panama. I own the Mystery Ranch 2 day pack but I wanted something smaller and lighter that I could take on the plane and then use as a day pack. It is wonderfully light weight and the water resistance worked well in light rain and boat spray. I am wearing it in close to 90 F weather and it does not get overly hot on your back. Side bottle pockets worked well and the bag holds quite a bit without having excess bulk, I found it held more than it looks like it would. The shoulder straps are very comfortable. There does seem to be space on the interior which could have had another pocket or two. The one improvement I would make (if anyone were asking) is at least one zippered interior pocket, there are none. I would have liked that for small items. There is of course a zippered pocket (unlined) at the top of the bag for your keys, etc. The zippers are nice and I like the high vis orange interior. Overall a great bag that I would recommend. Keep up the great content, the reviews continue to be accurate and very helpful.

I was attending MSU Bozeman back when Mystery Ranch was Dana Designs, and got a really good deal on a blemished backpacking pack straight from the factory floor. Later, after I got out of the Marines, I spent several years setting up a "get home bag," sort of replicating my patrol pack as an 0311. I finally settled on a Mystery Ranch 2-Day Assault pack. It isn't as Gray Man as yours, but it has the same superlative quality through and through. I carry it everywhere with me. It gets tossed in the back of various vehicles, goes on day hikes with the dogs, it goes hunting; everything I need to make it through an unexpected night out, whether that is the Jewel Basin or Cabinets in October, or just at a friends house. An EpiPen for my wife, an IFAK, batteries and charging cables, the Five Cs. My wife calls it my purse. When my friends ask, "does someone have tweezers," or whatever, they are looking at me. And yes, I usually got that. Let me open up my Mystery Ranch and get it for you. I love my Mystery Ranch. Their stuff it just solid. Comfortable. Durable. Functional. Carried mine for years now, not so much as a stitch missing, and it has seen some shit, been there, and done that.

One but major downside: the bottles can't be secured. Normally there should be some sort of compression strap, but this is not the case. Bottles may have loops, but they are useless. And the pocket isn't deep enough to provide security on its own. I've lost a vacuum mug once and I didn't like it.

I never consider that a water bladder pocket;..not a “hiker” pack. Wouldn’t want it to either. Plenty packs out there set up for bladder geeks needs. Too many imo. Would be cool to see an elastic “ retaining/ keeper” band sewn inside the top loader. The band sized to keep a billfold/ passport etc..somewhat more secured, while your digging around in there, or if forget to zip, or to “pick-it” proof from some would be professional pickpocket gang. Idk. Just thought that when I saw you fumbling around in there. Well done, thorough review. Great durability lab testing!

Picture your pack here and instead of putting your 1st aid kit and your EDC into the pack instead you could zip your EDC pouch on the back where that pocket id and you could zip on the 1st kit to the side of the pack and had a 2nd pouch same size as your 1st aid kit to put on the other side, that additional space created i would fill with cloths for when i go on holidays or food, cooking and sleeping gear for camping.. I would customise this pack get the stitching cut open and re sewing zippers into the seams to add what i would find useful but the pack is a bit to expensive to start cutting up and changing to customise for what i would need.. If they made these packs here in Australia i would go visit them and have a chat to see if i could get a custom made pack to suit my needs, we are pretty limited to what we can do here and have to get someone with heavy duty sewing gear to cut packs up and re add the zippers to customise packs which is not cheap to do either.. A lot of people who do these youtube pages or in these circles on social media always do their custom survival knives or survival tools etc, it would be good to see someone get a back pack company to do custom back packs, travel bags and pouches that don't look military issued instead of custom knives and survival tools etc.. You come across as a practical resourceful guy who could have a custom built back pack based on a 25L or 30L pack that could have the option to zip on and off the add on pouches you use, you can have that option of zipping them onto the pack for traveling and camping to free up the internal space in the 25L or 30L main pack, or you could put them into the pack for what you would call on youtube greyman bugout bags etc.. There would be backpack companies in USA looking for input from people like yourself who have a social media following that would do custom backpacks and add on pouches etc to a pack based on input from your follower base needs or changes to back packs, etc having a base pack that you could zip on or zip off add on pouches and a day pack with a camelbak that does not look like it is military issued or has that tactical back pack look about it..

For me in 2023, every pack must have a body armor sleeve as well as a conceal carry pocket without screaming wannabe SpecOps. I want a pack that I can load out for a weekend flight so that means evnough volume for a notebook, all the required cables, two full changes of clothes, toiletries, with room to spare for all the other junk but also be functional as a daily pack and rough enough to handle an overnight hike. To many of the packs that do the above are way to tactical looking and way to few have that sleeve for a soft aromor pad.
@user-xm3fo5vu1s9 ай бұрын
Looks good although i will stick with the type of packs i like, i have a old Rip Curl travel pack i've had for about 20 years.. It has a wet bag section made for wetsuits that i use for a water bladder or if i want a waterproof section from the rest of the pack, the whole pack is waterproof and also has the waterproof section made to carry wet wetsuits.. Best part of the pack is it's a 3 compartment 25L pack with 1 compartment being waterproof, it also has a 10L 2 compartment day pack that i can take off and use as a camelbak and day pack.. When the day pack is zipped on the 25L pack it gives me a 35L pack or as separate 2 packs i have a 25L pack and a 10L daypack/camelbak.. In your travels on the big ole wide world web have you come across any 25L packs that have a 10L pack that zips on and off the 25L pack..?? I've been looking for months trying to find something similar that does not look like a military pack and looks like like just a normal travel pack or hiking pack.. The 10L daypack is my carry bag with a 2L water bladder or what you call a EDC, then i have the 25L pack for when i am away for a few days to pack the extra gear i need, basically when i zip the 10L pack to the 25L pack i then move the water bladder from the 10L pack and put it in the wet section compartment on my 25L which is directly behind my back.. This pack here you are showing is perfect for what i am looking for as a 25L pack, it's just missing having that option of being able to zip on or off a 10L day pack that a can also use as a camelbak, when i travel i take it as a 35L pack (or when i fly 25L check in bag and 10L carry on bag for the plane), i would usually leave the 25L pack at the campsite or hotel/resort etc when on holidays or camping, then i use the 10L pack as my every day carry bag when i am holidays or camping..

That's an awesome pack just wish it had a zip on zip off 10L 2 compartment with front pocket day pack with camelbak, same with the side pockets it had it would be good if i could zip on and off a little pouch either side so i could use 1 pouch as a removable 1st aid kit or IFAK, the other side pouch i could put snacks in or use for loose items or shower toiletry bag i could store the crap i use when showering on holidays.. I can't even find anything close to what i am looking for that does not look military issued, at this point i might have to make my own pack or convince a company to customise a pack with adding the zips on the day pack camelbak and pouches i want to add..

Second, originally it was for 15% off, but because of some back end logistical issues and several people creating multiple accounts to use the code more than once, HB had to reissue the code and drop the percentage. I am sorry for the confusion on that end. Hope that clarifies things.

I bought my first Mystery Ranch because of an earlier review of yours, great bags. What would you prefer for a day hike, this or the 511 Amp 12 you recently discussed? Keep up the great work.

The 511 amp 12 is a good all around arounder, but the MR will be more ergonomic
