I read on the internet once that Kopa and Kiara were designed by two different artist departments within Disney, but they didn't communicate with each other about these two cubs, so neither group knew the other cub existed. For whatever reason, Disney finally decided to keep Kiara and discard Kopa.

Yes, this is true. The second film did not know that a book series existed while they were creating the film and had already planned out everything. They didn’t know about the books until after the film released and it was brought to their attention. As well, Kopa is not technically owned by Disney, but the author of the stories. An example of this would be similar to the rights of Kingdom Hearts. Disney has some rights to the game, but Square has more say over the original characters compared to the Disney aspects of it. A lot of people confuse the fanfiction that has been created over the years about Kopa’s fate as fact too, when really it’s as simple as a lack of the character’s known existence.

Zira’s attack on Kopa’s life will need to have been sometime after Zira and her family and her followers were banished from the Pride Lands as was shown in The Lion Guard: Lions of the Outlands. Since Kopa is the firstborn and because of Zira’s attack on Kopa’s life leading to Kopa going into hiding, it can explain why Kiara is being groomed as the next Queen of the Pride Lands and Kion has been known as the second born and only son of Simba and Nala. Next, can you please do a What if called What if Kion meets Kopa at the Tree of Life (in the events of The Lion Guard: The Tree of Life)?

Here is your answer different artist not same artist who helped make first movie. They redrew the opening scene from the end scene still same cub just drawn differently because The Lion King 2 was not even a concept as the first movie wrapped production before heading to the theaters. Kopa was a side project written by various authors with Disney's permission.

Kopa was primarily introduced in the book Lion King: Six New Adventures. Simba’s cub was never named in the original movie. The moviemakers refered to the cub as “ fluffy”. The name Kopa was given to the cub for the books. While Lion King 2 was being made, the moviemakers didn’t know about the books because they weren’t held in high regard at Disney. It’s common for moviemakers not to have a clue on what the comics or books contain. They established the cub at the end of the original movie to be a girl named Kiara. And there was no mention of siblings for Kiara. So it was pretty clear that Kopa did not exist in the movie continuity. With Lion Guard, many years later, the series made a retcon that Kiara DID have a sibling. A younger brother named Kion. But not Kopa. And based on the differences between Kion and Kopa, it’s not likely that they were meant to be the same character. Once again, Kopa does not exist in the animated series continuity. Now there are so many fan theories about Kopa as you can see in the comments section about what happened to him. Which is all speculation and fanon. Officially, Kopa never actually existed . He’s not an official Disney character. Really the book series is basically fanfiction that Disney gave permission to be published .

I decided to include Kopa in the TLK fanfic series I’m writing that are inspired by these what if and why videos. Watching these videos is helping me to build my own TLK 2 storyline. Since this Kopa story ends with Kiara being born, in my storyline, it will lead up to Kovu successfully killing Simba just as Zira planned. At the end of that story, Zira just leaves instead of falling to her death like in the movie and with Simba dead, Kovu and Kiara become King and Queen of the Pride Lands, opening the door for them to have their own cub like at the end of the first film.

He is NOT canon he was not made by Disney, those books he was in were not made, written or had anything to do with Disney at all therefore there is no such thing as Kopa The cub at the end was a place holder the writers of the film knew Simba and Nala would have a cub they just at that time hadn’t written who it would be so that cub is still technically Kiara but that wasn’t known at the end of the first movie
