Jedi KNIGHTS. Not Jedi Space Wizards. Jedi KNIGHTS. Basic visual storytelling. Lucas has his weaknesses, but visual language is not one of them. He gets visual language better than many filmmakers. Lucas made a film series, a visual medium. The lightsaber is a part of the language of the film specific to the Sith and Jedi. That's why ONLY they get lightsabers, and why they are seldom -- if ever -- without them.

There was a comic in which Obi Wan explains to Anakin what the lightsaber truly represents. Obi Wan says that the Jedi could create Kyber Crystal based weapons and that these weapons would be lethal, but that the Jedi prefer to use the lightsaber simply because of the fact that it is far more harder to master it. A Jedi with a Lightsaber means that Jedi has trained for years in order to use such a weapon: it means discipline, dedication, mastery, elegance, patience, moderation, etc. All the values that make the Jedi are focused on mastering the lightsaber, and thus, it is literally the center of a Jedis life.

@@jarkkovahamaa7272 the Sith used them (surprisingly) for the same reason. To master a lightsaber is difficult, therefore, mastering the blade for a Sith Lord can be the highest expression of power. The Sith not only sought power over others, but over themselves as well. Also, facing a Jedi using blasters is not a good idea, so their best option is to fight fire with fire… or that was their strategy until Darth Sidious. Sidious despised lightsabers because he was so powerful, using one was beneath him. He used them to humiliate Jedi and after defeating them, he almost never used one again. The Death Star became for him the right way to use Kyber Crystals.

A lot is cleared up once you understand Lucas was borrowing from Samurai culture and ethos whose analogue of the lightsaber is the katana, a part of the "life and path of the samurai warrior" (in fact, there's a classic samurai book called the Life-Giving Sword by Yagyu Munenori), just like the lightsaber is for Jedi knights.

I find it funny that people say "This weapon is your life" is some kind of gotcha to the Jedi and how they aren't consistent with attachment. I mean at that point Jedi shouldn't be wearing clothes by that logic since they own their clothes. The lightsaber is considered an extension of themselves. The lightsaber is more than just a weapon, it's a part of the Jedi, it's similar to how in samurai films show the importance of a sword to the samurai warrior and how these warriors treat their swords with respect. It's not just an object like an iPhone.

Then some people got mad Yoda and Palpatine who in their mind I think had evolved past the need for them since they were seen more as wizards rather than knights and attacked that line in particular.

I like the representative lightsaber=Jedi, and "no one can kill a Jedi." And then we meet Grievious. It's one of the reason's he was so shocking, initially. (20+ years have numbed us to that I think.) As for the body transfer piece, I do like that. It's a supremely rare ability, with some fairly high requirements. Dark Empire had a well reasoned argument. And I loved how the Bane Trilogy left it as a possible question. The less said of Ep 9, the better. My biggest quibble of it is: this is a man, the most powerful Sith Lord in a 1,000+ years, the strategic mastermind who orchestrated the Clone Wars.... and having the foresight to continue into clones of himself; ... and the first thing he does is announce that he's back before his ships are ready nor have even achieved orbit? Let alone a multi-pronged surprise attack designed to spike fear and hatred across the galaxy, strengthening the Darkside even further? ....I'm gonna stop that rant here. Trying to stay with "less siad better." /chuckle cheers all. I'm enjoying your eclectic mix of videos

Hey Thor, I'd like to slightly push back on what you said about Lightsabers I think that the more down to earth practical reasons you mentioned are a far smaller part from the point of view of the jedi as to why Obi Wan is scolding Anakin in that scene. While I would assume that during the filming of AOTC George probably hadn't worked out the specific details of the force bond of a crystal to it's jedi, I would say that even if we go just a little bit further into the movie there is a line that seems to make it clear that Anakin would have been scolded just as bad if not worse, if instead of simply dropping it, Anakin's lightsaber were destroyed and unable to be used by another for nefarious purposes that could tarnish the jedi image That line being inside the droid factory on Geonosis when his lightsaber was cut in two. It is clearly inoperable and would not be able to be used by anyone to tarnish the image of the jedi. Infact Anakin even remained in possession of the greater portion of his hilt. Never the less he is disappointed in himself and worried about how Obi Wan will react when he learns about it. Rather notably, he does not seem particularly frighted for his life despite being shot at by hostile geonosians moments earlier Personally I believe that adding the context of that scene on Geonosis from the same movie is enough to conclude that, while a valid concern, the image of the jedi is not the sole or even the primary reason for which Anakin was earlier scolded for losing it and reminded that the weapon is his life. When we consider the added context from The Clone Wars I would say the bond to the kyber crystal being revered is the primary reason for Obi Wan's insistence that Anakin must not lose his lightsaber.
@thorskywalker
@thorskywalker 7 ай бұрын
I'd argue what happens on Geonosis backs up what I'm saying in the video. Because Anakin doesn't actually care that the lightsaber itself was destroyed and that the crystal within was potentially ruined. He basically cracks a joke about how Obi-Wan is going to kill him, instead of there being any sort of emotional response to the loss of the saber.
@SpeedingWheelbarrow
@SpeedingWheelbarrow 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to respond I appreciate your thoughts. I think what you've said here explains why Obi Wan is constantly trying to hammer more importance and respect into Anakin's head. Anankin has developed a callousness towards his lightsaber, likely due to Obi Wan's lacking as teacher for Anakin. I still think the fact that it was destroyed rather than lost/confiscated the second time is still evidence of my position.

The idea comes very much from the samurai culture. Depending on which time period, the lon sword (Katana or Tachi) was seen as the samurais symbol of status. Wearing the long sword when he walked out of his home was more or less mandatory. He would leave it at the door when entering anothers home, but keep his short sword for self-defence. But that was courtesy towards the host. It was therefore very shameful for a samurai that feel on hard times and might have to pawn or sell his sword to get cold hard cash.

There's a conversation between Tuvok and an alien intruder in the episode Alter Ego of the third season of Star Trek Voyager, where it's mentioned. Hey Thor, I have a thought on your oft-repeated question of where so many fans get their ideas about Jedi. It's George Lucas' choice of words. Why do people think the Jedi are supposed to be emotionless? What are the first words of the Jedi Code? "There is no emotion, there is peace." Why would people reading this think the ideal Jedi was anything BUT emotionless? He could have used a word like 'turmoil' or 'rage' or 'passion' or anything else that evokes extreme distress, but he chose a basic word like 'emotion', setting up 'peace' as its opposite. Why do people think the Chosen One's destiny was to destroy the Jedi (and along with that the idea that Gray Jedi are the ideal Jedi)? He was prophesied to bring 'balance' to the Force, not 'serenity' or 'health' or anything generally positive. He wrote 'balance', implying two or more vying tides that need to be evened out (and after clearly establishing the Dark and Light Sides in the OT). I don't think he was trying to say anything too convoluted or weird, but that he just didn't think through the misinterpretations his word choices might lead viewers to make. In an odd sense, it kind of validates Yoda's philosophy of being patient and cautious, even in as seemingly placid an activity as writing. What do you think?

Power creep is easy to solve, just say epic powers got lost and a holocron got rediscovered. With how easy this is, you wonder why holocrons aren't more ubiquitous in Disney SW. It's a skill at the end of the day, not just someone getting powers out of nowhere.

Hey Thor, Do you think that Disney has any plans to bring Luke Skywalker back, maybe in Dave Filoni’s new movie ? And if so, would his character be closer to how he is in the Sequel trilogy or do you think they would stay true to his character and how he is in the OriginL trilogy ?

Personally, I don't think it was meant to be taken literally..Obi-Wan was trying to get across to him that a lightsaber is more personal than a blaster,something that Mandalorians and Jedi have in common. A weapon isn't just a weapon, it's forged from parts of you,and carries a legacy.Ironically enough,Anakin's last Jedi lightsaber lasted for more than 30 years,and he was in fact,the death of Obi-Wan..From certain point of view.

Engaging in war is one of the jedi many mistakes,there’s no sugarcoating that. Recruiting child soldiers is just another one and probably their biggest mistake. It makes sense for them to have made these mistakes in the prequels bc this is the same group that got blindsided by the sith and only one sith at that.

I think the fact that the Banite Sith "outgrew" lightsabers and only kept them around to mock Jedi says more about what a lightsaber is than what it isn't. It's a traditional weapon that has become symbolic of the Jedi, while the Sith are not as traditionalist as the Jedi. Without the Sith innovating past tradition, Jedi would likely still be using tethered lightsabers. As for essence transfer, that's clearly well established canon that's fully compatible with other lore. Force ghosts/spirits implies there's something beyond just flesh and blood in Star Wars and thus taking over another body should be possible. Similarly draining life for the sake of immortality like how Vitiate achieves his long life is also compatible with other aspects of the lore. Regarding child soldiers in Star Wars, Jedi really seem to like doing that to their kids. Zannah shouldn't have been on Ruusan... she was like 9 during that. At least Padawans are usually 13+

Regardless of lore reasons .. the lightsaber is critical from a story point of view to the Jedi , without the lightsaber the Jedi becomes generic wizard warrior monk

Hey Thor, you've repeatedly asserted in your videos that the Jedi have friendships and hobbies outside of being Jedi. Aside from Obi-Wan's relationship with Dex and Luke's New Jedi Order, could you please give some examples? My experience of the lore is that the whole point of Luke's Order beyond reviving the Jedi was to make major reforms to how Jedi approached relationships of all kinds and emotions, and that prior to this in the Clone Wars and Old Republic eras the cause of anti-Jedi sentiment in the public was the result of the Jedi withdrawing from public life and isolating themselves to their literal ivory towers in between missions. Both KOTOR games touch on this at length, but it seems to be a big part of what Palpatine and Dooku were taking advantage of during the Prequels.

In my honest opinion, the crystal choosing the Jedi is a stupid idea. I don’t like that the other crystals are almost sentient, especially since we see Jedi using other lightsabers all the time. There’s no special connection between a Jedi and his weapon more than he made it his own, the way he likes it. Dooku with his curved hilt, Vader made his lightsaber a dark twin of his old lightsaber, but he didn’t have the same crystal. “This weapon is your life.” can take on a whole other meaning if you consider the lightsaber a reflection of the particular Jedi, as in reflecting you as a person, and nobody else should really have it. Not only that, but the lightsaber is the only weapon Jedi carry in a harsh world, where a man’s life is cheaper than water. In a pinch, the lightsaber is a Jedi’s lifeline, a source of light in the dark, a shield against a would be assassin, and a sword to defeat those who will not see reason.

Hey Thor, So, honestly this season of the Bad Batch has kind of been ruined for me. I would like to hear your thoughts on my opinion. So, I do not think Omega has developed as a character enough. When she sacrificed herself, thinking that the Empire would just pull out, that shouldn't have happened. Right when she said she surrendered, the Empire would've started either 1 kiling everyone and burning the village or 2 capturing everyone and taking them into custody or 3 occupying the island with a 100% crackdown on the citizens. I think she needed to see that happen, because at the end of the day, the Empire is evil. They are not compassionate and wouldn't let this island just rebuild and have everyone survive seeing them take Omega away. Also, Crosshair, Wrecker, AND Hunter all would've been captured or killed, because they are war criminals. Just because they prioritized capturing Omega, doesn't mean they'd let the rest of the Bad Batch survive free. So when this episode starts, the bad batch is plotting how to save Omega and get to Mount Tantis. But I argue, they should've been taken into custody (killing them off would ruin the rest of the season). It makes no sense they were all free despite being war criminals and they could just leave with Phee. The Empire would prevent all citizens from leaving the island, so they wouldn't have been able to leave anyway. I think they should've had Echo and the "gang" (lol) save the Bad Batch from custody and then continue the story line from there. I feel like 1 not letting omega develop more as a character by seeing not everyone has good in them and 2 the empire letting the village survive along with the bad batch makes this ending so unrealistic. In addition, I feel compared to Ezra and ahsoka in their respective third seasons, Omega has developed the least as a character.

I miss back when the lightsaber was just a cool laser sword. Even in the prequels, some random jedi tosses a new lightsaber for Anakin. Now in pretentious works like TCW or Mando, they've become mini-excaliburs with ridiculous new rules that don't make any sense.

It is a line that further explains how Obi-Wan and the Jedi of the prequels were detached from the actual reality of being a Jedi. A Jedi is so much more than their lightsaber, it is their knowledge & diplomatic skill to deescalate a situation without violence that makes them true peacekeepers. A lightsaber is nothing but a tool & a Jedi's absolute last resort. The fact that Obi-Wan says that its their most important asset shows that he was a failure (as described by George Lucas in the Star Wars Archives book for Episodes I-III).
