Sucks. Really sucks but hopefully we can get this fixed soon.
EDIT* Im not sure if Greg and I will fix the timing or not. The engine does have a full warranty on it so before we touch it im seeing what the shop wants to do.

Don’t compression test until your timing is correct. Try not to run the engine any more!

The shop that rebuilt the engine needs to fix this. Don't do anything else to it the damage is already done just have them fix it since it has a full warranty.

I reviewed this video a couple of times and when you did your TDC test with the 3/8 extension, you cams were in the correct position. The lobe pointed backwards and the line was on the topside. If you flip these you will bend your valves.

when my vr6 was out of time, it sounded completely different even tho it was only one tooth, not flipped 180° but still once it was in time, completely different sound and it was even way more powerful

I know this post is two years old, but when you put your engine to TDC your Cams were flipped to the top side indicating the timing was correct.

You’re running a mk4 gasket with mild cams, hopefully you didn’t bend a valve or kissed the top of the pistons

Crazy cause there are so many timing marks to keep them from screwing up timing when assembling. humble mechanic has a video and that’s what I used to time mine

I reviewed this video again and I believe that you were not accounting for the fact that the Crank must make 2 full rotations for 1 full rotation of Cams. So while you had your Pully Marks were alligned, your engine was on the down stroke. One more rotation would flip your cams to the correct side. When you do your TDC test with the 3/8 extention, you put your cams to the correct position. I verified by looking at the Cam lobe position. Now I have to watch all your videos to see what you and Greg did to fix this.

Live and learn... I had thought about doing a vr swap. When I said you cured me of ever wanted to do a vr swap. I have 4 kids and lots of life going on. I try to keep my down time on my Jetta at a minimum. That being said I have done quite a bit as far as mods. I'm glad you turn the wrenches on your own ride. Can't wait for the finished product.
