One thing that got me bored of the game was the small payouts. It takes me ages to earn like 2k money so grinding for a new car or to upgrade one takes so long it gets boring. And since solo and online are seperate careers it gets even more exausting to grind in both of them

It also has the best performance upgrade and tuning system of any game, like ever, including sim racers, full stop. Nearly beamng levels of part combinations, behaviors, and settings, in an easy to understand, simplistic package... oh yeah... AND THE TURBO TIMING. Ug2 and Prostreet style tuning NEEDS to be brought back into nfs, I have absolutely no idea why they having tried to replicate it yet. Sure most wanted and carbon nixed it due to time and data constraints, as well as theme, but it's a tuning setup that would sit VERY well in modern nfs games and with modern nfs players, plus we have the space and the manpower neccessary to make that happen now. Heat and unbound would have been WORLDS better with it. Make NFS Eagle engined again.

One thing I really miss on arcade racing games are the rewards after every race, where you unlock new parts, new cars, new content or even new areas. This feature allowed us to enjoy the game little by little without rushing it and appreciate the game without getting bored or forgetting it a few weeks later, it made the game more challenging, more rewarding and way more fun. Nowadays everything is already unlocked by start, you just need to gather some cash to buy it, with just a few collectibles just to say there's nothing like this

The whole problem is that we expect these games to last forever. Old NFS had no live service, and it was fun, from start to finish in the singleplayer... Funny enough that's what made me like Unbound so much... the singleplayer career finally feels challenging and rewarding..... EVEN THOUGH PEOPLE WILL JUST COME AND CRY THAT THEY CAN'T BUY THE ENTIRE CARLIST IN THE FIRST WEEK.... But i've completed the career, enjoyed it a lot and just put the game off... like i always did with any NFS... Games don't need to have endless flood of FOMO content for it to be "good", it just needs to give me a fun experience that doesn't get boring before it ends!

I agree with this honestly. I am single player kind of gamer myself in racing games. And NFS Unbound does not have much to offer at this moment. Sure, collectables and customising cars is fun, but it does not have the spark it had in the beginning. I wouldn't mind the grind if I had time, but that's something I don't have as often as I did when I was kid. It is hard to be a Need For Speed fan... Really hoping Criterion games get a hold of themselves and give us something good, both on single and multi player.

It's a sad development that racing games can only manage with multiplayer integration. Video games are becoming more and more competitive and the people who only want to play occasionally are being pushed out. That is the sad consequence when a leisure activity mutates into a sport. People no longer play to have fun, but primarily to win.

The biggest reason I think racing games die off fasters is because there are more games to play in general. Personally, I like the old games music overall. From Midnight Club 3 to NFS 1,2, and Most Wanted. The music back then really suited, racing excitement and coolness. The last thing is that missing is a much easier and more detailed car customization.

I have been a massive fan of NFS franchise since basically I was born. I played and replayed every title since 2001 to 2013 and that was the time I stopped paying attention to the franchise. I just learned that there is another installment of NFS but its been 4 month already! The devs need to realize how out of touch their approach is when the core audience of their franchise have no idea they made another game. And this another game looks to me exactly like the previous and the one before that. I still have Underground 2 installed on my PC and I play it from time to time, I am not saying that "the grass was greener back then", but this game just doesn't get old. I really wish they made a game with all of the modern features, graphics and catching story where I could immerse myself for hours, days and weeks and not get bored with cringy dialogues and story lines which don't make sense. Honeslty, I just watched at the official gameplay video and this game looks boring to me. I hate to say that, since I feel like a boomer, but it just doesn't strike a chord it my, which is sad.

the campaign mode in gt7, such as it is, is the absolute basic that I need in my game to keep me engaged. if I can ever get good enough to actually do the missions and get that damn super license, I'll explore multiplayer, but until then it's just good enough to keep me very much engaged, i wish it was way more fleshed out, but at least I've got the driving physics I like the best and still plenty of cars to buy and try out. also really not sure where their force feedback department went out to lunch to, but damn they sure needed to spend a lot more time in studio on that. just spent 30 seconds in ACC and i remembered why I loved it so much! the detail i get from the roads is stupendous! at least until the lack of campaign mode seriously lifted its dreary head at me and my trash skills that don't belong anywhere but offline.

I think Open World is the issue. Older games had a big world but still curated the progression and challenges so it felt like you were getting better. Now with open world where you can do anything, go anywhere it’s paralysis by choice. You mentioned older Burnout games. I think it peaked at Takedown. Paradise makes you drive around too much for the return on investment. People say they want Open World but really they want variety.

Hmm, you have a logical approach, but I don't fully follow them (but mostly do) all. As you pointed out, is a functional Multi-Player with Competition stuff (leagues, etc.) mandatory this time. Also, the "evolving" Game with constantly adding content is true nowadays. BUT imho NFS Unbound was/is a Test imho. EA gave back development to Criterion to see, if they can still make a NFS which actually sells or makes waves in these times. I think if Unbound flopped again, it would be one of the last titles. But Criterion managed to put the game in the right direction, and it made waves. They kicked out Rubber banding, which is a Novum in NFS (and from a manager point of view, fur sure difficult). Now they got a lot of good reviews and imho we can wait for a good next title, which delivers also what you said. In the meantime, they will bring some updates to unbound, but I think also to test out, on how a Live-Service can function in the world of NFS. Should it be Racing themed? Or more like GTA with police chases? Anyway, I'm very happy to have one more game in my library and these weeks I love to spend time in Singleplayer. So, for me Unbound delivered. I love the customization of the cars (man look the Doge Hellcat - Woa) and I love the city....just driving the city feels so neat. And I can't wait for what the future brings. And NO, not every game must be a NEW Forza-Killer, but it should equal the development money and bring some fresh players. NFS was the last year's dead for me. A rubber banding game (even arcade) is a No-Go for me. So....lets hold our thumbs ;-)

I was playing NFSU during the EA Play free 10 hour trial and was wondering why I was feeling so bored going from race to race So I went back to playing NFS Hot Pursuit after 5 years of not touching it.... and damn Intense Rock Music X Dramatic orchestraic music. Strategic EMP Usage. Overdramtic TURBO NITROUS. Ability to watch your opponents dramatically crash without you doing anything. Cops racing alongside you. FREAKING BIPLANES flying across your line of sight. Working drift mechanics that cooperate well with the level design. Race under scenic waterfalls. Hard-to-master shortcuts that require you knowing the limits of your car. The option to play as a cop instead! A FREAKING police helicopter will fly above you mid race and shake your whole screen. My respect for NFSHP has jumped despite originally getting bored of that game too for lack of car customizatation and repetitive scenerey and cutscenes. But you dont know what you have until its gone. So many aspects of the game kept me at the edge of my seat, meanwhile NFSU allows me to relax a little bit... and I think that's where the problem lies NFSU. I should not feel at ease when driving a car at 150 MPH. You'd think the flashy cel-shade visuals would successfully disguise the underwhelming gameplay, but I guess the soundtrack should have been more cinematic as well. I'm not feeling the hype I once felt.

I thought nostalgia was the reason I looked back on older racing titles so fondly, but after going back to some older titles recently, it's made me realise that it's more than just nostalgia, they're just more fun to play. I race online with a wheel regularly on GT7, and I really enjoy what it has to offer, but then I also went back to DiRT 3, GT1-4, the original grid and juiced just to name a few. Those games were built around single player, they couldn't rely on post launch content (except D3, but the game felt complete). They're all extremely fun to play through, really engaging, all massive games where for the most part you can play exactly how you want. Juiced in my opinion is still one of the most challenging arcade racers and I absolutely love it. I finished Unbound recently, one I finished the main story I felt like I had absolutely no reason to keep playing. The idea that I just had to restart everything to play multiplayer put me off completely. Maybe it is nostalgia, I don't know what it is, I think I just prefer my arcade racing games to be a bit more retro in design. As much as I love sim racing with my wheel, I can't do it all the time, I get bored of playing 1 thing quite quickly. Not quite sure what I wanted to achieve with this comment but here we are.

The main reason these titles fail or be forgotten or at least mediocre is that they make the games to please the investors not the players. a shorter game, good enough graphics and quality content, and replayability are what gets you back to the game, we really don't want big stale maps, ultra-realistic graphics, and artificially forced long hours game, these are the icing on top instead of being the main pie.

Unbound for me is a game that I have found myself wanting to revisit, time and again. It isn't one that's become forgotten like what you're suggesting, however I do fear Criterion and EA aren't really doing their best and may make the game go the way of Heat, which will upset me if that happens. What I wish they would do is if they intended the game's end game to be multiplayer focused (which is the effect I get after completing the main story), they should take a few pages from Ghost Games and how they did Rivals, 2015 and Heat: The race events and the free roam multiplayer are all interconnected, making the multiplayer free roam feel lived in, while at that same time, further make the game less of an AFK-style game where you can just sit at the start and mooch off the lead drivers. That irked the hell out of me when I saw that, I just stopped playing it because it made the multiplayer completely pointless. Otherwise, I could also suggest the single player mode could do for a more revolving, random generated event list to help people remain interested in the post-game content, just to give people something to do to help drive that 'car collection' itch just a bit further. There's a decent roster of cars (even if some of them are pretty much just repeats), but it's something that could use some attention to help captivate the player base.

I recently went back and finished nfs mw 2005, after finishing the game I decided to give unbound a second try, I had originally played through to the second in game when it was first released. going back to unbound I found that again the cars felt slow and unresponsive (I was rather surprised when I discovered that there is a deadzone function for the left analog stick, it's turn on and set to 25% by default meaning cars turn about 0.5 of a second after you push the analog stick.) The police felt more like an annoyance blocking me from progressing (anyone else have situations where you manage to get rid of all the police except for one who then suddenly becomes impossible to get rid of?) as apposed to the relatively balanced challenge that they were in mw. I also had a moment where during the game's first sprint race where an ai was rubber-banned so hard they managed to jump from 5th to 1st within a couple of seconds, finishing in first. I had a situation where two ai's were stuck against a wall together only for the one closet to the wall to suddenly get launched into the air team rocket style. ... My problem with modern NFS is that everything the games bring to the table (other than graphics & the option for multiplayer) feels like it was done better in the older days. Take the heat and police system in unbound compared to mw for instance: in mw every car has it's own heat level which would rise and fall depending on how much you used it (encouraging you to use multiple car through out the game.) your heat level could also be dropped by customizing your car (effectively making unrecognizable to the police). unbound by comparison locks your heat level regardless of what car you use, on top of this anyone else feel like the police are only in the game because it's expected to be there?

Another reason why newer racing games are quickly forgotten is that they lack split screen multiplayer. To be 100% honest, I bought a PS2 and 2 controllers last year along with a few racing games just for the split screen capabilities. Its something so simple, yet developers don't do it anymore for some reason.

The problem I have with NFS is the whole driving and racing experience... I love arcade racers (like Underground 1&2), but the handling in NFS is just so wonky and boring now, that I don't even care to drive most of the cars. The end game should be about buying and driving every car you want, because you want to ENJOY DRIVING every car... I play games like Gran Turismo endlessly because I want to experience every car. The visual and performance mods are the only thing NFS has to offer anymore. The driving in NFS is boring now, period. Brake to drift is not fun, handbrake 90* turns are not fun, boost starts are not fun, dodging dive-bombing cops mid race is not fun, 6 lane wide roads are not fun, rubber-banding AI is not fun, driving 200MPH everywhere is not fun. NFS Underground, despite it's age, is much more FUN TO DRIVE than any modern NFS. The cars kinda felt like what you'd expect, and it was fun to just cruse around and have fun with the car. And at the end of the game, you had free access to every car and free reign with vehicle mods, races and events. The driving should be the focus of a racing game, and it's the main reason I still go back and play Underground 2, while I never go back to Heat or Payback, despite liking the maps, visual mods, sound design, style or anything else. They can change EVERYTHING else about NFS, I just won't care until driving cars feel remotely like driving cars again. (not to even start on how boring and unrewarding the racing can be)

NFS games went down and under after Most Wanted. Main reason - the games became too short and toooooo arkady. For me the franchise died after the Porshe game (the last 0one with mods). After you experience a driving game (ETS2/ATS) with a proper wheel, NFS is just a mobile title. They could do so much more but chose to be cash grabers. EA should put down the title forever at this point... or sell it to someone who can make it great again.

I feel like one reason that unbound is held back is the fact the starter cars dont really feel like thy had much variety like were is the 99 civic si we only get the ek9 civic but what about the other version what about the lexus ls400 or the is200 and why the hell is there no chevy cobalt and catfish camaro like seriously they got 3 different generations of mustangs but only 2 generations of camaro amd the trucks in the game are bland no gmc sierra or ford svt raptor no we get the Ecoboost raptor the classic and new land rover and the chevy colorado nice but not the same as a chevy s10 or ford svt lightning

NOPE, you are wrong, the only issue Unbound has is post story is lacking in content. The game doesnt open up after you beat the story, and the reason for that is the devs plan to release chapters of content. The story progression and gameplay is as close to perfection for NFS in 2023 as any dev has gotten with real cars without going full realism. It takes elements of every racing games in the past 20 years. Mario Kart, Underground,2, Most Wanted, Heat, Midnight Club, Juiced 1, Burnout Paradise, etc etc. Look at all the praising reviews it got initially. That praise is going to be remembered going forward. The dialogue/story has always been bad in all racing games, so no one really ever cares about that. The only reason reviews started to tank was because there is nothing to do post story IN Singleplayer. So again that throws your argument out the window since you say its mainly about online multiplayer, when its not. Tons of people only play single player and that was the target audience. Idgaf about online play for example in any game and I been gaming since 1990 😂. Also looking at sales is not the way to judge a game at all. Nothing is ever going to sell like Most Wanted, because A: there arent 15 consoles and handhelds anymore, having that many copies on that many platforms alone inflated the sales numbers. B: EA doesnt market NFS as aggressively anymore because this next generation just doesn't care that much about fast cars much less racing. There is no brand new Fast and Furious pop culture moment, no Pimp My Ride cultural moment either, etc etc. Gamers as a whole play online shooters as their main entertainment. EA knows this, even the dev team for NFS is smaller when compared to Battlefield. The true test with Unbound will be when the DLC is released, then we will see how its remembered going forward.

To be honest, I was just searching for a LP on Unbound to get a glimpse if it would be a thing for me. I thought I would have a main problem in these comic style effects everywhere and these stupid characters in game. But now, after I saw your video, it doesn't even seem to be the main reason not to buy this game. The fact that it is a singleplayer game focussing on it's campaign makes me think that it is the right type of game for me, bcause I don't like the way the arcadish titles are going. Forza Horizon 5 killed it for me. I don't want hipster kids everywhere, I don't need to jump out of a plane or have a two mile jump against some crossbikes. And why do I need to collect cars?I don't want 500 different cars in my Garage, but I need the cars I like, and how I'd like them to look like, maybe in 10 variations and I'd like to be the one responsible for getting the money together, to do this. I feel like this is getting lost at the moment, and it started with Forza Horizon 2. There is only one way this series is going, and it is like the Fast and Furious franchise. Just trying to be interesting by doing something more extreme and unrealistic. That is why I still love good old titles like NFS Underground1+2, Test Drive Unlimited or Forza Horizon (1). But this concept is dying and sadly the only way to keep virtually racing for me seems to be in a simulation racing game like GT or FM. Hopefully they don't screw up these titles, too.

Games will not get better just because time passes. Look at City Interactive's 2000's games, I don't think they will ever be considered good not even after a century either. Modern gaming has become mostly soulless, needy and grindy. Today people don't just sit down to enjoy and maybe relax while playing games but instead compete anytime they can and they get surprised after they turn off the PC or put down the controller that they are frustrated XD. Those old racing titles will be good even after the generation who first played them no longer walk among us.

Something that important is the gaming experience, unbound do NOT give player a flawless gameplay, like underground you said, it’s gameplay is both intense and fun, and the environment is limited by graphics but it just works, it’s beautiful enough and fun enough for a racing game like this. Unbound? The whole map looks like the damn same, and it gets bored quickly. The physics? Underground has straight and enjoyable physics, cars do go out of control some times but most the time every time you drive through the tracks, it’s still fun enough though it’s based on a simple engine. But unbound’s physics are just way to unpredictable, some cars are good, some cars are just barely controllable, some builds that just better than others only because they fit the physics better, and they have the same rating for the game, that ruins the fun of tuning and destroyed my patience. Let’s all accept nfs has passed the time.

The hit the nail on the head with nfs heat and then they basically dropped the game. They put out a couple of updates, (good updates too I’ll give them that) but then they just left it completely. The multiplayer was fun and really well done, the world was one of the prettiest they made, and they ditched it. Unbound doesn’t have a pretty or iconic world like Heat or 2015 or Most Wanted. I’m currently playing unbound and I like it, there’s just that edge missing that it doesn’t have. It’s like, pretty good game, but it just doesn’t feel satisfying. I think the heat system and money system could be done a lot better and they should go back to the nfs Heat version. Stick with what works and don’t play around with things that are already good. Love the different cop types, but even the cop and heat system don’t feel satisfying whatsoever.

Imo Forza and NFS should stop using the support model that they have been doing since previous installments and pay more attention to what Ubisoft has done with The Crew 2, where for example with each new season that comes out there are new types of events and a new layer of Variety in the game along with more content in vehicles (which in many cases are community requested vehicles) that you can get by playing the game (or through microtransactions), that has made the game last 5 years without losing a flow of players so that it continues to be profitable. I am interested if Ubisoft and Ivory Tower are going to continue with this support strategy with TC Motorfest, because it seems to me the ideal one so that an arcade racing game does not die so quickly and stays alive for a few years.

Unbound (and the last few NFS Games) generally lack a sense of direction. It's trying to do too many things at once and cobbling together elements of previous NFS games in a mess that doesn't work. I disagree that a game like unbound would be "game of the century" if it came out in 2003, it has far too many flaws to overlook which make even the single player experience unimpressive. The police chases are just boring and uninspired, the city feels generic and bland, the mix of simcade handling and brake to drift is clunky and unrewarding, the story is awfully cringe beyond belief, the music is utterly terrible and has zero energy to it, and the AI are notoriously rubber-bandy and have the cringiest voice lines. The customisation and vehicle selection are great, and the visual style is unique, but those aren't enough to make a great game. I go back to the older NFS games every now and then and they are much more fun to play and engaging, they actually make you want to keep playing. Unbound feels mostly uninspired with a few glimpses of brilliance here and there. This is without mentioning how the online experience is abysmal. NFS games from 10 years ago did the online better. There is no event matchmaker so you just sit there in a lobby with AFK players until one or two of them decide to race, and it's always an S+ class race. You can't just pick your car and press a "race" button to be matched with players. This absolutely kills online engagement and I don't understand why they're sticking to this model other than to rip off Forza Horizon

You can have the best graphically looking game with the best customization, but if the story and gameplay suck, it wont stand the test of time. Unbound doesnt "suck" but its music is in poor taste, its story isnt original, just a mix of previous nfs stories, and certain parts of the game are frustratingly difficult to a ridiculous degree. EA needs to start giving us new original ideas for the story Like what Carbon did with its almost mystery-solving-esc story and sudden betrayal by someone we thought was our friend, and gaining an unexpected ally, albeit temporarily. ProStreet was another breath of fresh air that Forza picked up on and copied to great success with Horizon, then Crew 2 copied that as well. Crew 1 was another ambitious and riveting story that I enjoyed and why I consider Crew 2 to be a disappointment. EA needs to keep need for speed an arcade street racer with unique and interesting stories that dont crash in on constant nostalgia (stop putting legacy cars in the game, give us the body kits, give us the customization if we wanted to make them, but stop making them parts of the story, it makes the universe seem really small, and the tactic is cheap at best). I would love to see a game with a story that just totally catches me off guard, decent acting, and great gameplay and online features. I think that is something we can all agree on.

the thing that was missing is end content and it was the same in nfs: heat. like in heat we got told about the League aka the blacklist but never got a chance to challenge them. like they're supposed to be the top the best of the best but you never get a shot at them yet you miraculously are apart of it? It was a middle finger to everyone who was excited for the challenge of doing heat tasks or even simply racing in vehicle locked races i.e. if your opponent is in a 4wd you have to bring a 4wd not a supped up hyper car with dirt tires. its little thing like that which make older racing games last a little longer but now its all about getting that one meta broken car and crapping on the competition online. I remember back on my nfsu2 save I had a mx-5 that broken as hell nearly everything on it was maxed and it was a rocket ship then making a new save but finding out that I couldn't repeat the same success because I had just made the right choices luckily with my tuning at the time but now you can just go on KZbin and find a video about how this car is meta and how to get it. Social media while also increasing the fandom of games also ruined a lot of the fun from video games and no one can deny that fact

Multiplayer is a double edge sword, you can still go back and play NFS Underground, GT, etc., decades later, play a current console multiplayer racing game twenty years from now, probably not going to happen. Most games these days spend heavenly on the development time on graphics & looks, in the past it was game play that was most important. PC racing games like AC can survive because theirs constantly updated by the community. AI, is far from fully developed, these days developer don't spend a lot of time on the AI, thinking multiplayer will save them, we see this with GT7 which pushed out the same chase the rabbit scenario.
