Df2 is basically the only evasive problem with him , other evasive moves are slow , comes from QCF/QCB which the movement itself ducks and some of his lows And his moves that lend to big damage are generally QCB4 , QCB1 and b2 charged 1 One is high , the other is steppable , and the last one is well...charged, there is also UB2 but most people dont use it, and its not fast All his other launchers only get big damage with rage

While we're talking about the throw game, don't forget he can use his Kongo Blast command grab to just grab a little damage and frame advantage or he can use it as an alternate wallsplat. So close to the wall, you can be expecting that 1+2 break and he can go for the KB, you use the wrong break and he gets the same wall combo afterwards. And that his other 1+2 throw floorbreaks for a full combo. With Paul, it just never ends.

The "New Wall Combo" is identical in damage to the old wall combo (3 2, D1+2) in damage, it just works reliably. Also, didn't they make the 2nd hit of B2,1 -12 on block in S2? I agree that F1+4 didn't need to give a deathfist on hit. Just making it more evasive was all the move needed. Guaranteed deathfist is overkill. At first, I was really confused when they buffed Paul's lows so much, but I notice that a lot of other weakesses characters have had are slowly eroding over time as well. Marshall Law used to be terrible at ranged whiff punishment. Enter 3+4,4. Bryan used to have mediocre WS punishment. Enter S3's FC DF2 1. King's myriad of buffs, Steve's buffs, and I kind of took it as "well, this is how characters are designed now. We're all OP"

There are two versions of b2,1. A slow version where you fully charge the 2nd hit, and a faster version where it's not charged or not charged fully. The fully charged one (which TMM demonstrated) is +8 on block and the faster version is -12 on block. Both are CH launchers, but the safe fully charged version shouldn't CH without a huge error on the other person's part.

@@EternalSilverDragon Yeah, ik, I miss the days when B21 uncharged was safe. I only use B21 as an ender, which makes for a fun mixup. Instant B21 to hit them if they instantly get up, charge to get a chunky hit if they stay grounded. Regardless, B21 isn't safe in practical scenarios outside of that. (Though it's nice that it's no longer negative on hit)

A good comparison is Steve, he has high damage locked behind counter hit combos and high execution.

It has some evasive frames but it's not technically a high crush (there are highs that will hit, for instance it can't evade a ewgf ever afaik because of the low hitbox for a high)

I believe Paul is not the only one who has the jab evasive df2. People are blaming his df2, the fact is safe df2s are universally strong in this game. Furthermore, his df2 is not actually tracking his left side very well. It is just all depending on your df2 timing. I personally think Law`s df2 is better than Paul`s. Of course, if you consider his damage, his df2 with rage always leaves a stronger image than the Law`s.

Hwoarang needs more recovery frames in his flamingo mix-ups. They may be okay for the top pro elitist players but in an online environment they are unbearable. Online many of his flamingo moves end up safe due to even minimal lag. That leads to insane pressure. Hwoarang is way easier to play than he is to fight.

So essentially, Paul should be the sledgehammer of the game. Every character has their gimmicks and Paul's gimmick is damage. The problem in Tekken 7 is that he's too well rounded and has a surprising amount of tricks that he never should have been given.

To be fair all of Marduk's high damage combos, like over 50%, are all off a really slow CH launching string. Paul, Geese, and Fahk can do that damage on NH with relatively safe tools and retarded wall carry. It's just not comparable.

A rival of mine is a yaksa Marduk but is prime with feng. You Will not defeat Marduk without having a perfect throw game and that includes his mount. Marduk is slow so he relies on his mount which I wish it was a little less strict. I feel his throw game on the floor is cheap though, as having to guess between getting destroyed by a throw that leaves you grounded or re tossed in the air for a full combo...eww.

Not really. Marduk can get really cheap damage off with tackle and some other stuff but for really high damage combos he needs guesses with oki throws, rage drive tackles, counter hits, etc. They're not 100% guaranteed, where the cheapest characters like Paul and Geese can fish with safe tools and get 75% easy with very little risk in comparison.

Yesterday I played against Paul. He took my 80% of life with a SAFE df2 while he was in rage. It took me 40 seconds to deplete his life from 100% to 20% and he did a safe df2 combo in RA cancel to take my life. He is a bigger problem than metered characters as they don't have access to such damage without meter. He is TOO SAFE and rewarding at the moment. This is just my opinion.

@@FuryLima I also don't play 2d characters and don't like them tbh. However, they require execution with their cancels like Akuma. with Paul... Zero execution. DF2 has a better range than Feng's or AK's hop kick. Plus it is 15 frames launcher plus it is SAFE plus it recovers like crazy. Why so many safe launchers for a high damage character? I agree his identity is high damage... but high damage should be rewarded after taking risks... not after safe df2 or plus qcb4 which recovers like Hworang's backlash (very hard to whiff punish - especially online)

I've been maining Paul since tag 2 and what i can say is GOD DAMN, this dude's strength is that he's wicked safe. You could make him far more unsafe and i'd still have the exact same playstyle. QCF3 could be a STAGGER low and i'd still use it just as much, F+1+4 should be death on block, D/f 2 could be removed completely and it would make no difference to how good he is at keepout. Just wait patiently for QCB4 couterhit, or sidestep RD for about a billion damage, or hit confirm iWS3, 2 for the same result. I love the character for his extremely effective defensive play, with untouchable whiff punishment and keepout. Just approaching Paul is basically a death sentence. But he should have to jump through more hoops and take bigger risks to get pressure in and crack defensive opponents. That would encourage more creativity with his extremely diverse and unique moveset where players might choose to utilise more sway cancels, snake dashes and iWS moves. No matter which way you slice it, Paul has it all. You could nerf everything mentioned in this video and it wouldn't really hurt him, not to me at least.

Be careful with WS+3,2 - it's not really hit confirmable. You can see the WS+3 hit and then push 2, but the 2 will come out delayed and that allows your opponent to crouch under it and whiff punish you.

@@smashburger6 Ultimately it will come down to your own reactions. It's not hit confirmable to most, but there will be some with crazy reaction speed. Other players' lack of knowledge of what they can do defensively could also be a factor. You can test it in practice mode by setting the dummy to do (1) random guard and (2) crouch. But it's often easier to confirm in matches because you might see them move or start an attack before the WS+3 hits them.

3:57: Paul's new wall combo does 1 point more damage than his old optimal one. The difference is that it works on everyone and never switches sides. 3,2;d1+2 only works on males and often switches sides. And it's not like just doing plain Deathfist as a wall combo is far behind. The real problem with 3,2~b is that it's also a combo filler with more wall carry than df1~b4 or b1,2. Personally I like 3,2~b as a wall combo because it gives Paul the option to do 3,2~b1+2 to force a mixup, which fits the character. 4:04: The Rage Art Cancel is not a problem in regular combos like that. He can get similar damage with his Rage Drive, e.g. CH qcb4;qcf1;df1~b4;JFDM;RD;3,2~b2 for 133. The Rage Art Cancel becomes a problem when you do it at the very end of a long combo, e.g. Paul gets a literal 170 damage death combo from TMM's favorite CH f2,3,1 on Jungle Outpost thanks to it. However, that's not a problem with the Rage Art Cancel, that's a problem with the stage gimmick. The fact that you can get a wall splat, a balcony break, and another wall splat in the same combo is stupid. Or multiple wall breaks for that matter. 6:00: Bringing up ff4 as a "safe launcher" is very misleading, when it's super linear and Paul himself gets an easy, infamous 100+ damage punish for it. 7:00: b2,1 is not safe. It's -12, and it's linear. The charged up version is safe, but you have 60 frames to interrupt it. And ws3,2 is duckable and most people automatically duck after they see the 3 knee because of ff3;ws3,2 in low ranks. I see a lot of people talk about Paul's df2, but that move is exactly where it should be, minus maybe the hitbox. It can't be unsafe, because then his hopkick is the same move but better. If it became a CH launcher, it would be his 2nd fastest CH launcher (CH 4 is 12f), and his fastest mid CH launcher by a massive margin (ub+2 is 20f). So unless you want to remove the move entirely, the only thing that can be done to it is change the hitbox.

I think I miss understand the ff4 punish with +100 dmg, getting sides or back nerfs the combo dmg depend on char, bad wall splat or stuff, good Paul players might have set up to land this on block or hit, it's a real problem tho I would say, if you're good with the char you surely don't go for this move, and add that online fact, I can't personnally react to it, because it's good on opponent wake up, and using sidesteps here are not very recommended except for running moves like generic wr3, so it's mostly impossible to sidestep it to get a punish, when I do play Paul to chill, no one gets the sidestep on this move when I go for it Same for b2,1 ofc it's unsafe, mid mid into big dmg on CH, and again with "online" shit it can be hard to interrupt, it hits grounded, charged or not, the amount of + frames when charged is absurd you have to guess again, it can become a true mindgame too because of the charge animation, it can be canceled during the charge, and what a nightmare of a move at the wall For the new wall ender, I'm pretty ok while it's just getting consistent for him, for this only reason it was fine, but ffs it fills combo perfectly adding good dmg too and wall carry tho into vortex And I should say i'm ok with RA cancel, but thats litterally too much, getting 140+ dmg depending on stages, on a simple staple combo that no one can drop is too much if you take in consideration everything the character have to get rewarded And df2 is a joke in comparison with some other df2, you can just whiff it on purpose with "online" again and getting rewarded on a opponent who dashes on you to punish or take the momentum back, the tracking itself is absurd and his recovery on whiff is just insane I think I'm done for this "brief" opinion I have LUL feel free to answer I'd like to talk more about it :)

@@FuryLima The ff4 punish on Paul is 3,2~b1+2 for launch into a regular combo. Since the 3,2 happens before the launch, they don't count for the combo scaling, and you end up with a fully guaranteed total of 99 damage I think. And even more if you have rage or get a wall. Of course, not everyone gets damage like this for sidestepping ff4, but it's definitely not a "low risk" move. As for b+2,1, you're wrong on one thing: It only hits grounded if you charge it. And b+2,1 is mostly used as a combo ender anyway, since it prevents tech rolling. The RA cancel has to be put into context with his RD though. In a walled stage without gimmicks, his RA and RD deal just about the same damage. In infinite stages, his RD is crap, but the difference between using his RA cancel and just a full RA as a combo ender is

IMO, Season 4 seems to have left Paul in almost the same place which is not as interesting as I think he could be. Here’s some buff/nerf ideas interesting for Paul. Great video TMM as always!! Just one little thing you forget about Paul´s throw game : he has another 1 break throw that wallsplats into wall combo. The input is df1+3 : qcf2 in "just frame" because it´s not that hard to do. But as i mention before great content keep it up !!

What you forgot is that he is very slow and his low are still not that good because of range making it very hard for him to mix you up unless his up close which only gives him demo man as a mix up option and when blocked you die. his punishment and poking also sucks as the fastest he can get is 1, 2 which does very little damage compared to other players. QCF 3 is not really that fast even though it has good range it is also launch punishable at -14. His best launchers come from counter hit which are for the most part slow. the natural launchers are either too slow or if fast don't actually do much damage, insert DF 2. Put all that together and you realise that as powerful as he is he really sucks up close and at pressure meaning he really is best played defensively and at distance and all the things you mentioned play to those strengths so I see balance there.

The problem with the Phoenix Smasher, I think, is because of the pushback. It's punishable, sure, but you have a narrower window than -17 because you need to close the gap first (he's probably closer to -14 or -15 accounting for most scenarios). You're better off just trying to sidestep it.

UNPOPULAR OPINION TIME: Here's the thing though - Tekken is very different for high level players and low level players. These little details TMM points out surely make sense to high-level/competitive players. But low-level tekken, where most players usually are, including yours truly, needs to be more fun than balanced. When playing offline with friends, who are at similar skill levels, there's a fun element there because we often spam moves, disregard frames, and just go balls out crazy and even button mashing when cornered. And as long as these new/non-competitive players pay equal money as high skilled ones, Bandai Namco will have to keep some buffs they created. For example, Leroy nerf makes sense, but some of us plebs still miss his d 1+2 CH launch. Gigas feels like an incomplete character to serious/high-level players, but for us he's fun, because we keep spamming d2 or db2. Point is, the game needs to retain some of these "ridiculous" moves to cater to base-level/new players.

Unga punga?? Deathfist and demoman is not a thing anymore in high level of plays, and he is really predictable what he is gonna do. There is no a single pro player complaining about him, and especially now he is not broken anymore after the season 4 rage art cancel nerf. Unga bunga is a Leroy, Alisa player, not a Paul player at all. He remains a strong character, but not an op character.

Paul's df2 should be like Josie's. It should launch crouchers but is punishable on hit. You could even increase the damage on df2 itself a little bit, just make it unsafe

@@jwade3184 I'm not too familiar with Josie, but it looks like her df2 has better range than her hop kick, while her hop kick (obviously) crushes lows. So, I guess which one she uses depends on range. Paul's hop kicks have good range, so they would have to buff the range of his df2 (as you say) and probably also nerf the range of his hop kicks, but I don't think they would want to do that nerf.

It's why I pay little attention to videos like this. The focus is on the character's strengths on paper while ignoring their weaknesses in actual matches. Most times Knee uses Paul in tournaments, it's as a counter pick to Jack. No one as been as successful with Paul, so why nerf him based on the proficiency of 1% of players.

- df2 should be -12 and not crush high 1 jab. During matches i could not believe his df2 was so strong since i never checked his frames before. After getting my kazumi 1 jab pokes crushed with it and launched for big damage I tried to punish it. My opponent did this move 4 times. The first 3 times i tried to punish with 12f move because i could not believe it. The 4th time i tried 10f punisher and still on punish. Then i knew it was OP. Minimum it should be -11 on block. Risk / reward is just ridiculous. - trooper roll is also broken with delay it is very hard to sidewalk and so often you still get clipped. If it is sidewalked half the time you are so off axis kazumi cannot even punish it. It should at least be -4 on block to give up turn. - SS3 - funny how they removed kazumi mini combo after df4 on counter hit and paul gets a full combo for a faster low.

- D/f+2 launchers in this game are generally either -12 on block but launch duckers, or are completely safe but don't launch duckers. Paul's fits into the latter category. - The Trooper Roll has to be one of the most linear approaching weapons out there, and is also super-telegraphed. If you're having issues sidestepping it because of delay, then that's a problem with T7's dogshit netcode, not with Paul.

If Paul's df2 was -12, it would be an obsolete move. It would be a 15f mid that's -12 on block and doesn't launch crouchers, while his hopkick is also a 15f -12 mid, but it launchers crouchers, tracks well, hits low to the ground, and crushes lows.

Can we talk about how much damage Paul does on large characters with df1, 1, qcf2 at the wall. Example knee changed from devil Jin to Paul against anakins jack7 when he was down 2 in losers bracket in the 2019 Tekken world tour finals and came back and won.

His mixup is absolutely abysmal you have to watch for maybe 2 lows, 1 of which is easy to spot. He is "safe" but he sacrifices unpredictability. Yeah if you get hit by his launchers is hurts, but first you have to actually get hit by them, if youre playing tournaments then youre playing to win so instead of playing like you want, or whats most fun change up your play-style a bit to be safe or endlessly pressure him, many of his high reward attacks are safe but also have a wind up.

And after playing all these guys and just barely getting to vanquisher I can safely say that I have absolutely no problems with playing "Cheap and Easy" characters. A win is a win, if you lose against a character then that's your problem.

AK's FF 2 is nothing compared to pauls FF 2 and its followups, not to mention his armor move is 0 on block and gives a decent follow up if the opponent keeps pressing buttons unlike AK's armor move which isnt plus. And ofc... Death fist to deal with people who like to press buttons.

It does not launch crouching opponents though, like Shaheen's df2. TMM doesn't tell you that for some reason. It is still EASILY one of the top df2 in the game. But it is silly to exclude such a detail.

Players always knock Paul for high damage combos. But other character's can and do cause just as much damage. When it comes to being evasive other characters like Steve can do a far better job of it than paul can ever do. Demoman gets parried a lot even in low ranks so realistically it's only useful as a combo finisher. Ff2-2 bulldozer launcher gets blocked or parried from green ranks onwards so is basically useless in ranked play. F1+4 is evasive but is the only move paul has that sidesteps without needing to actually sidestep and I think it can be ducked. Paul is 1 of the most popular characters in the game and therefore 90% of player's know the matchup very well. If Paul wasn't such a heavy hitter it would be pointless playing him.

Dude ik he has a Ridiculous damage but every single one of those launchers that you've mentioned here are highs ,infacts most of his moves ends up in being high guard, he's only a problem in early or yellowish ranks, you need to rely on your defense in high ranks because most of the people know this matchup plus his qcf3 is the only good low because you need to be at point blank to get a 50/50 Demoman unlike kazuya's hellsweeps which hits you from like half off the map, he's a linear character and not as much op as people think.

Paul isnt as good as people think, yeah sure he has safe moves, but those safe moves dont really give him really strong advantages, especially against aggrerssive players that has good strings and pokes that open him up. Paul isnt good at opening people up, a heavy qcf paul user always get beat by just a backdash or if you can a BD cancel just make him whiff even the df2 is really easy to bait. I leave a question to you guys, If paul was really that good at tournaments, why hasnt anyone won with him yet? only few people could use him properly like Knee, Joey Fury, Justice and Jisang (whos kinda retired). Pauls sidestep isnt even that good, its just mediocre and if youre gonna tell me about his 12 frame homing b1,2 poke, its really not that good its both high. About his throw game, of vourse he has lots of it his style is Mixed martial arts based on Judo. Paul is only a problem against people that doesnt know how to deal with him coz of lack of exp, one of my main go to shutdown moves for Paul is a generic 13 frame df1 (every character has one but not all ofcourse), magic 4s, low pokes and sidestep/walk left and duck

you realize that if you try and spam d/f+1 against Paul, he'll just standing 4 counter hit and launch you, right? If you try and use a magic 4, he can just qcf+3 counter hit and launch you. And the d/f+2 might be easy to bait, but if you can punish it, what does it matter? Saying that Paul is anywhere below S tier is just disingenuous. And what do you mean, "those safe moves don't really give him really strong advantages"? They're safe tools with good range that often do something on counterhit, how are they in anyway bad? I disagree. Paul should be buffed by adding a just frame deathfist that is flaming (like Ken's heavy DP in street fighter) and it launches and is plus+5 with EWGF pushback on block

You give Paul way too much credit. "High level play" doesnt really happen online where a majority of players duke it out, and is moreso speaking of the bracket of pros where Paul's presence is barren. Any player worth their salt would absolutely destroy him because while he is strong, Paul is predictable. Most of his tricks are only viable against people who are none the wiser to him, and the real game to someone playing AS Paul is playing Tekken like Poker so you dont immediately get called out and blown up over a Death Fist or any of his other infamous attacks. The man is only able to fleece the inexperienced.

People talk about DF2 (which is indeed overpowered) being mid as if it was an actual mid- it's a mid that doesn't launch crouching, you just get frames and some damage. So it's still stupid but it's not Leroy stupid at least. Another counter to him being OP is that if you just play defensively, Paul has a VERY hard time opening people who know the matchup (which is basically EVERYONE since he's the most played character...). If you are patient and step at range, Paul will struggle to get in on you to do anything actually scary. At US blue ranks I can almost never land a CH launch on people, because everyone knows the matchup and plays patiently and so you are left with lucky df2 fishing which doesn't actually do very impressive damage even on the "hard" staple of df2, qcf1, 3,2~b4 dash demoman. It's -good- damage but it's not Leroy or Fahk damage.

paul has a good poking game to open people up what he actually lacks is good approach tools outside of trooper roll and if he had approach tools it would pretty much just be game over, fighting paul would be harder than fighting fahk

@@gwemlgweml9015 His point is that unless the opponent your fighting is an actual scrub, its way harder to get away with Paul's "bullshit"... There is a reason Leroy and fahkumram are being played in and dominating season 3 tournaments/online events and not Paul Phoenix. So if you hard nerf Paul like a lot of these comments seem to want, hed be pretty useless at high level. Besides almost every character in the game has some sort of "bullshit" whether thats hellsweep or snake edge, or grab/throw characters, or claudios hopkick, etc. its part of the game learning to deal with that stuff - instead of complaining about it.

@@abirneji his poking game doesn't open people up though, that's my point. His key low poke is qcf3 and is +0 on hit, meaning he gains no momentum from landing it. ss4 also exists but is much shorter range and if you space out Paul and play defensively you really shouldn't be getting hit by any of his mid pokes either since the lows aren't scary

As combo damage and wall game get spotlighted, his classic launcher set becomes more powerful as well - and nerfing legacy moves must be tough. Also, he's gained so many damn moves over the years... There was a time when Shredder Kicks was an okay follow-up from df2.

But you need wall. Lots of characters have lows that lead to wall splats and can give the same amount of damage.

I play online in pakistan(asia region).. and i regularly get whiff punished when i try df 2 too much with paul.. also df2 is not 100% homing.. a lot of characters can sidestep/sidewalk it.. so df2 is not spamable or broken...I think the only nerf paul should get is the rage art cancel and he will be fine... Qcb2 is also side steppable...Qcb4 is a high and can be ducked and launched...death fist also side steppable... Playing paul is only fun at low or mid ranks.. as soon as you climb up, you will notice opponents have strong defense and movement and they dont run into your df2 as often and dont eat death fist often... And that is the time paul becomes really hard to play with and break turtle as his poking is not that good... Also for big damage paul depends on a wall or on rage.. otherwise without wall and without rage paul's damage is average at best... So yes paul is a greatly misunderstood character, even by an experience players like TMM... If TMM plays paul against a pro or high level players, he will start to see the issues i explained above...

I like to play as Paul. I think as a character in gameplaywise, he is like Ken form Street fighter. He is safe guy with Red gi, blonde hair and strong moveset. You could take something away, its even somewhat looked upon, but they won't cause he's goddamn Paul Phoenix. Just like Ken Master is for street fighter. And I'm okay with that. They are also somewhat rivals of Kazya and Ryu, the main guys. At least Paul used to be that. Now he fights bears like Zangief does, so he needs that muscle.

@@nginroom8108 but it's not the character's fault... like there are some issues that really need to be fixed. I main Ling, and when they nerfed AOP in S2 I was happy. The move was stupid and evaded EVERYTHING, now she is okey. They nerfed a bit too much and removed one of her key CH launchers too but that is another story. My point is, Ling was not every tournament winner, but clearly needed fixes! For example I see Julia, wall carry and dmg is stupid, her frames, mix ups and ff1 need tweaks. ff1 def needs a nerf. Has anyone took major tournaments with her? No. Only 1 guy 1 time in the top 6 Leroy tourney, and didn't win (named Mikio). Even a tournament winning character doesn'r necessarily mean it is good or needs nerf. For example: Rangchu/Panda.
