In my 10 year reading of Quran, I would conclude: Because imams did not understand or had forgotten a Quranic verse and with them the people too: "Ilel ledhine amenu we amilus salihati" "Those who believe and do good deeds" Mentioned about 52 times, never seperated always together, belief and good deed. Since we have been to scared about deviation and obsessed with turning people to the right path and belief we almost forgot about the good deed wich back then was removing a rock from the road and today is building roads, cities, hospitals, schools in other words being the best in science and tech. As long as we focus on belief, tawheed and shaaira only, like this is where everything begin and ends and don't see that God never seperates belief from good deed, leaving them paralel, we will never succeed.
