John Frusciante has the best wah sound IMO, especially the way he uses it during improvised solos live (also there is a really cool guitar lesson session with him, where he showcases it in an epic solo). Actually I think less is often more with the wah. For example I really like Jimi turning it on for a solo and then leave it, just to kick the sound. Electric funeral is a great example for a dark sound. Voodoo childe is the climax of wah history.

Excellent demonstration. The only thing missing was the 'cocked wah' or 'parked wah' technique characteristic of players like Mick Ronson, who used the wah set to a particular position purely as a filter, to emphasise a particular section of the mids. There are now pedals dedicated to reproducing these static sounds, but at the time 'parking' a wah was the only way to do it.
@dreyn77803 жыл бұрын
It was a terrible sound video. JH signature equipment doesn't work outside of the set of JH pedals. Clearly YOU can hear there was NO 1960's Thomas wah sound at all. If YOU were right VOX would take dunlop to court and beat them with a big stick.

A method that I use is while playing a ld gtr solie, I’d wander out in the crowd and have my sax player operate the wah. I told him to move it slowly to accentuate where in the scale the note was, not rock it back and forth like you did in your Pink Floyd demonstration. As I approach the end of the lead, depending on the song, I would climb up the fretboard to a climatic ultra high note bend and make the wah climb from heel down slowly to toe down on that last note. This accentuates my notes within the statement or “paragraph” quite well.
@CyberDocUSA6 жыл бұрын
Terrific demonstration video. Glad I found your channel.
@archie3k4334 жыл бұрын
Depending on how your wah pedal sounds, you can also do stuff like engage it and rock it back just a bit from the toe-down position, and leave it there.. It's just another tonal option.. Sometimes if I'm playing along to a backing track of an actual song (without lyrics track) I'll use this... For example, if I'm playing the Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower, I'll have the wah pedal on but slightly pulled back, and I'll use this during the verses because it subdues the sound (darkens it somwhat). Then whenever I'm coming up on one of Jimi's actual lead fills, I'll push the wah all the way down, bringing out the full range of frequencies, and then play his lead fills... So it's like, his lead fills sound present whereas the random stuff I'm making up inbetween his fills (where the verse lyrics would normally be going on), the stuff I'm making up sounds more subdued... Rather than just improving wide open the entire time.... It's something to play around with anyway. The only times I really do this are when I'm playing along backing tracks like All Along the Watchtower or Comfortably Numb and I want to do subdued improv during the verses/chorus.

I'm not a guitar player, but I've always wondered how these cool sounds are made. Thank you for sharing your expertise!

Hi. Try listening to the king of wah, Brian Robertson formerly of Thin Lizzy. As an example listen to his solo in the track Warriors from the album Jailbreak. Awesome.

I always thought I was weird for mouthing "wah" while using the wah pedal. Glad to see that I'm not alone on this Paul. Nice video as well

TY for starting the video vv/the solution to fixing the vvah-squeek that all nevv vvah pedals have. The 2nd day I ovvn my crybaby vvah I vvas sooo sick of the squeek I opened it & fixed it ( I'd normally NEVER do it myself & take it to a shop but this experience made me vvilling to fix my ovvn stuff aftervvards ) & vvas happy vv/it aftervvard. Also TY for pointing out that D. Gilmour uses a vvah on the solo in comfortaly numb, even though I've heard it thousands of times I never picked up on it being there. TY again & keep up the great vvork .

4:11 Nice little detail. A lot of people don't know that little wah lick from "Voodoo Child" was done with the pickup selector.
@akmadsen4 жыл бұрын
Do you have a source on that, because that doesn't sound right. The sweep movement is much too smooth for a pickup selector with only 5 states (like on a strat), besides, the filtering from a wah creates a peak whereas switching pickup positions produce a more shelf like shape. Hendrix is using a Vox wah pedal here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5OtZImDqZusnLc

@@akmadsen It's a pretty easy trick to accomplish. Just set the neck tone to 1. Just listen to the lick from the studio version closely. You can actually hear the sound of the selector clicking. If you play a Strat, it's a very distinct sound that you'll recognize immediately. It's definitely a different sound than what Jimi got from his pedal.

@@williamrusso3130 Trust me, I've listened to it closely for several decades and I don't believe for a second that he's using the pickup selector for the wah effect. No matter how you dial the tone knobs, you're not going to achieve anything that's going to be mistaken for an actual wah. But hey, if you can show me a reliable source for it, I'll happily be convinced otherwise, but you'll have to find something more convincing than "just listen".

Inspirational!!! My Jim Dunlop Cry Baby pedal has been sitting on my shelf for years. Almost forgot I had it. Your video is so cool. I will blow the dust off the pedal box and start using it again today. Thanks.
