You’re sooo right about the traumatising school experience! I think PE should go away from marks and tests and focus on introducing pupils to sports they might like to do for the rest of their lives to stay healthy. PE focusing on the kids who need excercise and not those who are sporty anyways. The latter are on sports clubs anyways already. Introducing the other kids to the idea that moving can be fun, would be the most important thing

You're right. I always feel a little down when I don't get out for a run or walk. Running and walking helps me relax, get out, see and sometimes meet people who also just like to be outside, and it makes not only my mood and head feel better but just my body overall. I completely understand what you mean cause of I don't run or walk I always regret it and the very next day make up for it. Use to hate running but grew to love it the more I made myself do it to at first lose weight and fat then after I did I just always felt almost at peace during and after a run

Loving this video, I can relate as my girlfriend is that one person that hates running XD. Also, I'm jealous of your beautiful forests. When I lived in Sweden I had so many deer encounters in the forests around Stockholm... it gets so wild, so fast. In Taiwan... there's plenty of steep mountains, but not many flat forests. That's good too, but it's more tiring :)

had never thought about the gym class running trauma. Our elementary/primary school has a fun run and the kids all start practicing for it throughout the year - hopefully it is fun for them. Also, 100% on the advice. I always tell new runners, go slow, forget about pace/distance expectations, and go somewhere cool and beautiful!

You are totally correct. Especially the first part where people go out and run at sprinter pace for as long as they can. And since they run much too fast, they fizzle out in a minute or so and think that running is not for them. When I first started out running at age 17 (because I felt so unfit and I had read somewhere that running improves mental capacity) I ran for exactly 3 min before I had to stop. Luckily, I read a book about running not long after that demotivating 3min sprint. The books said I should slow down to a speed that I could hold a conversation and to build up the time over several months. I followed that advice. I went out every day slower but still only managed 7 min the second time around. However, I persisted, by giving myself small goals: every week I would try to add another minute to my run. Before I knew it, I ran an hour effortlessly. Many decades and higher degrees later ( running does improve intellectual capacity :) ) I am still running around 10 km at least four times a week. Sadly, I have never had any natural environments to run in; only city streets and the occasional run through a park. But this doesn't matter. I just enjoy being able to run.

This channel has been a great motivation for my running. Thanks, Goran. I'm 61 yo and have been trying to like running, on and off, for 15 years. Pulled hamstring, fractured metatarsal, Achilles tendon, spinal disk issues, knee problems, each sidelined me for long stretches, and even during the best of time my limit was 15 minutes and I could not get my breath, and ached for days. Today I ran an easy 25 minutes, breathing through my nose the whole time, on my toes, with a cadence of 160 BPM, that I'm working to get up to 180. No single secret. Running 5 minutes a day for 6 weeks before going to 10 minutes. Had poor hip flexor cause knee pain, and I figured out how to strengthen them. Learned to do static stretches only after arun. Had some hip mobility issues now that my gluts are getting strong, and pinch a hip nerve when going uphill, but will work on improving hip mobility and will pause if it gets worse. It can be complicated if you start late, but it's worth it in my opinion.

Man I wish I lived near some beautiful nature like yourself! If I go about 1km I can get to a cement pathway on a strip of grass with a few occasional trees. I hate American cities/towns because they are so damn car centric. There's a really great hiking state park about 1hr 15 away from me via car, but that's a ways to go and it's also costs like $8 to enter so I'm not gonna frequent it.

Hi Göran, great video! Very beautifully filmed too, as always. I agree with everything you said. I was one of those kids who was traumatized at school when I had to do a Cooper test in 6th grade but had never been given an introduction to running before. I don't think I'm naturally very gifted as a runner, I was a gymnast and am much better at strength sports than at running, but running has just always been something that I thought I should be able to do (it seems like such a natural thing for humans to do) and I really wanted to be able to do it without feeling like I'm dieing at the same time. So two years ago I started running and it was super hard at first but I stuck with it because I wanted to get better at it, I liked how I felt after a run, and I just really enjoyed being in nature, especially in winter when not that many other people went outside. As I got a little better at running I started pushing it way too hard (I'm an ambitious person) and developed a knee injury last fall - classic beginner mistake I guess. For a while I couldn't even walk properly, let alone run, and it wasn't easy to get back into it, but since I remembered the feeling of being able to enjoy even just a few of my previous runs I really wanted to get back to running. My knee has gotten a lot better since I started doing short runs more frequently and stopped worrying about the pace, and I am now able to run much further than I ever could before, and faster as well. I'm still a beginner of course and not fast at all but really enjoy running now even when it doesn't feel that easy, and I am going to do my first ever 5k and 10k races this year. I'm still in my twenties, so I hope to have many years ahead of me to improve my running. I love how beautiful and positive your videos are, they really inspire me to go out for a run on days when I don't really feel like it!

The amount of times I’ve heard “the doctor said I can’t …..” it’s usually the go to saying for people who enjoy eating more than staying fit. My recommendation for people just starting out is finding a comfortable time limit (15-20 minutes) and just walk. Then change to a slow jog and walk and slowly increase running. I’m sure if you go to the doctor, they are not saying “you can’t run”. I’m sure they are saying “you’re not fit to run at that pace, slow it down”.

Good video , to start running you have to prepare your body and knees for it!! I started running three months ago at age of 57 , slow runs , deep breathing, from 50 min each runs I am down to 36 min run, same distance, I got addicted to the amount of oxygen that i breath in , it gives you energy and it has so many health benefits, your heart is the most important muscle in your body. The best exercise for heart!!! Always start slow , concentrate on breathing, not the distance!!

I’m naturally terrible at running. I’ve been weighting for 7 years and am physically now built like a professional athlete. I’ve done the elliptical probably 1000 times. However, I must admit, I never once had a mile time better than 10 minutes. I’ve never even been able to run for more than a quarter mile without walking. Even my friend who literally just started working out has a better mile time than me. This has convinced me to start running to at least prove to myself that I can be a better than average runner. I’ve taken a lot of inspiration from David Goggins as his build is very similar to mine.

Today for instance I woke up a little late (later then usual) and noticed shortly after that I didn't have much time left before I had to leave for work but running is so important to me I was able to fit in a 15min power run in the 30min a had before I left for work. You'll find also that most military vets hate running and won't run again once they're out. I'm not a natural athlete. My recovery times are pretty slow and I just don't put on a whole lot of muscle or get faster. So when I joined the army right after high school, I had the worst 4 years of my life. I was constantly sore and felt miserable for most of those 4 years. Depending on your unit, you'll run with your squad (about 7-10 people), or your platoon (which is ~ 5 squads) and break down into run groups. It was a struggle for me because I was a 190 lb 6' guy trying to keep up with guys who were like 150-160 lbs. Runs for them were "too easy" meanwhile I'm dying. And I don't think its a unique experience either. I picked up running again in my early 30's and its been a battle fighting that urge to always push myself, to not go further just because I think I can and screw up my recovery windows.

I started "hating" running recently. When i was young i was fairly good with a 19:17 in a 6k road race at 17yo and a 36: 10 at a 10k road race just a few weeks later that year (1997). Unfortunately i had to stop running due to an achilles tendon rupture. Many years later i restarted running but its been borderline impossible to run for more than a few months without an injury popping up specially in my right leg. I had my gait checked out and seems like my right leg pronates a lot and much more than the left leg leading to a weird running form where my right leg seems to stay a bit behind the left (a sort of dragging) leading to recurrent injuries. I just stopped running and im currently just 100% focused on gym work. Maybe one day i try it out again. I still have the running itch in me. 😃

Now its knee pain, other times is plantar fascitis, peritonitis, hips... its frustrating not being able to exercise, so finally I started at the gym. There i never get injured. I really like running, but my body doesnt. And I have to take care of my body, so I dont run a lot anymore and do other kinds of exercise.

Great advice 👍🏻 I started running to improve as a cyclist and to add a different (and more time efficient) way of training to my routine. I never really liked it and just did it to improve on my fitness and health. That is until I went for my first trail run - which I absolutely loved. So now I would say I dislike road running, but like trail / fell running. A big factor in that as well is that I never really managed to improve on my speed whilst running, but in trail running your speed doesn't really matter that much, it's more about what's around you, what you see and hear and smell, it's more about those little things like spotting deer or catching a sunrise than about achieving a PR or being faster than other people. And personally I find jumping over roots and rocks and getting dirty jumping into puddles and mud is way more fun than even terrain 🙃 I would say all that could be a big factor for many people who dislike running.

It's a great way to injuries tho, start running wile in great shape but your muscles and tendons are not prepared at all. To be fair I find it hard to motivate people for running, often I just start introduce some one to fitness first before running just to activate systems in a more controlled way.

Absolutely can relate to the "running in school" thing. I hated it. Growing up with asthma and seriously diminished lung capacity, I struggled to run 800 meters at any pace. Health improved towards the late teens and I picked up cycling... I did some running, because health benefits and all that, and I just needed to take a look at my father to see what a lack of excerise can do even if you're otherwise reasonably healthy, but it wasn't until I switched to barefoot (and a bit later barefoot shoes) until it started to be fun. I still don't do it nearly as often as I'd want to, and I to me, cycling is still 1000 times more fun, but it is fun. Ten years ago, I never thought I'd say that 😅 20 years ago, I never thought I'd be able to run 10 k without stopping. Let alone half marathon distance. Now that I did both, I know those were not the limit...

I ran for sports in high school, then I felt like I was doing nothing in college. I started running for fun but I was always alone. Years passed and I finally came to meet several others in my city that loved running too. So now I run a few times a week alone but long run with my group of friends over weekends

As a teen I'd have no problem with 5k's or 10k's. Four years of desk job post graduation and I finally flipped the switch on cardio training. I started out running 2k's. I knew I could do way more but 2k's was all I could motivate myself to do. I even said to myself to not go for more if I "felt like it" when on my run, because I did not want to betray my own motivation. I went out of the door for a 2k. If I wanted to do a 3k then I should've said that to myself before going out. Now four months later I did a 12k for the first time in a looong time. Not that I couldn't do it before if I wanted to, but because I wanted to slowly build up so that my joints could have time to adapt. The great thing is that with my new cardio goals I'm doing regular traditional strength training to supplement my training, which is something I never wanted to do before. But now it's all in function of my own personal cardio goals and that's reason enough for me to do it, striving for a better performance every month.

I think you got the point of traumatic experience during obligatory running in school gym classes. I was the case. Recently, I told myself to just try it once more just by my own and with my dogs and it was really pleasant yet I still can t and don t want to run in company with some other human runners. I told myself to held on running for minumum 21 days for creating the good habit of it and it really worked. Not only I didn t quit but I enjoy my running sessions more and more. Now, after 1,5 months I m on the runs of 10-12 kms in easy pace just for fun and I really like it.

There are days where I'm really struggling to get up and go on a run. On those days I tell myself that a short run is better than nothing at all as I then keep the habit going instead of skipping the run. If I were to skip a run it will become easier to make excuses for the next run and before you know it all progress will be lost. As a bonus those short runs often become a lot longer than expected once I get going 😊

Running in nature can definitely be great but honestly I also love running in a crowded city where I have to be mindful of my surroundings all the time, especially when I run alone. It's just another way for me to be more focussed on the present. P.S. Great video. This really clears up a lot and might try to motivate others to work on themselves as well :)

Indeed, you start hating running when you finish all your runs exhausted. It is very difficult to turn down the pace because you want this dopamine rush when you get back. Finishing your run without the feeling that you have actually done something is pretty frustrating. But I have learnt the hard way. I started running half marathons too fast and I totally messed up my legs. Walked like a cripple for one week and could only go to the gym lift weights for upper body training. Started very slow after one week of rest of running and gradually build up again. It is good to push that reset button once a while. You have to make sure that you finish you run not too exhausted. If you do it is mentally difficult to start your next run.

Iv only been running for the last 2 years. Started out using C25k and managed a half marathon but I really didn't like running at all. I actually thought there was something wrong with me for not liking running because it was only the completion of the challenge is what made me run rather than the run itself. However, I have just discovered the maffetone method last month and for the first time, I actually enjoy running. So much so that I look forward to my long run, currently 24km, I couldn't even run 1km 2 years ago. I wish I knew about running slow to start with and not thinking its all about going all out every run. The only downside now is, there are no slow running clubs, they are all about speed where I live.

i have lost some partners because they want to rip it real fast on the flats, and i want to go explore hilly trails and forget about pace. I hear you on clubs. I heard on another channel that club runs always turn into tempos half way through and all out sprints at the end - ha ha ha. Is there a trail or ultra community near you? I think that's a better way to find people who just want to run slow, happy, injury free.

@@taylorlayton4508 I'm not sure if its a French thing as I live in Dijon but I went on a trail run with a local group and it was harder than the half marathon I did and I ended up with injuries so unfortunately I will be running solo until I am able to enjoy running faster.

As for me, once I realised training for a run is similar to leveling up your character in an RPG games, it feels so much fun and rewarding. This is possible with health watch to keep track of your running performance. The data helps you to measure where your current level is and what milestone to reach to level-up, like RPG

Thanks for the tips! I started running a few weeks ago. I’ve only run on a treadmill and I really do love it. I’ve ran between 3km - 5km 4-5 days a week. I warm up and cool down as well as stretch after but after a run I can’t lift my left, it hurts to get in the car and today I left the gym in tears. I reAlly really enjoy running but I don’t know what I’m doing wrong to cause this pain on my left side. It’s actually becoming unbearable. If you have any advice, I would be so appreciative. I really don’t want to have to stop completely. I just started 💔

its easy to hate running. if you are not trained at all running will push your heart rate very high very quickly. thats exhausting and for many people simply no fun. its quite a challenge to run extremely slow in order to keep your heart rate down. thats no fun either. so many quit again. running is fun as soon as you have a good balance between your cardio vascular system, your muscles and your weight. if those are in good shape you can enjoy running and also push yourself.

I ran when I was younger but never really liked it. Recently I started running again and stumbled upon Low Heart Rate running technique where 80% of runs are slow and heart rate is at a comfortable level all the time in these runs. A month in the low heart rate system and I started to love running. The constant near your max heart rate that I used to do is what made me dislike it in the first place. So simple yet it makes a world of a difference.

first: i.love runming! but today your video is like a pretty bad motivation. I struggle with injuries for the last couple of years. I had to recover every couple of weeks for like 8-10 weeks. Which completely ruined my achievements. Last octobre i was at like 50-60km per week. Then i had to pause because of an injury. Then surgery in februaey (venes in my calves) and the dr said i can restart after a couple of days?! The struggle went on.... Last monday i went for a 2k run. And i was barly able to walk. My calves feel like super sore... and still today 8 days later barly able to walk. I went through massage.... inlays.... accupunture.... bloodwork... surgery.... compression socks.... new/other shoes... weight refuction from 87 to like 77kg at 180 cm... changes my diet.... personal coach .... norhing helped. Btw 2016 i finished a marathon in like 4:04 at like 30°C at age of 39. So nothing extreme i guess. But i am about to give up.... unless there is a new idea. I like how you explain running!

So true. Also coopers test is only 12 minutes, even though it feels a lifetime to run 🤣. But if you have a mind set to go for a run for 12 minutes it doesn't sound so bad 😅 For some reason my toxic mind says "oh 12 minutes, well that's not worth to go out, must be at least 30 minutes" 🤡BTW I have had migraines too but one thing what has helped a lot is a bite rail (bitskena) because I tent to grind my teeth unconsciously when I'm stressed. Apparently the teeth grinding effects to the neck muscles too and causes migraines. Hopefully it's something that you could test too and find effective. BTW congratulations for (SWE Stora Tuna OK) the orienteering win in Jukolan viesti for the 3rd time. 🎩

Ok yeah that’s a common problem, just start building up with super short and slow runs, and keep the majority of your runs at a slow and comfortable pace that will build your body strong and also able to handle some faster runs if you want to do that 😊

My longest run is 10 minutes at barely 6 mph. My heart rate is at max by then and I'm in complete oxygen debt. I've tried to go further but it's like torture. I can walk several miles at 3+ mph as easy as sitting in a chair. I don't understand why running on a flat surface is so much harder than walking uphill.
