My father, also, trained Ethiopians to be civil engineers. I am proud to have been born in Ethiopia under the rule of Haile Selassie.

As a Child I grew up in Ethiopia, and lived in Addis Ababa for several years. One Easter we were invited to celebrate Easter at the Palace. The Emperor gave me a gift, it was a space ship made in Japan, run by batteries. I have fond memories of Ethiopia. Greetings from Indonesia.

I love Ethiopia, its culture, its diversity, its music and its history. I wish the best for Ethiopia, and I hope that I wil visit it soon. In Mexico we have a square named after Ethiopia, for the friendship our country had with ethiopia during selassie's time. In Mexico a lot of people protested the Italian invasion, that is why the emperor was fond of Mexico for supporting it during the 30s. That small chapter is highlighted in the book of the canadian author interviewed in the documentary, the book is called Prevail by Jeff Pearce. Relations with Ethiopia were renewed after the Derg regime collapsed.

Ermias Zemichael That is amazing, I didn'r know that. There is also a subway station on that square. In Mexico they also tried to change the name, because of a public relations campaign of the government that was in turn back in the early 2000s of their new reforms and policies. But people have kept calling the subway station as Ethiopia, and still people keep calling that station by its old name, the subway station uses a lion as a symbol.

It's true about everything they said about Haile Selassie. My father was a product of the Emperor's vision of modernising education in Ethiopia. My father received an engineering scholarship to study in the prestigious Emperor Haile Selassie University in Addis Ababa where he was taught Kinematics and Physics by one of Albert Einstein's students(Swiss national). There were scholarships offered to students from various other African countries. Dad had the pleasure of meeting HIM in one of the university's functions and recalled his demeanour to be regal and elegant, like that of a renowned Monarch..

One of Selassie's greatest speeches is acknowledgment that Ethiopia is indeed African and the people are Black, due to the propaganda Europeans were putting out that Italy had lost twice to them. Good attempt to educate the world about Ras Tafari (later Emperor Haile Selassie) and his place in Ethiopian and World History. However, as a political historian, I can easily see that there are numerous errors and a lot of confusion about the images of the personalities you mention at the beginning. For example, in the images, Emperor Menelik was depicted as Ras Makonnen, the Emperor's father, Lij Eyasu, Haile Selassie's rival, who inherited the Solomonian throne after Menelik’s death was depicted as Haile Selassie’s' brother, Dejazmatch Yilma Makonnen, then Ras Makonnen Haile Selassie's father was portrayed as Ras Tafari who was, as narrated in the video, "appointed Regent by Menelik's daughter Empress Zewditu." In reality Ras Tafari was appointed Regent by the Shoan nobility who decided to overthrow the outsider Eyasu (who was from Wallo not Shoa, the power centre at the time and had a Moslem ancestry.) One of the narrators in trying to exhibit his knowledge of Ethiopian Ethnicity, mentions three foremost linguistic groups of Ethiopia out of the 83 as Amhara, Oromo and Gurage. While he is right on the Oromo and Amhara tally that together comprise of 60% of the Ethiopian population, he is dead wrong on the demographic significance of the Gurage's. According to the latest census records, the Gurages represent only 2.5% of the Ethiopian population. Ahead of them are the Somali 6.2%, Tigray, 6.1% and the Sidama 4%. In the narrative also, even though it is mentioned that some 300 monks and priests were massacred at Debre Libanos, and it was intimated that the modern educated Ethiopian youth were systematically eliminated by Mussolini's Fascists, no mention was made of the Fascist’s use of poison gas on civilian targets killing close to 1, 000, 000, 000 out of the estimated 7,000, 000,000 Ethiopian population of the time. The narrator was wrong when he suggested that at the time of his overthrow, the emperor was not aware of the growth of socialist ideas all over the globe. In fact, the historian, Berkeley mentions that when he saw him as Regent in 1916, Ras Tafari (later Emperor Haile Selassie) was reading The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Frederick Engels. When the British author asked him how a prince of the Ethiopian crown could be attracted to the ideas of Karl Marx, Ras Tafari’s reply was: 'It is important to know one's enemy in-depth!" He some where seems to say it is like irresponsible to let a 14 years teenager lead a state. His Majesty Lig Iyasu was only 18 when he took over the throne from his Grandfather Emperor Minilik. The royal families were indeed trained towards leadership since their childhood. The biblical Kind Solomon became King of Judah and Israel just at his age of 12. Selassie is the messiah. Whatever that means to any tribe or individual is down to their interpretation. Unlike many other godly movements, we are free to learn and interprete for ourselves. There is no head of this. We are all united through our respect and love for the king and our vision of peace love and unity inspired by him. I have a view not shared by the majority of Rastas i am around but we all respect eachothers views and understand that we are part of the same great movement. For me Selassie I is not jesus but he is christ. The word christ means king so christ the king makes no sense. The great king the jews were waiting for is selassie. There were some misinformation, for example, they showed Emperor Menelik II's photo to represent Ras Makonnen. And they also showed a photo of Ras Makonnnen to represent His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I. I also did not like how some of the folks who were interviewed referred to his Imperial Majesty as the King and with one exception all of the interviewees referred to the Empress Menen as the Queen. I also have read and learned that their lives in Bath was seriously difficult. They lost a grandson, the Emperor and Emperess's eldest daughter's oldest son died from TB. I would also like more documentation of the kidnapping and imprisonment of the Emperor's first daughter (from the previous relationship) and her children. I need to know if anyone has any knowledge of the Empress Menen's other 4 children from 2 of her first 3 marriages. What happened to them and where are they now.
