OMG, in 22 minutes these 2 wonderful people can teach, entertain, and explore. We love their energy, smiles, enthusiasm, and curiousity. Jason does not give himself enough credit. He is an excellent sailor at the helm, on the foredeck, or trimming a sail. No need to ask Jason for help; he is the first on a line, closing a sail bag or even jumping overboard to save the headsets.😊 The headset many asked about. It turns on, connects wirelessly but transmits only static, so essentially one headset needs replacement. That’s life on the salty ocean; back to our hand signals. Thanks for tuning into this adventure on Ticket to Ride and for your comments.

Pretty cool of you Frank - to comment - and be a co-star too. I think Jason and Nikki are going to regret not getting a 55 after being on your boat. I think the 44 will be more bouncy in the waves - causing distress for Jason who's prone to motion sickness.

i will admit I was in the "why do you want a performance boat" school when I first heard about it. Now i understand, it's not so much a performance thing as it is an efficiency thing. Less motoring and more sailing. Makes imminent sense to me. Keep the good stuff coming guys.

Tahanea fun fact: The first recorded European to sight Tahanea was Spanish navigator Domingo de Bonechea on November 9, 1774, who named the atoll "San Julián". Champagne fun fact: According to European law, Champagne can only be called Champagne if bottled within 100 miles of the historical region of Champagne. This has been legally protected thanks to an 1891 treaty called the Madrid System. French sparkling wine made outside Champagne is called Cremant.

It’s such a simple philosophy to adopt. Performance equals enjoyment. Lightweight means you can lift, move & handle things easier. Light weight means you can choose to sail faster and that all means increased safety & passage planning options. I’m such a fan of using racing tech for cruising. Thanks for highlighting this to your viewers.

We sail a Chris White Atlantic 57 cat. Not only do we get the pleasure of light air boat speed at or above wind speed, but the heavy air performance is unbelievable - sail in the high teens and low 20's. Also means we can regularly do 320+ mile jumps in a single overnight, double overnight we have done 550+. Makes it easy to sail as a couple....

Steve Dashew also designed performance monohulls for exact this purpose. He had noted over extensive cruising that most of the times winds are actually very light in many parts of the world. Also in a performance yacht it is faster to escape from bad weather, especially useful on big passages.

I could watch every day that you folks were on TTR- yup, it's a great boat, very powerful & has a sweet set-up to boot. I love the fact that THEY want to go fast, lift a hull maybe, test sails, try new & different combos. It makes very entertaining videos! I'd love it if you would discuss "what to do when overpowered below a beam reach". That is needed to be clear when the wind pipes up with a blooper, a Code sail, etc. The boat can power up based on apparent wind angles & create a tip over situation if not addressed prior to the wind getting up there!!!

Great episode. Not only will a performance boat get you there faster it also gives you more options for avoiding bad weather along the way with a boat that can cover 240+ nautical miles a day. That should allow you to avoid the worst of most storms. When I first got into sailing back in the 80's the theory for an offshore boat was a heavy displacement full keel beast built like a battle ship that could handle bad weather. They had to be since they were so slow they couldn't get out of the way. Off shore cruising has evolved a lot since then. Thanks for the video. Fair winds and following seas. Sail On!
@svliger2 жыл бұрын
Until you actually go out there and realise that is BS because you usually just start slamming into waves so have to reduce sail to slow anyway. This logic only applies to 55ft (usually 60ft) or longer cats that 99% of people can't afford anyway do to average wave gap.

I know you generally don't respond to specific comments but I'd love to hear your analysis about the trade of performance for the security of a slow boat. The presumption is that a high speed performance boat has a higher chance of tipping than a low speed steady boat. Love to hear your perspective if it's useful to your videos. I can't imagine you've not thought of this
@gonewiththewynns2 жыл бұрын
Hey Brian! First off, just about *any* cat can be flipped under the right circumstances with too much sail up in strong winds. If you've been with the channel since Nikki & Jason's Pacific crossing, in one video they talked about "putting Curiosity to bed" at night by reefing the main sail. They did this so that if a squall hit in the middle of the night when one crew member was sleeping, the sail would already be in safer configuration for high winds. As the current vid points out, buying a "performance" boat will indeed let them travel at greater speeds, but that's not the main objective. The main objective is to have a boat that is light enough and that is configured well enough to be able to sail in very light winds, winds that would require Curiosity to start her engines. It's about getting more out of the boat in all conditions. Jason & Nikki are seasoned sailors now and have experience under all conditions, and they know they'll need to be extra cautious if pushing C2 to the edge of her abilities. Hope that helps! Curious Minion

HH are great cats, one of the best and $$$$. My best 3 advises on a fast cat , pay attention pay attention pay attention ... above 6 knots of speed , it is a slow cruising speed but if you or anyone walks around and the boat gets pounded , you can survive it or at least not get killed. This may sound funny , only 3 more knots is a hell of a difference, just test walking 6 knots and increase to 9 knots and hit a wall ... I have seen people flying out of a cat or any boat . Lukily most of the time they were tied . That was a close reach , my best to both of you and again BE SAFER AT LOWER SPEEDS and it is nice to go faster at low winds. Now foils daggerboards are great ... algeas and sand banks ... not if but when you hit them be sure to have a plan B.

Beat me to it: 100% But not just that, it plays into your decision making as well: On a slow boat you may just *choose* to ride out weather because any distance you go off course you now have to come back, which just takes even more time!

I'm trying to binge watch all of your videos from the beginning. Currently I'm on videos that are from 5 years ago when you're getting ready to leave the Bahamas. I grew up in Florida fishing inshore offshore and it's basically the same all through the Caribbean all the way up to mid Florida Northern Florida. Fishing tips 101. When you're trolling for a fish at 468 knots and you hook up with that fish you need to have your drag tight enough so that the hooks penetrates the fish's jaw mouth or lips inside or outside its face or mouth but loose enough so you don't rip that fish out of the water through the air slam it back in the water repeat rinse repeat rinse repeat rinse the same cycle. The fish's mouth when they're long and slender like a kingfish a wahoo a mackerel their mouths are made like paper or plastic bags. Now when you picture this a hook in a paper bag at 678 knots how long do you think that hook is going to stay in its mouth same thing with a plastic bag how long you're going to rip a hole large enough or rip it clean through its jaw or clean through the bag and pull the hook right out of the fish at that speed in and out on top of the water even under the water at that speed you're going to rip a hole in that fish's mouth. Those long fish barracuda wahoo kingfish mackerel they're designed for speed to swim down their prey and eat it cut it in half not even bite it just swim through with its mouth open and physically like razor blades cut it in half like a pair of scissors they're not designed to come up and swallow they're designed to take something in half spin back around and grab the other half sometimes they get it all sometimes they don't their mouth is designed to take the tail off a fish we're at which point it can turn around and eat the rest of its meal. With that said when you're trolling 468 knots have the drag loose enough to keep tension on the fish and keep the hook in the mouth but you don't want it tight enough to start ripping the fish out of the water when you hook that fish immediately bring your boat to a slow as possible as you can and bring the fish to the boat instead of the fish to a boat traveling at four not six knots or eight knots. with all that said seems like many fishermen are stuck on these one hook hard bait hard head with a skirt many skirts can be replaced on these lures as as you know these lures can range from $40 to $125 those big hard head skirted lures single hook they're expensive you don't want to lose one. With that said don't be afraid to try to get into a plug a diving plug something with a set triple treble hooks on it at its chin in the lower at its mid body and coming out the tail all treble hooks stainless steel if possible so they don't rust. Like I said I fished Florida waters my entire life on shore offshore. Most times a smaller treble hook triples your ratio of hooking the fish three times for each individual hook and you've got three of them so now you've got nine active hooks that can hook that fish inside its mouth or outside its face. Remember I said these fish are designed to swim very fast and cut a bait in half sometimes they misjudge that and actually catch the hook in the side of the face and it never makes it in its mouth. So I recommend a slower speed a slower hook set will pay off on these fish that you're hooking offshore most definitely if you're using a 6 to 8 inch diving plug swimming that swims at 4 to 6 knots anywhere from 2 to 4 maybe 6 ft and it under the water with a set three individual treble hooks will increase your odds of catching these fish dramatically. I see that you're using what is standard 4 ought fishing reel with a pole that's really designed to pull fish off the bottom such as grouper sharks or big rays. You're not really using a trolling fishing pole. Today there are many brands of fishing pole and reels some that come in combos. Typically the more you spend the better you get but a nice offshore fishing rod reel combo should run you $400 on average here in Florida and it will be more than suitable to get the job done. A real that holds braided line I prefer the best and you can always tie monofilament on that for 25 or 50 ft for a leader and that tied to a fluorocarbon leader with a short four or six inch 8-in piece of wire in front of your lure very thin wire if you find your own fish that are cutting it off. For example 99 out of 100 kingfishermen that's fishing for kingfish will use a short piece of wire they'll also use off the back of the plug what they call a stinger rig and all that is is a little four or six inch piece of wire with a treble hook back there so when the fish hits short that little stinger hook will get them on the outside of the face. Once you hook this fish like I said you got to slow the boat down to a crawl if you don't all you're doing is pulling that wet paper bag plastic bag jaw up out of the water and plop in 25 lb of it back in the water and in reality how many times do you think this is going to last before you rip a large enough hole in its mouth jaw or right through its bottom lip until the hook comes out? So like I said get a different rod and reel for trolling offshore maybe try braided line with I'm on a filament line tied to a fluorocarbon or braided tide right to fluorocarbon little piece of wire in front of that little plug that's got three individual trouble hooks on it diving 2 to 6 ft deep when you hook up slow down on the boat because of that first hook pulls there could be two sets or if you're using a stinger rig on it three sets of hooks behind it that can grab that fish a second or third time I've seen it happen. I've also wielding fish that's had all three treble hooks and the stinger hook buried inside of it inside its mouth and outside its face. You've got to get the boat to slow down ASAP at that speed when you hook up you need to drag loose enough to hook the fish physically penetrate its mouth but not lift it up clear out of the water and put it back down in the water cuz you're only going to start ripping it up and tearing up its face which is going to enlarging the hole and you're going to rip the hooks right out of its face and you're going to leave a fish swimming in the water that's got half of its jaw skin hanging off where it can't catch fish naturally and it's going to physically die a long painful death of starvation or its lips are going to be ripped in half it happens regardless of how careful you are. The advice I'm giving you is just simple simply for me honest to goodness fishing advice and etiquette and I don't want you to take that the wrong way at all because no means what I want that or do I mean that. At the end of the day you're trying to put fish on the table and if a fish does get off you want it to swim to another boat and get on that one you don't want the fish getting off and dying a long painful agonizing death. When picking out your combo I would recommend for something like your fishing for something 50 to 65 lb test braided line with a 50 lb monofilament 60 lb modem filament maybe 80 tied down to a four to six eight foot piece of fluorocarbon with a little wire and a trolling plug two to four six eight feet maybe at the most under the water with a set of trouble hooks something that dives and wiggles sometimes they have balls in them to make rattling noise. The fish are fishing for our reaction fish they see something cutting through the water they swim up and grab a hold of it and bite it and they want to be the first one to it they don't want to wait by for its brother or Uncle to swim by to eat its meal they're very aggressive they're very fast they're designed for this and I honestly hope this advice helps you in the future I don't know where you're at you could be fishing charters for all I know right now I'm just commenting on one of your latest videos like I said I'm 5 years back trying to catch up. Please if you have any questions comment leave me a comment on this comment I'll do all I can to answer and help you become more successful. By no means am I a charter captain but I have caught plenty of kingfish barracuda wahoo dolphin dolphin like the skirts that's a good dolphin then kingfish wahoo mackerel they like plugs or a skirted bait with a ballyhoo or a natural light bait and to trick them when you do trick them you've got to have enough hooks on that plug light enough pressure to keep them on the line but strong enough pressure to make the hook go through a smile by itself they'll hook themselves you're not having a problem looking fish you're having a problem keeping fish on the hook that's where your problems at and that's the developing from you trying to pull that fish in slapping it across the water and all you're doing is physically ripping the hooks out of its mouth. That's like putting a screw in a piece of plywood and tie in a big rope on it and driving down the road and expecting to make it 4 miles that screw is going to wear out give out tear out break snap come out it's not going to stay put but if you were to tow that same board with that same screw in that same truck going out of snail's pace or as slow as you can that board will make it 15 miles. That is my whole complete opinion theory on the fishing I'm seeing you do from 5 years ago like I said maybe you're a professional now I don't know if not I hope this advice helps you and that the two of you continue making great videos with the great content that I have been watching. I wish the both of you happy holidays Merry Christmas love your channel.

Seems like a great boat . The only part I do not like much is the beds . No way to walk around the bed to make it but then I do not make my bed and prefer to sleep with the covers just all loose so it would be fine for me

I hope you like your new boat as much after your first storm. Fair winds and good sailing.

I just finished watching a nice KZbin video from "The Country Collectors," where they were staying a few days on an anchored single hull sailboat offered off the coast of Baja California on Airbnb! I kept thinking about how quickly you two could get that boat *moving* !

Jason & Nikki, this video is *amazing*! Your explanation of why you are choosing a performance cat over a cruising cat makes perfect sense....that said I think, based on what my wife and I are thinking right now, a cruising cat probably will work best for us when we choose this path....of course, things may change, yes? :-) Thanks for sharing this with us. We've learned so much from watching y'all. Be well. Be safe.

I totally get it. My last 3 boats were trimarans. But the price premium for that performance is more than double an equivalent size Leopard/Fontaine Pajot/Lagoon.
