Another thing this KZbinr forgot to mention is that if you are a citizen and you see a rollover like this you should never remove people from a vehicle not knowing if they have spinal damage or not. It’s best to leave them in the car. The only way you should take them out is if the vehicle is actively on fire.

Head injuries can definitely make you act differently for sure! I fell about 10 feet off a ladder at a fire scene while of course fighting a fire. I'm so sorry that happened to you Brother, I'm retired Capt, Firefighter Paramedic in NC. I'll be praying for you Jonathan. Of all these comments you stood out to me so, thy will be done. Our Brotherhood stands strong, and I'd like to hope that this message gets to you, to say that from one Brother to another I ask that you are lifted up. I myself was injured off duty and medically forced to retire, I understand pain as I ended up having CRPS Type 2 in both legs and feet. And even though I'm retired, I'm always on Duty, be it where I am, or far through here. We are strangers yes, but we are Brothers at the same time. As I said I'll be praying for you, and thank you for your post response. You are most certainly not alone. We see and do things that no one outside of the FD understands, be strong Brother you are not alone, as your brother I say, Be Safe and Be Well, and in case I out rank you, that's an Order!

Sometimes EMT school doesn’t add threats to situation even though it’s our priority for safety on scene. Becoming a paramedic showed me another side of violence. We went through active shooter drills as part of our schooling. It’s crazy how fast someone, a bystander or patient, can get violent. Always get PD on scene if your gut says something is not right prior to patient contact. I also had to learn to see threats. Experience helps a lot but you won’t get any of you get hurt. I was really surprised that one firefighter didn't just clock him in the face when he pulled the knife. Not that I'm saying he should have. Not telling him to put himself in more danger than he signed up for. But still...His stupid face was RIGHT THERE. Is the policy strictly not to get involved? In rural southern illinois my dad had to tackle and/or restrain a few people on accident scenes for their safety or the safety of others because officers might be 40 minutes or more away.

Early on in my firefighter/EMT career, I was on the ambulance for a welfare check/possible overdose. Everything was normal, guy didn't seem to be altered or upset or anything, and we were just taking vitals and all. I sat down on the sofa next to the guy to take BP, and just got the cuff on when with his other hand, he pulled a huge Bowie knife out from under the sofa cushion. Every one of us in the room cleared out so fast. He wasn't even threatening us with it, just holding it, but he wouldn't put it down. That incident escalated to SWAT being called, although they finally talked him down enough to drop the knife without using force, and he took a ride with the cops instead of us. It was a great learning experience to always stay alert, even after you've initially determined the scene is safe. Things can change in a heartbeat, with no warning.

One thing that was stressed a lot in my fire school which definitely needs more attention is noting the position of the vehicle. I am so glad I’m retired and wish those coming after me all the best. Surprisingly crime rates were actually the highest in us history in the 80s and it was technology advancements that led to crime getting lower but in the last 2 years theres been a huge crime increase from what it was before than! With phones and DNA evidence it's hard for anyone to get away with violent crimes anymore! I've seen since like 2016 a big change happened where crimes started getting more common in Democrat cities and than by 2020 Democrat cities are so crime ridden it's pretty much just asking for something to happen to live in those big Democrat citys! According to FBI crime statistics you can see a super sharp steady decline since 1980 that tapers off in the 2000s and become more flat by the 2010s but still mildly going down and its acctually still going down even past 2016 but theres a sharp little spike since the "summer of love"

I've worked all three sided. Police, Fire, and EMS. Been an instructor for all three also. In all the time I worked I lived by the mantra that I was taught early on. "If you are not checking for scene safety every third thing you do, you're doing it wrong." Scene safety is not something that we have to check for just once. It has to constantly be reevaluated. The conditions on any incident scene, be it police, fire, or EMS can change rapidly. Changing everything from the level of safety of personnel on scene to the tactics or assets needed to deal with the situation.

Brain injuries are no joke, I was combative and it took multiple friends and nurses to hold me down when I cracked my head open on a corner on a boat while boating (we hit a piece of raised bed in the middle of a river and I went flying) Being unaware of what was going on i was combative until a nurse held my hand and calmed me down in the hospital going through a scan

As a retired company officer, I never tolerated emotions of anger at a scene and made it clear to people envolved. As soon as he hit the car he would have been removed from the operational scene. On occasion removing a member or myself to TAKE A DEEP breath and regroup when dealing with very difficult people. It was also almost routine to ask and when possible to check for weapons. I did work with a fantastic group though that had each other's back.

I’m sure we will run a lot and cardio isn’t my biggest strength so If you have any idea of how long the runs are that would be helpful.

Honestly it depends.for example If someone breaks the rules or forgets to follow them after the first week you guys could be running every day at whatever time in student uniform at random for however long depending on how many other people did the same thing which can go on for months so prepare for a lot of running in uncomfortable gear for something you probably didn't do. This is of course something I did in my training but it might be different for yours. We also started the week with about 1 or 3 miles and at the end progressed to several while simultaneously making the exercises harder. In summation best not to ask how much just know it will be a lot and everyday.

Yes he's right. Weighted vest training is most effective when you mimic the exercises they have you do wearing it at all times. I will advise you that they will have you push your limits every day. So stay hydrated at all times and don't expect to take breaks. The idea is that they want you in the best shape of your entire life, good luck.

They're all right, the mentality they want to build in you is the same as military. It's not just about you anymore, it's about everyone. So they'll be very petty with you, and if one person messes up, the whole team gets punished. They'll make you do anything from pushups to runs, so if you haven't already, start getting into running. Become a regular runner, your legs will thank you, and you are going to be very uncomfortable. Besides vest running, if you have one, grab a big military backpack (or any bag) fill it with old clothes and boots and ruck. Rucking is just walking, just to get used to the weight. Then over time start running, and keep running. Just get used to running lol, it goes along way with other exercises than ppl realize. Good Luck! C:

Having started out as a firefighter/EMT I later switched careers to become a cop and I was blessed to work in departments where we always were watching out for each other. I see it as my job, once the guys in the big red trucks arrive, to protect them on the scene so they can do their work. That starts with traffic safety and ends, like here, with handling erratic and very dangerous behavior by someone on the scene. First thing I always do is communicate with the FD officer and find out what he/she needs to be done. It helped that I worked out of a precinct house which also housed a fire station. We knew each other and we felt we all belong to one family.

I don't remember much after the accident, and a good friend of mine.. who use to be a firefighter.. helped fill in the blanks as he was one of the 1st on scene. I was very disoriented and somewhat aggressive, but he somehow managed to keep me calm till an ambulance arrived. But even after all these years later, i suffer from severe headaches, experience painful rings in my left ear, and have memory problems as well. Head injuries are no joke, and they absolutely suck!

I started out just fire rescue, then went into law enforcement. We have 3 of us on my department that are also Leo's as well as emt's. I really wish more departments nation wide would cross train and be certified in other areas of first response. As an EMT you learn a little bit more patience. Fire has taught me how to react more quickly as well as be more forceful when needed and having a combination of training allows me to kind of change hats in any situation and be more adaptable and we are also now mandated to go through training that involves mental health dealing with everything from standard MR to bipolar schizophrenic. Then working as a Leo I find my self being the voice of reason sometimes between suspects and other officers that don't go get the extra training. Unless it is an immediate threat that has to be stopped or put down then I will always try to deescalate the situation as best I can. The goal is everyone gets to go home at the end of the day but if you make me choose between seeing my kids grow up or ending your existence on this planet I will chose my kids every time.

As an EMT I was trained to leave the situation immediately and call for police if there was a weapon. In SRT (swiftwater rescue) we train with the expectation that victims will act aggressively. BJJ really helps, but if there's a weapon it's best to get away and call for police. Between the likelihood of injury and legal liability it's better to just let PD handle it.

First responders always do their best for them and better if not threatened. And in this clip the man with knife had so many chances and so much time to consider the outcome and be thinking straight he knew exactly what he was doing. Sad

I am not a cop or an EMT. I was an over the road truckdriver when an incident happened in front of me as I was traveling south on I-65 in Tennessee about 20 years ago. It was about 3 AM in the morning and a small compact car passed me at a high rate of speed. (Cell Phones were none existent back than). Anyway after he passed me he swerved back over to the right lane, hit the edge of the shoulder & tried to correct back to the left but lost control & barrel rolled at least 5 times that I counted before landing on it's wheels & crashing into the right hand ditch. I pulled up behind the car & got out to check on driver, who was throw out of the car during the barrel rolls. By the time I got over towards the car he came walking up out of the ditch where he had landed. I never seen him thrown out of the car during the wreck, but assumed he was thrown out because I never seen hm get out of the car. He was pissed off & right away accused me of cutting him off. He than turn his attention to his buddy who was still in the car. What I seen was a guy passed out with a large gashing cut on the top of his head. He was bleeding bad. I got some rags from the back seat of their car to apply pressure to try & stop the bleeding. The driver was like help me get him out, we got to get out of here. He was trying to pulled the guy thru the windshield by his foot while I was trying to stop the bleeding. By this time another trucker had stopped & came over to help out. The driver of the car started going bunkers & pulled out a large Bowie Knife & starts chasing the other trucker around the car. By this time an ambulance had stopped but the crew was still sitting in the ambulance. I ran over to the ambulance & told them about the injured guy in the car, & the guy with the knife. The medic told my to just back in my truck for safety & lock the doors, that he cops would handle it from here. It took another 10 minutes for the first trooper to show up & the guy with the knife ran up into the woods. The cops got a dog up in there & hunted the down. His buddy died there in the car, waiting for help. The car turned up being stolen. I was called up & showed for a few court dates, but never found out what happened with the driver.

The how many people in the vehicle question is really important. You mentioned the people being thrown from the car scenarios and that can be scary. We responded in the middle of the night to a car that left a parkway and wrapped around a tree splitting the car in half with the engine flying way back into the woods to give an idea how fast this car was traveling. It appeared to be a single occupant accident, the driver died on impact but during our extrication, we all noticed a child seat in the back seat that was undone but still strapped in. As you can imagine this led to an exhaustive search of the woods and surrounding area in hopes we didn't actually find a young child possibly deceased. Luckily that was the case, and the driver was truly by themself after searching using IR and heat signature detecting equipment. It's always wise with rollovers especially to be cognizant of the potential for thrown passengers.

That's how you put down a fool while evaluating their actions. I noticed that this wasn't the first time he'd screamed at his wife, and based on the fact that he already had a pocket knife on him, I can't imagine if this was the first time he'd threatened someone in that manner. Although I agree that some of this behavior was reasonable, the whole attacking people with a knife didn't make sense. Anyone can go on and argue about it, but I have been in numerous accidents and have never reached into my pockets to retrieve whatever was in them. To me, it appears that he wasn't mentally unstable; rather, he just didn't want to pay for the mistakes he made as a result of his anger. Everyone blamed him for what transpired, and he even went as far as to incriminate himself by saying, "I was doing OK until he started teasing me by sticking out his middle finger." Despite the fact that these are mere speculations, one can only imagine what actually happened.

as an EMS, I luckily have always by psych-driving a police in the ambulance. sometimes we both (driver + me) sit at the front, patient and police alone at the back. my co-worker or me always look back to notice, if the patient gets wild. if something happens, my partner kicks the brakes. usual the patient falls for, maybe knocking out and we and the police usual have time to get out. after that: locking the door and wait for the second police to arrive or even with future police strength and if I should be maybe alone their, it works. similiar. if I should notice it, I can scream, so he kicks the brakes too, enough time to jump out, close the door and lock it in generell at psych emergencies, their is usual quickly the police around, or in severe stuff as police usual prepare the helicopter, but I never really thought to check for safety, if it's just a small thing luckily, I didn't got into a car accident yet or only once, but that was as a reinforcement. a other EMS troup already cleared the situation and needed to help to treat the patients

@@buckberthod5007 We actually had that happen!🤣 It was a combative patient, and during the struggle, he knocked an O2 tank loose, as we were turning left. It slid out of a compartment that he opened and whacked him in the head. One patient we had was working on a big lugie, so he could spit on one of us. Kenny had been watching, and just as the guy goes to spit, Kenny wipes his face with a towel, smearing it all over his face. Great timing!
