This Is Why You Don't Take a Guided Tour of Antelope Canyon

We're do it yourself people, so if there's a chance to skip a guided tour, we'll take it! Kayaking into the lower section of Antelope Canyon allows you to experience Lake Powell as well as the stunning canyon we all know and love from Google backgrounds. It's a 2 for 1 experience for only $50!
Kayaking directions: The "put in" is Antelope Point Marina, about 10min from Page. If you don't have an America the Beautiful pass, entry to the marina costs $30. Once you leave the boat ramp, take a left and kayak for about 30min until you see a large opening on your left. Turn left into the opening and kayak about 30 more minutes until you can pull your kayak up on dry land.
We had a great experience with WazSUP kayaks! They drop off and pick up the kayaks for you at the bottom of the boat ramp. The whole day is only $50! You could SUP but the waves from boats and jet skis can be intense. Book here ($50 for the day): wazsupkayaks.c...
America the Beautiful Pass ($80): tinyurl.com/38...
To experience the Antelope Canyon you've seen in stock photos, you'll need to take an official Navajo guided tour of the upper part of the canyon. Most tours are $60+ and book out in high season/weekends

We are also Do It Yourself people - thanks for the recommendation for the kayak company. The mud is sooo gross but the water looks incredible and clear!

Respect the Navajo nation. This is not just your fun little vacation spot, this is THEIR sacred land. Native Americans in America have had enough stolen from them and their land has been damaged in many irreconcilable ways. They don’t want people going on unguided tours for a reason. If you want to appreciate the land, honor those who care for it and do things the right way by getting proper permits and tours approved by the Navajo people. It’s not just there for your fun little experience and so you can do whatever you want however you want it, there are generations of people who have to fight every day for it. It only looks this way because of the Navajo who have preserved it. Respect them and their rules, support them and their continued ownership of their land by funding the tribe’s approved and regulated tourism of these sights, same for all tribal communities in AZ and any other tribal land you wish to visit across the US.

The part of the canyon that we explored is not in Navajo land. The canyon is very long and most of it is in Navajo land, requiring a tour to explore. Don’t worry, the guided tours sell out daily and the Navajo guides have an unlimited supply of tourists!

@@travelsfromyesterday no, actually, it is all Navajo land. Just because the US gov has stolen portions of it and deemed it otherwise doesn’t change that. Everywhere you explored belonged to people long before the US gov pushed them out, just because it’s stolen and their borders have been forcibly diminished doesn’t mean it’s not theirs, like I said there are generations fighting for it every day and fighting to maintain what is left in their jurisdiction (which they are still being pushed out of and/or killed on). I’ve spoken personally with the Navajo and they’ve lost massive amounts of land due to uranium mining and other U.S. gov projects that “coincidentally” poison or displace the native people (they’re still doing it today, look up the current situation with the havasupai tribe and their haul no movement, which also includes the Navajo). It is all native land, if you want to visit support the natives-point blank period. “Don’t worry, the guided tours sell out daily and te Navajo guides have an unlimited supply of tourists!” Its more than tourism, people like you want free reign to the land and don’t support the native tribes making it more difficult for them to gain support and stop the continued genocide of their people. Do some research before encouraging people to impose on native lands for your own “good fun”, there’s a lot of innocent people dying but all you people care about is the pretty water and rocks with no support of the people who are being killed for it.

@@user87953 All US land is stolen land! Why not enjoy an area of nature? The Navajo don't offer a kayaking tour and I like kayaking but I'll probably do the guided tour too xx

@@user87953 Quite frankly, the National Park Service takes better care than of the land than more tribal governments do. Hiking Havasupai was a bummer because the village was a garbage heap. The campgrounds weren't much better. Did that propably before you were born. I've travelled all over the US and the people that live in rural areas tend to treat it as a garbage dump. That includes my hillbilly cousins. So, don't go all high and mighty on the young guy. I'll give him credit for taking the path less travelled. Do it while you're young kids and save the guided tours for when you get old.
