I don't want to sound negative but everything will end up in landfill eventually. I think it's important to keep things in use and out of landfill for as long as possible. I support charity shops and Freecycle groups. This helps financially and with sustainability too. My daughter and I were recently flowergirl and bridesmaid. I've already donated the dresses. Hopefully, someone will be delighted to discover dresses that are still being sold. In the past, I would have waited years before decluttering them.

My local Facebook recycling group is SO great for avoiding trashing stuff. It's such a great way to directly match up with someone who wants something you no longer have use for. And it works in return. When our microwave gave up on me, someone on the recycling group offered me one they were getting rid of and I didn't need to buy new! Great🎉!

The place I had to start at was relational clutter. I guess it’s why I eventually wound up here. Learning all about minimalism. Extreme relational clutter (narcissism, abuse, toxic family) can wreck and stall you in all areas. That to me is number one along with my own mental work…which for sure are kind of intertwined Bcuz these folks can very much keep you mentally and emotionally spinning, spent and exhausted or even injured and broken and never getting anywhere. You have to consider just how much time or energy is wasted on having to stop and tend to injuries. Best to just remove them and not be further injured. Last thing anyone needs is death by a thousand little cuts. As far as temporal stuff, what I do is make “me time” a distinct mark on my proverbial calendar or schedule. I flip the script on “to do” and put myself first along with any bare bones “must” items. There are times also that I kind of intermingle my little must do things with “me” breaks in between. Bottom line is that nobody is going to be looking after you like that but you. If you don’t prioritize yourself (rest, nourishment, fun, self care etc) it isn’t likely to ever happen and then comes burnout and grueling monotony that never seems to end. So really fun time, mental break time etc is a thing I consider as important as daily feeding my animals etc. I don’t just try to squeeze “me” in when I can (like I used to). I mark “‘me” in like it’s a MUST daily. Plus if you really sit down and give it a good think, you’ll soon realize that anything you do for others will not benefit them at some point if you wind up sick or spent or crashing and burning. At that point you’ll see that taking good care of you is a very real necessity. I won’t be any good to anybody else if I’m wiped out or half dead from serving others. Plus truly the needs of people is never ending. We often can’t afford to base what we do for anyone on their needs. I now base it on my own capacity and limitations. One simple question really just is “Can I really afford this…energy and time wise or not if I say yes to it?” And so now it’s like I think always “no”…unless I can afford any “exceptions” instead of thinking always “yes” if possible. It’s not “selfish.” It’s self preservation. Honestly tho, private tell offs CAN be a good thing tho. I sometimes have to do that to be able to move on. I take it more like a deliberate act tho, like getting some closure and then I mentally burn it and drop it Bcuz once they finally get “told” I’m done with them. Lol. Some folks are impossible to say your piece with in real time so next best thing is just letting it rip privately Imo. Just don’t go back and pick it up again more than you really need to. Lol. The only litmus test with that really is rant until you feel satisfied. I think really it’s more or less a need to feel or see at least SOME kind of justice being done. I think it’s good actually. How we can stand up for ourselves in some way when we could not do that before and when nobody else would stand up for us or with us when we were unjustly hurt or wronged. And it’s really just a crying shame how some folks continually get away with murder just running around forever treating others like crap. Hurting them and doing damage. I don’t think it’s cool and I think if the only way they can be held accountable is in our own heads, then just go ahead and call them to the carpet there if you have to. Sometimes it’s the only justice we’ll ever get to see. And we need to have some sense of justice in our lives Imo. And truly imo it’s why surviving victims of violent crimes get to make impact statements. This imo is about the same thing, only the “court” is in our own heads and hearts. And if anyone wants to get biblical with it, there’s a good reason Jesus said, “If your brother offends you, REBUKE him.” I take that as a thing that is needed to be able to flush out things properly. “Forgiveness “ is the caboose and you have to know what exactly needs forgiving BEFORE you try to do it. And even if you do forgive, reconciliation with some folks is just not possible. Well ok. I think I wrote a book. But I def have learned a lot over the years when it comes to conflict, offense and abuse recovery.

I battle the need to keep items but I also keep working on minimizing/ decluttering for the simple fact that I have a terrible back. The more I have to move, rearrange, pull and push items the less likely to get done. It makes cleaning easier, takes less time away from other things as well.

Back in the 90s I was a bridesmaid in a wedding where my friend had the dresses made. I had to go to several fittings, the dress was expensive, and imo the ugliest dress I’d ever seen. I hated it so much, yet I kept it and hauled it around for several years. (I think it was at a time the mindset of mine was to hang on to things.) The lightbulb moment to donate was a freeing experience when I finally got rid of it. I loved when Declutter challenges and info started becoming more common into the mainstream because I’d always enjoyed organizing and decluttering on some level. Thanks for the video! I ruminate too and it’s so important not to let mental clutter bog you down.

Highly informative presentation. I would like to say that it is important to honour all feelings whether it is happiness or sorrow. It's OK to be sad when sad things happen, to be angry when there has been an injustice, to be frightened when there is a threat. The children's movie, Inside Out, is fantastic for the above reason. I think the pressure is to 'move on' quickly from a devastating event and that is what jeopardises mental and emotional health. On the other hand, the expectation to always be happy or find happiness is also unrealistic. Happiness comes in bursts. It is contentment that is longer lasting and where gratitude and appreciation are the threads.

With the sustainable one, I plan to move o/s and just take a couple of suitcases at the most. Any time I'm about to purchase something, it must have a purpose and a destination. Will I take this with me? If not, who will it go to? Can I avoid buying this entirely? It makes buying things a lot easier, but also, not buying things and walking out of a store with no guilt. I do more research online and pausing before buying things.

Tip: When you saved youtube video for some reason and dont have time to watch it again 1.) look for summary in comments 2) if there is no summary ask ChatGPT about the topic video seems to be about (for example if the video is about XYZ giving tips for longerivty you ask chatGPT about XYZ's tips for longevity) 3.) if you found something profound put it your knowledge management system (if you dont have any then A) learn about them and start one (its as easy as signing up for evernote and eventually figure out some system there) B) delete all those bookmarked videos)
