Lara, this is profound! I’m 70, live alone, and consistently overwhelmed with ‘so much needs doing’. I used to use a planner to document the tasks I accomplished that day. I realized - to whom did I think I had to prove I wasn’t lazy?!? Today you’ve inspired me to start with unsubbing emails. I routinely do that, but more show up uninvited and I think, oh that looks interesting, I’ll read that LATER. But I don’t. It’s time to get real about which ones I truly want and have energy to read. Thank you for sharing this wisdom. 🤗

This is good work on your part and I appreciate your sharing it. I was your age 30 years ago and I remember the "mid-life" feelings of depression, etc., that hit me then. They're real. But at that time I had no life perspective and absolutely no idea how lucky I was. This is a good time for you to reinvent yourself and we can all do that no matter our ages. However, the older you get, you don't have as much freedom, so I would love for you to realize how very lucky you are. Older people are stuck with things we cannot change, no matter how much we would like to. Many older people are dealing with chronic pain, increased deafness, maybe cancer or some other horrible disease, maybe the dementia of a spouse or the loss of a spouse, etc. I know turning 40 is rough, but you are still so very young. Enjoy this time!

I enjoy all your content but this topped the cake! I’ve learned that a lot of my systems aren’t working, my “to do” list is too long, and I lose the drive for goals I want to accomplish. This video really helped me evaluate myself and a better way that is more realistic. I remember you posted a video last November about having December as a trial run for New Year’s. I’m going to give it a try and incorporate your guidance from this video. Thank you! Wishing you peace and joy! 😊

Laura - this is the video I needed to see. I too have had a year clouded by depression and health issues, and having to pull out of all sorts of projects and plans for the year. I have been saying similar things to my clients (I am a career coach) for years, and have even written a program about creating your ideal working life - based on designing it based on your values, what you love doing, giving yourself space to grow. So I resonate with so much that you have said and recommend, especially about TO DO lists. May the end of the year be peaceful, calm, loving and fun - for all of us.

This is great advice, and exactly what I have been searching for! I really feel a pull to restart my life again as I am also in my 40's now, and I am struggling to find my happiness. Not having any children, something feels like it is missing, but I haven't been able to figure out what that is.

I have been following you for many years on YT, but oh my, I LOVE this shake up! Funnily enough, I totally relate to your journey and I am at the point of creating that new version of myself. I am 42 and have been anxious in some way or another for a very long time. The birth of my son 16 months ago made it a lot worse. And now, I feel like I am at neutral level after being very very down. For the first time in years I really feel that the restlessness isn't working at all. I am safe being relaxed and I am allowed and able to enjoy life as it is. Living from the heart. Thank you for sharing and being yourself Laura! ❤

Fantastic video. I have been feeling stuck and unmotivated for a while. Dreading every day by thinking I’m so far behind. Ironically most of my todos are self made. I’m retired and can spend my day as I please. Yet I felt guilty if I took time to do what I enjoy doing and stressed if I did what I felt I “should” be doing. It’s time to reevaluate, rethink and try something different. I watched this video and my ears pricked up. My mind screamed exactly, this is what you need. Thank you for going through your thought process in changing your life. I appreciate the guidance.

Dear Lara, I really needed this information!! I'm 71 will be 72 in Feb 2025 (in 2 months - Yikes) My only child is my 44 year old Son, who does help when he has time, bless him! I now live with a few aches and pains, never thought of this happening about 4 years ago There's no way I expect my son to 'be my carer' he has his own life to live !! He is a serious minimalist, has a great job and no children (yet) I live alone in a good size apartment, however I'm so very aware of 'my clutter' and I've been stuck for way to long! When my Son is here it drives him crazy and he just wants to throw out so much, which I understand. I get nowhere by myself! I live in Melbourne, Australia. I waiting for some 'home- help' , but they will only do a little, which I can mostly do myself Unfortunately, as I'm on an aged pension I regret I can't afford very much.

There are so many "shoulds" and "aught to's" but a lot dont really serve a purpose. One thing I found useful was asking myself "Where is this should coming from?" A lot of time I realized it was coming from me and I could just drop it.

Wow we must be on the same wavelength Laura! I did the same thing at the beginning of the year. I cut out all busy work type stuff from my to do list. For me, no more than three important things on my to do list for the day. Also I can't emphasize enough how slowing down makes life so much more enjoyable. Even unlikable tasks become calm and more easy to get done. Bonus: got rid of my smart watch. I realized it was making me feel bad at the end of the day when I didn't meet my steps, activity and sleep goals even though I had and otherwise productive and successful day. Up yours smartwatch! 😁

So interesting and so pleased it’s working for you, hooray! I have a couple of questions, do you still do the weekly / monthly etc resets that were mostly household chores type things? Then also, how do you deal with silent to do list stuff? I have so many things that every time I walk into a room, I’m like, oh I need to do that. Too many to just get them all done so I try and add them to a list but they still seem to stay in my head also, it’s very annoying 😄 I am slowly getting thru them. Thanks for sharing 😊
@HowToGYST
@HowToGYST 2 ай бұрын
Great questions! Yes, I still do my resets. Those have been hugely beneficial for me so the decision was made that they would stay. I did, however, edit them a bit to add or remove things. So they got a little upgrade. For silent to-do list stuff I have to say I'm barely noticing it anymore. A lot of it I've slowly chipped away at over the past year or so. It sounds incredibly cheesy but I've found this inner peace where if I see something that needs doing, I just know and accept that I'll get around to it at some stage. If it's a priority, I try do it that day or schedule it for later in the week, or the following week. Otherwise I just trust that its day will come.

@ wow, I’m very impressed with the approach to the silent to do list! It seems like a beautiful balance of having structure with the resets and the letting go of the to do’s. Sounds amazing, you are my inspiration 😁

Saturdays are always about doing whatever I please. I see where the mood takes me. Usually a bit of reading. And then Sundays are my reset days, so laundry, backing up devices, watering plants, etc. I do follow a list for that but I feel like, at this stage, I'd remember most of the list without looking at it so I'd just chip away at that. 🙂

Does the painting above the bed bring joy? I’m just asking because, to me, it looks depressing. I understand everyone is different, so I’m just wondering. Are you trying to have less color in that room? I have heard that getting rid of color can help with sleep, so I’m just wondering if you have found that to be true. Also, your office is so colorful, so I’m just curious about the stark difference and assuming it’s a “ rev up” room vs. sleep room?
