We used to use these at FDOT. We use to mow the sides of the embankments. Of course, it was mounted on a certain type of tractor. Now show them how to change the blades. I remember having to help one of the guys that ran flail mower change his blades one day. I’ll stick to my batwing style of mower.

I had a Flail mower on my 9-N Ford tractor. It was much, much bigger than yours, but it sure did work good. Had to switch out the many blades every so often and resharpen. Had it for many years.

I've used a flail mower cutting road side ditches. Nothing like getting caught up in some wire or a hidden roll of fencing somebody had dumped. The blades can be tedious to replace but it will definitely cut anything from short grass to tall grass with ease. It can also do some light bush hogging.

I used a flail mower back in the 80’s but it wasn’t pto driven. It was a self propelled model with its own engine and it had a hopper. If I remember correctly it was made by Olathe. We used it to cut grass, dethatch, pickup debris, leaves whatever all in one cool swoop.

Tho for me right now ventrac takes the win but that is because it is too wet and tractor not needed. Pros tractor Easy to use (for me atleast) Great resualt. Can get close to water. Cons Leaves marks on wet ground Takes some time to attach to tractor Ventrac Pros No marks Strong Quick Can be attached with 8 wheels instead of 4 Does nearly never get stuck. Cons Not supereasy to learn

I have a 24HP tractor with a 5ft flail mower and it's astonishing what I can do. It cuts and chews through small trees and shrubs, making a pile of branches disappear and is quieter than a push mower plus it doesn't throw projectiles out. That's right, I mow right by my Lexus. Not much worry about a few stumps or stones poking out either, the blades bounce on them... And It's just a small 24HP tractor, best attachment for my summer field maintenance.

Skeptical, because I’ve had one... They take considerably more power, unless you sacrifice ground speed. Also, no mention of maintenance. The cost of servicing the flails is much higher along with the time required. Finish mowing? By their design, they rip the blades and stems. They definitely have their place, but for anyone concerned with the health of their turf. They’re a pretty crude option.

Flail motors are amazing. But in that video I see the guy to low and clip the dirt. NO NOT LET IT HIT THE DIRT. It fills the flails and then it doesn’t cut straight and it mangles your yard. And switching flails isn’t cheap or easy. Also don’t let them hit gravel or tree stumps. Raise them a bit on uneven ground so they never hit the dirt or gravel and they will work great for years. We have a massive one for our 4x4 that can angle so you can cut the ditch but it adds more flails to clear the dirt and the angles sometimes shave a lil high spots but after all these years the yard is level and it cost me a lot of time fixing flails and sharpening triangles.
