You know one of things that has worked for me - be honest about what you can do, or what you’ve done to prove yourself in the past. Be 100% honest with yourself on all of that BEFORE you have that conversation in an interview. Also, be up front on what your shortcomings may be, why, and how you think you can learn and improve on those things. Not everybody is a “perfect” candidate. You yourself may not believe you have all the experience necessary to meet the “job requirements.” Nobody ever does, but you should know where you fall short. Also, and I truly believe it, leadership positions are more about assisting others and lifting them up than it is giving commands, or being the “boss man.” Of course you have set tasks, goals, paperwork, etc etc that must be done - that’s cut and dry. It’s how you act, how you treat, and how you help folks that determines your own success and the success of those you work with.

Hi, 1SG, I have been following you for over a year now. I went to the E-6 board today, and I was denied my P status because I’m just 8 months time in grade and don’t have NCOER yet. Is this is Valid reason?

I would have to assume (and hope) there is more to the story. I was at the P Board for SSG at 6 months, and pinned before 12 months - so I never had an NCOER as a SGT. I would recommend having a formal counseling with your rater/sponsor to outline exactly why you were not selected and what the way forward is. Ask pointed questions without being disrespectful but make sure it’s all documented.

@@BillStoker Thanks for the feedback 1SG. The CSM was absent, and a CPT replaced him, and that was the CPT response to me that I have not yet gotten NCOER, and he doesn’t think I have the experience yet.

You can show yourself working hard busting your ass after learning for years in the same company. It depends on who your boss is. I can tell you that I have been put into a position where my guys respected me honestly and it came down to one warehouse manager from 2. And they gave it to the guy I trained. Why??? Because he ran a warehouse like me AFTER he was trained but had the salary title. I've been at this company now for 27 years. My title taken away but now group leader but paid hourly and now feeling fine with that. You know why?? I make overtime and gained a great raise after that I never would have recieved.
