This is why I think your first car should be a motorcycle. Yes, there are drawbacks to having a motorcycle only but the wins are huge. Car insurance can be astronomically expensive, car maintenance is expensive and if you're on a very tight budget it can be hard to find something that gets halfway decent gas mileage. With motorcycles you don't even have to pay insurance but if you do its very affordable (for most bikes) and your dollar goes WAY further on a motorcycle than it does a car. I think young people should take note of what the rest of the world does and look at a motorcycle as their first mode of transportation instead of a car. Till next time weirdos. #shadetreearmy

I insure a Harley. 108 dollars a year. 05 wide glide. 97 Dodge Ram. 178 a month. Not a dually, not a hot rod. Insurance will pay 1500 bucks for the truck. In about 10 months the insurance was 2 grand.

Dude, thank you for this video! It breaks down perfectly what I’ve been trying to explain to people for years. I rode a $900 Honda nighthawk 650 daily for three years. I even rode in the snow every winter. I also recently sustained multiple broken bones and lost my new cb500x due to getting knocked off my bike while splitting lanes. Nobody understands why I still ride. They just don’t get it. You do tho! Keep it up big guy!

I find when I'm riding, I am more aware of what is going on around me. There are way less distractions such as phones, radios, other people and all of the technology shit that's supposed to make things safer. I also find that your visibility is way better than in a car. I wish I could ride all year round but Canada doesn't let me.

My first "Bike" was a Sears Allstate Moped my Dad dragged home for me. He pulled out of a dumpster. I had it going 2 hours later. When I turned 14 and could get a Motorized Cycle License I had a Yamaha Twin Jet 100 ready to go. When I turned 16 and no longer had a restricted motor driven cycle license I had a Kawasaki 500cc triple 2 cycle bike I had rebuilt and ready to go. I never owned a car up to then, and never wanted one. Over the years I've owned all kind's of bikes and all kind's of vehicle's but mostly trucks to help out with buying, selling, and trading motorcycles. My Wife never liked my motorcycle life but put up with it. When I retired she informed me that because my retirement money would be cut back I needed to get down to one vehicle. She was attempting to get me to sell my bike. 2 week's later she was stunned to find I had sold the truck. First thing she asked was "what are you going to do if it rains?" I responded that if it was really bad I could stay home because I'm retired. Then I said, think about it. No more truck payments, no more truck insurance, my bike cost $1,200 plus $300 in parts to repair, and insurance is $50 a year. She gave me a weird look and stormed off. After a few hours she had calmed down and admitted I was right. Then she traded in her car and got a truck because of all the things that needed done that I could do now that I'm retired.

You are so right when it comes to finding the right dealership. Last year I stopped at a dealership because one of their used bikes (Super Tenere Dad Jeans for $7000). I spent 15 minutes just trying to get someone to talk to me. I gave up. They were more interested in talking to each other than talking to me. A week later I picked up what is basically the same bike for the same price from another dealership which was more than happy to help me.

When I was 19 and working a minimum wage job in CA, my only transportation was a Suzuki Katana 750. I even rode it in snow once. But now that I can afford to have a car and a bike, I use the car for groceries or to avoid dust storms and ride the bike the rest of the time. Even doing that, I still save money on maintenance and gas. Great video!

Baldy 613 actually I just took the MSF class and went through the Harley Davidson riding academy and everyone in my class was in the mid twenties and younger I felt like a tribal elder and they kept asking me questions and I was like hey! I'm 46 years old never road a day in my life, always wanted to but I don't want this to be a bucket list item that probably never gets addressed because my Mom and Dad both died in 2016 5weeks apart and my mom prior to meeting my dad road in her twenties she always tried to encourage me when I was older to try it because I could even have a dirt bike as a kid we were so poor coming up.But she was a free spirited woman and I was a free spirit musician so this was a bond we shared that I want to continue. I digress Harley at least in the Northern part of the U.S. where I live is gaining traction in the market.

Michael RedCrow I owe it to all riders beginning like myself to be honest with myself and with others. I did the 1st day in the classroom and the second day on the range about 2hrs.45min. into I was so winded and exhausted we had to walk the bikes multiple repeated times up an incline the same incline you use to establish the friction zone..... forward and roll back exercise. What was killing me was straddling the bike engine off and repeatedly Fred Flintstoning the bike up and down the hill. I make no excuses for myself I am easily a hundred pounds over weight and I was honest I stopped and spoke to the instructor and withdrew from the class. I will return in sixty days I left the course. I drove away with my tail between my legs. But on my way I ended the pitty party JOINED A GYM AND STARTED STRETCHING AND DOING CARDIO THAT SAME EVENING. Stopped making excuses it's true YOU MUST BE in Riding Shape. My local Harley Davidson Dealer has been totally supportive of my decision I told them I don't want a refund I want to finish and they were ok with me coming back as long as I do it this season . My fellow classmates were awesome I'm 46 and I was the rookie 0 riding experience and yet they were all encouraging me and rallying around me and the one Girl in my class looked like she wanted to cry when I said I don't want to risk my safety or you guys safety not being ready.

SO FUCKING TRUE about safety. The dangerous drivers can be spotted from distance most of the time, and a seasoned biker can tell what bad move they will do even before they think about doing that. Riding patient and paying attention on your surroundings can make riding a lot safer.

We worked out a 'special circumstances', so I could take his class twice and rebuilt the bike from the frame up throughout the entire school year in time for summer. My two cents, form The Netherlands. Keeping in mind I'm an older guy (nearing 50) and only got my license (obligatory) in 2010: so far I've only owned two bikes, both the first and the current a 1984 Honda VF750F. I bought the first for €600, put around 30 or 40000 km's on it and ruined the engine at around 90.000 km. I bought the second for €400, not running. Fixed it up IN THE SHOP TO TEST DRIVE IT! Took me about an hour. They brought it from the other side of the country to me (ok it's a small country, I know). Kept all the parts except the frame of the first bike, for spares. Put around 50000 km on the current bike. It's now at 107000 km. It's a Honda. Maintenance is easy. Fuel economy could be better, but V4's apparently always consume a bit more. Insurance: €107,40 per YEAR. That's with collectivity discount and not crashing discount (probably another name for that in English). I was able to get a full Krauser set of hard luggage for this bike for almost no money. It is dirt cheap. Also, riding a motorcycle full time will in the end make you a better driver on any vehicle, because you learn to drive defensively and anticipate other peoples mistakes. Or you die.

Rode that sucker 23k miles and it never left me stranded. Traded for an R6, which i loved, but cost me 3 times the insurance for a third of the coverage. Way too expensive. Sold it. Lucked across a 2013 Triumph Street Triple R. THREE MUTHAFUCKIN GRAND. Low Milage. Full coverage insurance for less than shit coverage with my R6. I own 2 motorcycles. A 2008 Kawasaki KLR650 and a 2006 Triumph Sprint St 1050. Both bikes with full coverage costs $367 a year. Gas every 150-200 miles varies from $5-12. Oil changes and coolant changes are around $40 DIY of course. Its a no brainer, I bought the KLR in 2015 with 900 miles on it for $3,600 and the Sprint in 2017 had around 4,000 miles and paid $2,800 for it. Craigslist or Facebook marketplace is where the deals are at. And if your willing to do the basic maintenance yourself its stupid cheap. In Chicago were just on our last weekend of bullshit weather we've got a couple of days above 50 degrees. We're just starting to pull our bikes out. Great video as always SS

Good Video. I agree although currently I live in Michigan but that hasn't stopped me from putting about 1800 miles on from November until now. Yeah, there's been a lot of days I couldn't ride like the last couple days but if the roads have been clear and it's above 40, I'll head out on the bike. Of couse it's also been down in the 20s a few times on the way home. One night after watching a friends band, I had to wipe the frost off the seat and it was 26 degrees for the 10 mile ride home. Still better than being in a cage.

I had NO idea about the insurance thing in Florida. Holy chrome. Seriously mind blown, thinking about how younger me could have moved to Florida at 18 and got my M endorsement instead. The money saved alone vs what I was paying for car + insurance in MD/DC/VA would have covered rent. Damn. Time machines. Kudos for consistently supporting a small business. My Shadow 2003 Shadow 750 is my first and so far only bike. I love it.Very forgiving to ride, super easy to maintain. Granted I'm 38 now but I'm paying $100/yr for insurance. Good vid. Damn. ...Edit* OH YEAH! The Royal Enfield Classic 500 is like $5k brand new. Cycles of Silver Spring near me is the Enfield dealer for the DC area and they've got that WWII looking military green machine.

Im a 21 year old guy from the Netherlands, Europe, don't own a car. I ride a bobbed and fully blacked out Shadow 600 and pay something like 30 bucks per month for it. For that amount of money and the shitton of fun I have "not perfect" actually is fucking perfect. Personally I've been really passionate about bikes since I first saw OCC on tv when I was like 4 years old but I encourage every young person who might not be as much into bikes as I am to just go out n buy one. It's WELL worth it.

mopeds. i got a tomos targa for 200$ in 06. it's been crashed, hit by a car, stolen, and ridden under water. i've probably put about 500$ into it in parts over the years. no insurance, no reg. regular DL. georgia is very nice about "49cc" bikes. even when you put 70cc kits on them. it's gotten me to work over 1000 times. on time even. also, i learned a lot. i ate a reed screw and blew it up once. i rebuilt it from it's base components. i put the bearings on the crank shaft. i learned to tune carbs on that bike. it's really actually paid for itself many times over if you put a price on the knowledge i gained maintaining and modifying it.

Got back into motorcycles a few years ago, started with a Kawasaki Vulcan S. Bought it used with a couple miles on it for a little over $5k. If I didn’t get bit by the ADV bug I would have been comfortable keeping that thing for a long time (though if I had seen that $5k triumph tiger I would have had a really tough decision between that and my Africa Twin). Even if $5k is out of someone’s price range, you can get low miles 250cc bikes in good condition for a couple grand all day. It might not be a racebike but it’ll get you anywhere you need to go and give you great MPG on the way there. Totally agree on the personal responsibility for safety, everyone expects someone else to keep them safe nowadays but they’re not willing to do anything to protect themselves.

My first and current motorcycle is a 99 Suzuki ls650 Savage. Ive had it for four years. I live in one of the biggest cities in Denmark, 24 years old and studying software engineering and i pay 244 dollars a year for my motorcycle. Obviously i cannot drive during winter here in Denmark. But public transport is advanced and good here, and the bicycle takes me where i want to go in the city. Love my bike and cant wait for March to come to get the bike out and rolling again! 😎

Great video, especially for people who can ride all year. I, living in Poland, was not really able to ride since mid October and only for the last 4-5 days it's been getting reasonably warm to ride (last Saturday was official season start in my city). When I was 20, I finally got enough cash to pass my driving license. After that I wanted to buy a car - something small and cheap, like a early 90's Fiat Tipo, mid-90's Ford Scorpio or GenII VW Golf. I had around 2.2k PLN (655USD) and all of those cars would cost me around 1.1-1.5kPLN (330-450USD) to buy and the cheapest one to insure was 1.6k (477) for a Daewoo Tico, which would cost me around 800PLN (238USD). If you don't know what it is - it's a beer can thin sheet steel box with a three cylinder 800cc engine making 41 horses with a max speed of 88.8mph. Sooo... I paid 1450PLN (430USD) for a 50cc motorcycle, a 2010 Romet CRS Supermoto, which would cost me 130pln (39USD) to insure per year, AND I would have insurance history that would give me discounts later. Now, being 23 I'll start saving for a 125cc engine to swap it in (which would give it similar top speed of that Tico xD), since if you have car license for over 3yrs you can ride 125cc motorcycles without additional driving licenses (and for me those 3yrs will be in December). And when we're talking about it... There are THREE DIFFERENT MOTORCYCLE LICENSES HERE. There's A1 - up to 125cc, 11kW and 0.1kw/kg, which you can make if you're 16 or older, there's A2 - up to 35kW and 0,2kW/kg, which you can make if you're 18 or older and a full A - every bike, but to have that license you'd have to be either 24 or have A2 for over 2yrs. And there's also AM for mopeds up to 50cc and with top speed limited to 45kph/29mph which you can make if you're 14, but it's also included in every other driving license category. Overall, prices seem to be different here, compared to what you got in the states (esp. insurance and used vehicles), but with minimum wage of 1530PLN (456USD) per month and average earnings are between 1.8k and 3.5k with median income of 2.5k (554, 1051 and 745USD respectively, that's 6648, 12612 and 8940USD per year) well... It's tough. And to give you a few indicators - regular gas is 5.29USD per gallon (5,69 for premium), base price for a 2018 Honda CB650F is 10 184.96 and base price for a 2018 Toyota Corolla is 17 242.96USD). I don't even know why I wrote all of that. I guess I just find it interesting how in different countries different commodities cost in relation to wages and currency. To you 10USD is pretty much the same as 10PLN for me, but for me 10USD is 35PLN and for you 10PLN is 3USD. Weird.

I've had quite a few bikes and I haven't spent over $4000 on any of them. 2001 softail bought with light lay down damage was $2800. I put $1000 into it and it's perfect again. '88vlx600 $1000, '83 vt500c $850 (the bike in my profile picture)and even got my lady a scooter for $300. All running and riding. If only Minnesota weather would cooperate! Great vid by the way.
