No expert here but I have been cutting and stacking wood for most of my 63 years. We have a wood bin too. Ours is sectioned into 3 bays. We live up in Upstate NY and we get quite a bit of snow and cold weather. But the 3 sections are FIFO sorted. One bay will be the oldest (most seasoned) and we use it first. Then when that one is empty we move to the next bay and call our wood guy and have him deliver more. As we empty our bays we fill them but move on to the next bay and burn that till the bay is empty and move to the next one. We use between 15-20 face cords (8' long x 4' high x whatever your length is) of wood in the winter. We use almost all wood to heat our house. 3 bed 2 baths one story house. We have to situate eco fans on the woodstove and doorway fans to spread out the heat everywhere in the house. The only time we use the furnace is when we have a polar vortex or in the spring and fall so we don't cook ourselves out of the house, like today we didn't need it at all. 70 degrees. We stack our wood any way it fits and won't fall over. Bark up, bark down it doesn't matter as it's undercover. We also have small tarps on carabiners we hang from a cable in front of the wood so it doesn't get rain or a bunch of snow on it. You just open it like a curtain. We have to use bungees to keep the wind from blowing it around but it works very well. Good luck with your new wood bin!🥰😍 Love your family and your videos.💙

Situations vary. I'm a low-income senior citizen living in a small subsidized apartment building in a major northern US city. I have no room to put extras or even a small freezer. I already rely on Hunger Task Force food to get through the month. I will just have to get by best I can.

@@Og-Judy yeah, a LOT of us older people (60 years and older) will just have to do the best we can. But God is good and he loves his children and he has ALWAYS taken care of me and my family, and he WON’T fail us now. Loved your kind reminder to be prepared for whatever lurks in thr future. I learned as a child (now 76) to be as ready as I could for whatever life tosses my way.... 1 year's supply of food, cash on hand, heating resource (coal back then) long burning candles, water storage, etc. When I lived on acreage I was uncomfortable until there was 5 ton of hay stacked in the barn and 5 cords of wood plus the food storage filled to the brim. Now I live in a city on 1/3 acre. Installed wood burning inserts in the fireplaces. Still have 3 cord (ricks) of 3 year old wood stacked and covered along the fence. Have about 6 month supply of food. 50 gallons of drinking water. Filled 4 gallon tanks of propane. Sitting fairly comfortable for this winter. You two are so great to watch. Your kindness and sense of humor bless us all. Thanks!!!

Rachel sounds like me. She’s very practical and sensible. When my husband was going to help me put small water bottles in a cooler for a church campfire, instead of bringing the cooler over to the refrigerator for the cooled bottles, he had the cooler across the kitchen and was taking the bottles there. 😂

Haha, my daughter did something similar the other day. She came home with groceries, set them on the kitchen table (across the room from pantry and fridge) and was walking the items over a few at a time. I got up, moved the bags to the island between the fridge and pantry, and she just looked at me like I was a genius! Firstly, has the girl (22 yo now) never seen me unpack groceries and secondly, it was just hilarious. I still giggle about it.

Much respect. Its not scare tactics to be prepared. There are so many uncertainties in the world. I homestead in Peru. 2 years ago mine was the only house in a huge agricultural area. Now i have 42 houses on top of me 😔 Before we had community grazing rights now we have had to rent land to grow food for our animals. Also the citified folks ate already complaining about animal smells. They already forbid roosters and pigs 🤬 We have a year left with the cows, bulls, sheep, alpacas, horses and donkeys 😨 We will have to stick with our smaller animals guinea pigs, rabbits, turkeys,.we are changing how we grow potatoes now in bins because we cant afford to use the land space. We have started sprouting the grains for the large animals( and us) we started 4 years ago with food storage but with 5 growing families and the 4 widows we help it depletes rapidly. Blessings, prayers from Grandma in Peru

I'm in my late 60's when I grew up on a farm we didn't have wood to burn we burned coal in our pot bellied stove. It stayed hot downstairs but not so much in the bedrooms upstairs. We also had a windmill for our water pump and and an old fashioned hand water pump in the kitchen. Water had to be heated for all 5 children's bath and we had to used same bath water. We just prayed we were first in the tub.

Howdy Y'all. Thanks for the prep warning. Y'all did great on your firewood. I was thinking now you have the other side if you need to stack green fresh cut firewood. By the way October is both Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Domestic Violence Awareness Month. So I am posting this here....Ladies go get your Mammies grammed. Also if you know or suspect someone is being abused - verbally, emotionally, sexually, or physically, ask them. Validate their experience. Help them to get to safety. Please. 1 victim of domestic violence will be killed by their domestic partner every 2 minutes in the United States this year. Let's help change this statistic.

First off: I love your channel and have fallen in love with your family. I am an old fashioned old lady.Second: growing up us kids had to help dad gather firewood for the winter. We had to have lots of wood because we had to heat and cook with it. Nothing better than food cooked on an old fashion wood cook stove. Dad always stacked his wood in the first layer he put bark up,,,, second layer bark down. This rotation was used all the way to the top. Love you all so take care.

That is the smart way of stacking wood. Now you can grab wood from the oldest / driest wood row. And when a row is empty you can fill it with new wood to give it time to dry, while still taking wood from the other rows. As for bark up or down, I have seen several channels do tests to see if there is a difference in drying, I don't remember anyone finding more than minor differences. As for preparing. Even having a few weeks of food in stock can make a world of difference. There does not have to be a nationwide catastrophe. Just having a hiccup in your personal finances is easier to overcome with having a little food reserve. Just make sure you have stored food you actually eat and rotate old stock for new.

You might wish to cage up around 10 of your best layers so you CAN FIND a set amount of eggs each day. That caged flock you can feed your scraps to and off set their feed. The rest of the poultry can be on their own as usual. You may wish to fix the old chicken tractor, fill it with spent hay and have it available for the overflow of the geese. They might use it to lay eggs in this spring if they get used to it over winter.

Can I ask, though, why you didn’t stack the wood across the back of the shed instead of along the sides, since the side walls would have made a natural support to keep the wood from rolling out the front? Kevin you did such a good job with the wood shed. Great team work moving the wood. One of my chores when I rented a house with 4 others in my early 20’s was looking after the wood. I had a trailer, so I picked up the wood from the supplier, then stacked it (bark up) in the back yard covered with a tarp, kept the inside wood box & wood rack on the verandah always full. Secretly I loved this “chore” & I would have been in wood heaven if I had a shed like yours😊 Cheeky Skeeter made his thoughts known about the situation🤣 Prayers for your Mum Rachel🙏🏼 Take care & cheers🐨🦘🥰

We started prepping at the beginning of the summer when we heard the prices of pork & beef were going up along with general groceries. Two yrs ago we took down 22 trees around our house. We filled our woodshed and stacked the extra rounds & covered them. This past week we split enough rounds to last for a couple of yrs. We did buy an extra freezer to put them extra sides of beef & pork in. I think that we are prepared for the next 2 yrs except for milk & fresh vegetables. This is the most food we have every bought.

For me I would just stack it so it’s stable and not going to fall or cause the other wood to fall, so if that’s the bark up on 1 piece and bark down on the next then that’s how I would do it 🤷‍♀️ but we’ve never had a fire place to need it. But we’re living in our camper while we build our house we plan on putting a wood burning stove in and will need the wood and maybe then I will be picky about stacking 😂😂. Have a great weekend ❤

Watching you two work makes me thankful that I have electric baseboard heat in my house I wouldn't be able to heat with wood at my age of 78 and alone I don't think my dog and cat could help me with heating my house. I stack my firewood straight up still in the trees 🌳 just had to joke about it a bit.

You're absolutely right, things aren't getting any easier or any cheaper out there. If you haven't already, now's the time to start prepping. I'm older and on disability and the cost of living adjustments don't come anywhere near the rise in the cost of living. That being said, I've been buying extra and prepping not only my pantry and freezer, but seeds for the garden, medical supplies, hygiene and cleaning supplies, pretty much anything you can think of. There's just no way of knowing what's going to happen next, if we'll be able to get those things or not, or whether we'll actually need some extra to barter with. God bless and keep praying. Remember pray for the best but prepare for the worst.

I get the gaps in a wood shed, but in Scotland there is a farm that builds all their barns the same way, and I can't figure out why. That she'd is something to be proud of!

I live in a Senior living apartment and I have been buying caned food and dried goods and making sure I have plenty of bottled water, just in case we have a winter storm and the power goes out, I agree the way things are going we must be prepared

This is a great woodshed for your area. Here where we get snow I think it would work with the simple addition of some sort of folding door/wall setup. Something like the folding doors on a closet with several on each outside wall that can be latched open in the good weather seasons but closed for winter snow season. Our old old garage door worked the same & made it a non- electric way that even a child could open a 10ft opening easily. Each door was 5ft with hinges in the middle and of course attached with hinges on the outside edges of the doorway. You might want each side done in 3-4 sections connected with hinges depending on the width of the opening or how you want it to look/stick out when open
