Nobody understands that Jesus fed the hungry, clothed the naked, healed the sick, comforted the oppressed. Thank you, Mike, for confirming what I’ve always thought about that passage. The “greater things“ probably refers to the quantity of miracles and souls saved by the disciples and the church as a whole. Jesus only had three years to perform signs and wonders on the earth, but the church has had centuries through the Holy Spirit.

The Book of Acts. .. Read it !!God has privileged us IN CHRIST JESUS to have above the ordinary human plane of life. Those of you who want to live on the lower plane can do so, but as for me, I will NOT. The same anointing, the same zeal, the same Holy Spirit power is at our command as it was at the command of Stephen and the Apostles. We have the same God that Abraham and Elijah had, and we do not need to lag behind in receiving any gift of grace. Stephen was an ordinary man, became extraordinary under the Holy Spirit's anointing."And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and signs among the people" (Acts 6:8) (Acts 6:5) As we go deeper WITH GOD, HE enlarges our capacity for understanding and places before us a wide open door !!

When we pray for our heart’s desires, we need to be sure our heart’s desires are in line with what Jesus has taught us are our top priorities: Love the Lord your God and love your neighbor as yourself. Prayer isn’t a wish list for a genie, it is actively, whole-heartedly aligning your heart to God’s and THEN asking whatever you will. Keeping in mind that when you do align yourself appropriately, your heart’s desires change to be more in line with His. From there, the answered prayers and miracles can flow more freely, because we aren’t hindered by selfish desires. So much more to unpack, but I hope this thought is complete enough to make sense.

I agree! Mark 11:22-23 says you can throw a mountain into the ocean with faith. But is that Gods will? The Holy Spirit revealed to me that if you did do that physically, it would cause a massive title wave that would kill millions of people. While one might have faith to do that it isn’t Gods will to do it because it would hurt so many.
@MJlikellamas2 жыл бұрын
Totally agree so often we come to God with the attitude of what hoops do I need to jump through to make God bend the knee to my will. Often we claim it has to be God's will because we have decided in our own mind and our own insight that it would be good. But what do we know of what is truly good can we see or comprehend the ways of God no this is why we say his will and not ours.
@timkins91552 жыл бұрын
Those are good points, and we have verses to back them up, but that isn't really what this text is saying. WHOEVER BELIEVES... For example, Jesus only replaced an ear. Greater limbs have been replaced. He only raised a few. But hundreds have been raised from the dead. When He says something plain, He generally means it. There are of course many esoteric sayings of the Lord. This isn't really one of them. And the Greek for greater means more in number AND/Or better in some quality. It's impossible to discern which one is meant from the Greek, which why the translators leave it as "greater," even though we don't speak that way in English.

Someone might have already said this, but after having completed nearly 140 hours of seminary lecture, and deeply focusing on proper hermeneutics, I can say there are texts in the Bible we should absolutely NOT be inserting ourselves into. The context of this passage is Jesus speaking to his disciples. This is not a sermon to the masses. He is asking questions and answering questions from a really small subset of human beings to whom he has endowed very specific gifts with which they will grow the emerging church. If we approach it with this context, we can look at Peter being involved. Peter is ultimately hung upside down on a cross, stoned, imprisoned multiple time, and has multiple gifts (tongues, healing etc..) Many believe Thomas was killed in Asia. Paul is also on the horizon. Surely Jesus already knew the plan to regenerate Saul of Tarsus. If we don't insert ourselves into the emerging church, this passage reads really easily. Do we honestly believe it was PAUL or PETER who really did those great works?? _______________________________________________________ Next, look really carefully at what Jesus states: John 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. Who is ACTUALLY doing the works?? JESUS! You're not DOING anything. It is Christ working THROUGH YOU by way of the Holy Spirit. Jesus is clearly telling them, I am going to do these works THROUGH you disciples. Know this. John 14:14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. Verse 14: I WILL DO IT.

❤❤❤Thinks brings to mind “The lady with the issue of blood”… she only had to touch His hem and Jesus felt it. He feels when we ask things of Him. We just need Him that’s all. He will provide all we ask according to His riches in glory. What do we really need if we are believing that we belong to Him and will return to Him? We need equipping so that His glory might be revealed to a dark and sinful world. What do we ask for? What must we seek? We seek his kingdom and all else will be added. We seek His presence… and yet, once we have found Him - no - once God calls and seals us we need to die, for it is gain - and to live, is Christ. Therefore, we as disciples have determined to nothing but Christ Jesus and Him crucified ❤Our Lord is perfect. HE is holy. THE ONLY RIGHTEOUSNESS ONE

I'm glad you brought up Paul and his prayers to go to Rome, because they were eventually answered. Not only were they answered but Rome paid the whole fare, provided armed escort, prevented people from drowning when the ship ran aground off the island of Malta. Why? Because Paul was obedient to the Lord. He went to Jerusalem knowing something was going to happen to him, when it did, he appealed to Caesar. We have to get away from the idea of thinking we can order God around and start asking ourselves, "What does my Lord have in store for me?"

This philosophy has dominated most of the American mega churches and big Eva; with one of the significant side effects the loss of focus on building the kingdom. While we are focusing on OUR power and MY victory, the world has been tearing down the Christian worldview and has left young Christians confused about cultural issues and the rot of modern and post-modern thinking (and has shown Christianity as a circus). What is needed most is courageous pastors to start teaching again (recapturing what is Biblical "love"), unapologetically embracing Christian doctrine even if that means we cannot please everyone who walks through the doors. Recapture the paideia of the Lord and lets see the rock continue to grow into a mountain, consuming the whole earth.

This has been a verse of struggle for me. Because like you guys said, there is NO WAY we can do greater things than Jesus. John 1 informs us that Jesus made everything, we don’t have that kind of power. After contemplating the verse, I have come to believe that both the qualitative and quantitative view are consistent with scripture. Mike did an amazing job at explaining the quantitative perspective. But regarding the qualitative perspective, the greatest thing that the we can do IS sharing the Gospel and leading others to Jesus and his work on the Cross. And it’s a gift that every believer has the access to! In John 14 it appears that Jesus is saying something to the effect of “You see these signs and wonders and marvel at them, however you guys are gonna do something that is gonna make these miraculous events look puny and insignificant” (sorry that’s not the best paraphrase). Therefore, the only work which we can do that is greater than the miracles Jesus did is sharing the Gospel. The gift of a sinner repenting and receiving eternal life makes any other supernatural event look puny and insignificant, unless, they lead people to repentance and trust in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Otherwise, as Mike said, they can be used by Satan to draw people away from the pure Gospel of Jesus Christ. Thank you guys for such a good video.

The miracles Jesus did on the earth do not begin to reveal the full power or capacity that He has. Jesus came to show us what God can do through us, not the ultimate capacity of what He can do.

Is everyone going to ignore the fact that they misquoted John 14:12? Jesus said the same works and greater works. It's obvious that greater is about quality in that verse because Jesus makes a distinction between the same works and greater works. There is a verse in Proverbs that tells us not to lean on our own understanding. And there's another verse in either 1 or 2 Corinthians (I forget which) that tells that the natural mind does not and can not understand the things of God because they are spiritually discerned. Also, being caught up to Heaven is not astral projection when God does it. Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean it's not Biblical. People often criticize what they don't understand and confuse their lack of understanding for discernment. Before the Church can even consider doing the greater works, the Church needs to get back to the same works.

Faith and ri. hteousness has ALWAYS been a fundamental problem for humanity. Without perfect faith we shouldn't expect miracles. So, using the fact that there weren't an endless abundance of recorded miracles is great evidence for lack of perfect faith. I've highlighted about 47% of the NT which either very directly and powerfully states or indirectly suggests that we are all supposed to be and can be overwhelmed with miraculous provision for any of our requests. There are admittedly minimal boundaries to G. ds provision but we can basically get ANYTHING we perfectly trust for.

I think that Mike makes an excellent point by referring to quantity above quality. The question for discussion remains: WHAT are these works? It's obvious for any reader: every work Jesus did, we could also do (except for forgiving sins). “For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Healing, Deliverance, Feeding the poor, Preaching the Gospel, Teaching and Prophesying seems like the "Good Works" that God prepared for us to do through the power of the Holy Spirit. Last thing, Im not a fan by the clips that are inserted through this theological assessment. It is distracting and poking at charismatics. Im not a hyper charismatic myself, so I personally see some messy and misleading issues in certain practices and convictions. But it seems like the supernatural work of what the Holy Spirit can do is mocked, because of the ministers that are acting weird. When we read the scripture of supernatural events, we can make an interpretation by imagination how it would look like. But when we experience or see these in reality, our natural mind can not comprehend it. We should discern it wisely. Im fully aware that demonic forces can imitate the things of God, but let us not dismiss it so easily because it looks and feels weird. It will always be naturally shocking, because it is beyond natural, therefor, miraculous signs and wonders..

Well articulated rebuttal. I’m not sure what to make of this refute to be honest. I do know that these clips that are inserted certainly do not promote the unity that the Father longs for. Love the conversation and pursuit of truth. The clips really took away from that.

Yes and amen! This is a great and greatly needed conversation. Especially because of the deception in the last days. I love that you cover the discussion on both God saying no and what is or isn’t God’s will. More on that in a minute. Ok, so oddly there is some truth and not the helpful kind to what they are saying. What I mean is that there is a transference that takes place when someone lays hands on you. It could be godly but in this case it’s a transfer of demons. The scripture teaches to be careful who you let lay hands on you. 1Tim 5:22 Also, why doesn’t he take that gold he found on his hands to the bank and cash it in?? Just saying. Also, when the Apostles preached, they preached the gospel and signs followed. They didn’t preach signs and wonders with Jesus to follow, that’s not how that works. Lastly Mark 1,2 &5 teach that Jesus healed because He had the authority to do so. He’s God so of course He has the authority. 1 Corinthians 12:27-31 says 27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way. The next chapter 1 Corinthians 13 discusses the greater way as love. Why is Paul asking do all have the gift of healing? Because all don’t have it. So those who don’t have it but pretend that they do are operating in deception and do not have the authority to operate as though they have a gift that they don’t. This verse also teaches that we ought to pursue love more than healing gifts. Scripture teaches we should test the spirit to see if they are of God 1 John 4 and Gal 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. As far as I understand, there are a few reasons why some people don’t see the healing they ask for. 1 it isn’t God’s will, and that’s not always easy to understand. Paul had a thorn in the flesh he said to keep him humble and God’s Grace is sufficient as Mike noted. Some people feel frustrated because they’re told that they don’t have enough faith when it may be a matter of God’s will. It also may be a matter of the person laying their hands on people claiming they have the gift of healing when they don’t. Then the person walks away thinking they have a lack of faith when in reality the person praying doesn’t have the gift of healing and the Lord is not going to endorse a deceitful spirit. 12 The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, to prepare the way for the kings from the east. 13 And I saw, coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs. 14 For they are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty.

It's about leading people to Christ. Because savings souls is far greater than raising the dead or healing the sick or any other kind of miracle.

What if the early church was just like the charismatic movement? 🤔 How do we know it wasn't? All we have are claims in a book. If people today could be fooled and taken advantage of then certainly people 2,000 years ago could have been. What if the charismatic churches all write a book with examples of the miracles that they said happened and 300 years from now, people grouped those books together. Then 2,000 years from now, people accept them as historical. What if?

This was great. I do feel like Gods word has this amazing way of exposing the intents of our heart when interpreting it. Greater in quantity is my position. Though growing up in the pentacostal/charasmatic movement quality was the way we were taught. I totally agree with what Mike said, do we even test, or at the very least wonder about the spirit of things we entertain?
@healingthroughchrist19882 жыл бұрын
Then why does Jesus make a distinction between the same works and greater works? If greater meant quantity, there wouldn't be any need to say greater works because it would have been obvious. Many Christians are uncomfortable with the idea of doing greater miracles than Jesus because "it's heresy". But they forget that Jesus never did any miracle with his own power. He did it through the power of the Holy Spirit as an example to us.
@WyntrWxlfStudios2 жыл бұрын
@@healingthroughchrist1988 I don't think a distinction is what is being emphasised in this part of the passage, but an interesting question to ask would be what this discourse would have meant to those who are present while Jesus was speaking, why it was a significant function and the implications in the midst of the Judeo-Christian first century. I also wouldn't say that I am uncomfortable. My concern is that there are some professing believers who have succumbed to the spiritual lust for signs wonders and miracles, at the expense of the beauty of the faith, it's fundamentals and under extreme cases Christ altogether. It's also interesting when you consider that Jesus illuminates the dynamic that unsaved people can be used to fulfill His ministerial purpose, Judas comes to mind as the most prominent example, but Matthew 7 21-23 is also piece worth considering. I've got nothing against the way God demonstrates His power and validates Himself in scripture, Jesus after all is God, and had it proved, but I do feel there is a lack of reverence, fear and discernment on the topic of how things work today. I'm reminded of Ezekiel 13 also.

The 1st great work was performed by Peter when he preached an open air sermon on the day of pentecost. 3,000 people were added to the church. The gospel is the great work we will do if we are faithful. Fun fact: this was the day the Holy Spirit was given to the church. The day the law was given to Israel 3,000 people were swallowed into the ground.

Excellent points made! This is why I keep asking people to not cherry pick and consider the entire context of Scripture. To me, I have had a sense that the modern "greater works" than Jesus message is a form of idolatry. Consider how serious a sin idolatry is. How is it possible in our finite human condition to step outside of God's will and "improve" on how Jesus did things-- when He did and spoke as the Father directed?! Huge conflict. The enemy would be the one to introduce this kind of distortion.
@proverbs25222 жыл бұрын
I think some of God’s descriptions of His nature like glory mean way more than our English semantics because every word in Hebrew means a whole essay and every one is place where it is completely on purpose. We’d understand a lot about our Creator is we learned these things. The Bible is fractal and I’m sure there’re plenty of things we’ve not discovered yet.
@Kuebs8002 жыл бұрын
In my view, when Jesus said that we will do “greater works than these”, the word “these” is in reference to just the ministry and miracles that Jesus was in engaged in that geographical area, and this statement would exclude His resurrection since that hadn’t occurred yet. Obviously, no believer will do something greater than raising from the dead. However, the disciples and apostles would do something that is greater than geographical scope than Jesus, that is, he divinely inspired to record the gospels and spread them across the Roman world. This, in turn, made Jesus’ message of forgiveness and atonement available to the entire world. Simply put, the disciples ministry post Jesus’ ascension was greater in geographical scope, and not greater than the quality of the miracles that Jesus performed - like raising from the dead. No disciple or believer has bodily resurrected from the dead on their own authority like Jesus did.
