I am Japanese. It is actually "Ushi no koku mairi" (this is what the ritual was traditionally called). It is written in Japanese as 丑の刻参り. 丑 (牛 is the modern way of writing it) is the ox of the Chinese zodiac. 丑の刻 (pronounced Ushi no koku) is between 11PM and 1AM, and it is the old Japanese way to tell time. It is said that 丑の刻参り is done to call upon an old evil god/spirit during the 常夜 (pronounced "Tokoyo." it means the constant night and darkness) to place a curse upon someone.

A few years ago, I began making the version of this doll from the anime Hell Girl with the black straw and red thread. I didn't do it to harm others or desecrate anything. I just like to weird people out. I would just leave them in random places around town for people to eventually find. I made hundreds of them and a lot were found but I am sure there are some waiting to be found in the older parts of a few libraries and corners of bookstores and hiding in the occult section. I live in a small town in Vermont and there's not much to do here. I made the local paper several times with everyone was wondering about the dolls and who left them around town.

Regarding the one about Singapore, from what I've heard, its legal to chew it, but not to sell or buy it within the country. So the only way you could get chewing gum is bringing it back from outside countries. As for why it was banned, Singapore used to have an issue where irresponsible people would stick gum in random places for their convenience instead of wrapping them in a tissue paper and throwing them away. This resulted in quite an issue for the government and quite a lot of costs to clean up the gum. Thus the ban, to minimalize such instances ever happening.

The Strawdoll originated from the MaoShan Sect of Taoism dated back around 2700 years, passed into Japan during Tang Dynasty. According to legends, was used by trained MaoShan Shamans to extract bad energy or evil spirit from someone then trap them inside then burn the strawdoll using lychee branches to break the bondage/curse. It can also be used in reserve to curse someone, but requires something biological from the target's body such as hair, skin, blood then wrapped with a yellow spell charm written with crimson ink made from the combination of the blood of a 50 year old hen + cinnarbar followed by an incantation, the target's spirit will be linked to the strawdoll

It's really interesting, I learnt about them from an anime called 'Ghost Hunt', there is a version where it's made out of wood in the shape of a person. But it was interesting to learn that the doll itself is neutral, and like with a lot of religious objects cause be used for good or evil, in cases of good it is used to protect a person from harm, in the case where it's evil (likely why this law was put in place) it is used to cause harm or a death curse upon someone. Japanese spiritual (supernatural and religious) always are so interesting to learn about :)
@lauraholmes240210 ай бұрын
I can see another reason you can be arrested other than desecrating shrines and that’s the intent to harm. It doesn’t matter if it wouldn’t have worked, you did this with the intent to cause serious damage.
