i've been using the midori 10-year journal for a few years, and it's honestly pretty fun to see what i was doing one year or two or three years ago on that day, and i end up mentioning it to my coworkers or family when it pertains to them. i don't often have time to read through my other journals, but the set-up and use of the 10-year journal makes it so i review past years regularly.

Those notebooks are actually pretty common in all countries that use ISO paper formats. The ISO formats were specifically designed to allow for that kind of operation: halving one format gives the next format in the series that has the exact same ratio between length and width. And although the majority of regular books are bound on the long side, notebooks bound on the short side are not a rarity. And "half B5" is simply B6.

The landscape style notebooks were used at schools in my country long before the prevalence of laptops. They were usually needed at geography and biology classes where we had to also draw some maps for geography, or plants, animals, organs, etc in the case of biology and this landscape format was prefferred.

Either the Japanese are very very meticulous or they have way too much free time. I think it is the former. Man, I love Japan! God, what an insight! Something as mundane and routine made so amazing. And the beauty of all this lies in it's simplicity. These are not very unique or hard to come by solutions but it shows that by simply paying a little more attention, such beauty and efficiency can be attained. Truly magnificent. 日本の友人たち、本当にありがとう!
