That guy in the first video is a complete tool. He's antagonizing the poor baby. Sadly these days there's so much disrespect for animals that people will taunt and distress them so they can feel validated by 'likes'. It's absolutely NOT okay to go up to Australian wildlife and do what he did. Do this to a big red and you're probably going to get booted hard.

My retriever chased a medium sized kangaroo which turned, grabbed him round the middle and held on tight. We managed to get the kangaroo to let go, but the dogs back was injured. Wild kangaroos are dangerous.

@@RachelDavies-wn7irYes they are. And in the guy in the video was likely on his own property with his dog. Kangaroos can and will easily kill a dog. If you’ve ever seen a big red male, you’ll understand that when they stand up on their hind legs supported by their tail, they can reach 7 feet tall and have muscles that can put Arnold Schwarzenegger to shame. Fearsome and dangerous.

Joeys when born are about the size of a jelly bean, grow inside the pouch until they are developed enough or just too big and mum kicks em out. It's funny seeing them try get back in when they are clearly are too big.

That first young joey was still dependent on its mother for milk / survival. When dogs chase a mob of roos, the joeys often get separated from their mother and get lost. They often pass away. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the eventual fate of that joey. I didn't see a pouch, so it was probably a male.

Story time. When I was in kinder, and about 4-6 years old, we went on a trip to the local wildlife park. Awesome, I love animals. Well, eventually we get to the kangaroos, and I’m not sure what kind of kangaroo they were, but still full size roos. Even better, said wildlife park had an open grassy area for the kangaroos to lounge in and people to interact with them. It started to rain and we took shelter under a nearby seating area. While the teachers were distracted, small me decided now would be a great time to play with the kangaroos. I spotted one and started following it, jumping as well. It turned around a tree, and I followed. Then, the kangaroo turned 180, huffed loudly in my face, and I realised “Oh I should stop”. I returned to base at once. Children of the internet, I got lucky. I got a warning. That roo could’ve put me in the dirt with one kick. Do not antagonise kangaroos. Everyone (animals included) enjoys their personal space. Mockery probably isn’t a good idea either. And listen to the people protecting you, even if they’re not very good at it. No shade to kangaroos, I would’ve been annoyed at me too. In summary: Kangaroos may seem cute and funny looking, and they are, but respect them and they’ll probably respect you. If not, bad things could happen. Not everyone gets a warning. Thanks for reading my experience.

Many, many years ago my family went to Healesville Sanctuary in Victoria and we were able to go into a large kangaroo enclosure. I was around 10 or 11 and I went up to what was, from memory, a very big kangaroo and I tried to pick up it's tail as it half laid there. Didn't happen. I pulled at it and nothing. The kangaroo ignored me fortunately and I'll never forget the lessons I learned that day. Parents can be idiots, kids can be idiots and kangaroos can be very chill, if you're lucky.

A full grown kangaroo can and will kill a dog. This guy has done nothing wrong. The joey is still confrontational and he has rebutted it in a very kind way. They (the owner and his dog) are likely on their own property. Australians DON’T cage kangaroos as pets like Americans do. They are wild and free, with an emphasis on wild. The kangaroos that tourists visit and pet are in sanctuaries. If you try to pet one like that in the wild, there’s every chance you’ll be attacked. It’s illegal in Australia to own them as pets.

Kangaroos come in all sizes, from the western red (about 6 feet high) to the "paddy melon" (about the size of a domestic cat) that used to inhabit Kangaroo Island (near Adelaide). I live on a rural property near Toowoomba, and we have a local mob of wallabies (about 4 feet high when fully grown). We get Eastern Greys (a bit small than Western reds) occasionally, mainly when there is a drought. Any fully-grown roo can out-run a dog; the immature ones are not so fast. When a sizeable roo does not run, but stands and faces you, it's time to be polite.

If you want a good experience with kangaroos, try Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary on the Gold Coast. They just free-range in the park, and what most of them like to do with their freedom is lay down and sunbake/shadebake all day. There are special cups of food to feed them, and you can go up to a full-grown roo all sprawled out on the ground with it's eyes closed, hold the food up to it's mouth, and it will just start eating without hesitation and without even opening it's eyes. Also, they're so spoiled that they won't eat the stuff off the ground. If it falls down, they look down at it for a second, and then back at you expectantly, because they know you won't let them to get any dirt on their face while they're eating.

Baby roo's are born about an inch long. They climb from the Veej to the pouch, which is a mammoth feat. Considering they're that small hairless, deaf & blind. Yes it is true that Roos aggressively attack humans on the golf course but the lesson in that is, it only happens in Qld. because in other states people have more sense than to encourage tourists to feed them with carrots just for that selling point. Roos can’t handle the sugar, coz it’s not meant for them but once they’ve had it, they need it. So they attack tourists to get their fix. Sad for the Kangaroos to be addicted or suffering from diebetes - and sad too for the unquestioning clueless Qldlanders.

Roos are great, until they decide to leap in front of your car. My little Mazda cost me, (well, my insurance company), $3,000 after an exciting car/roo encounter. My ute, (truck for you Americans), fared a little better, a big grey decided to jump in front of it while I was doing 110 KPH. Bent the bull bar ever so slightly. Kangaroo achieved his suicide mission.

I will never forget the experience of driving home at night from my university 200 kilometres from my home when a kangaroo (not sure which type of roo but a quite decent size) started hopping along beside me. I was driving at the maximum legal speed but slowed down as I did not want to risk either me hitting the kangaroo, or indeed the roo hitting my car (they can cause a lot of damage to both to the car and themselves. Fortunately I arrived at an intersection and the roo and I said goodbye, both of us safe

Quotation from a US comedian: When we say bless your heart, it means … “you’re an idiot”! We don’t quite mean that. Mostly. Usually it just means you’re cute. Aaaand maybe not quite the full quid. (There’s a saying you don’t hear much any more, but an Aussie would understand it. You can probably guess, Ry.)

I've encountered kangaroos before. I also spent time around them at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve in Canberra. Just be respectful and don't provoke them. When I'm out on a walk I just look at them and keep walking.

Story time: shen I was 12, I woke up and I saw a kangaroo just walking through our courtyard trying to get through our backyard gate, I woke everyone up and we saw it hopping down our street. Mind you we don’t live near the countryside we are in the outer Melbourne city area.

I once hit a big red kangaroo in a car. It was 3am and I was returning home after a call out from an outback mine where I was working. I only just clipped it so there was no damage to my car or the kangaroo. I stopped to check for damage and the kangaroo also stopped and gave me a mean look. I waited until the kangaroo jumped off before continuing on my journey home.

Kangaroos are such weird animals. In the wild they will actually lure a dog into a body of water, and then use that water to drown the dog by holding its head under the water.

I don't know about roos, but my dog attacked a Koala once in the backyard. She definitely got the worst of it, but was unperturbed and wanted another go. And this from an otherwise pretty timid dog. Stark contrast to my first dog who when a Koala crossed the backyard just walked behind it sniffing it in curiosity.

Those grey ones are wallabies. The difference between wallabies and kangaroos is the length of the leg from the knoee. Roos are long, wallies are shorter.

PICS BECAUSE IT HAPPENS: Ryan, there are a couple of photos in the Community section of my KZbin homepage of recent nocturnal visits of neighbourhood kangaroos in my front yard. The photos are grainy because I had to take them from inside the house, through the flywire screen of an open window, and then zoom in.

@@DeborahMcnaughton-y2p I get your intentions, but Ryan reacted to Australiana a year ago. See how it turned out. It's one thing to learn "Aussie" but this would be like sending a 5th grader to a calculus exam. Heck, even when Australiana came out most lifelong aussies only got maybe 90% of it before it sailed over their heads. It's not just Aussie English, it's sport references, political, place names, slang etc that depending on where one lives in Aust determines whether you have even heard of them. If he was to understand Australiana, he'd need to live here for at least 30 years to get even half of it.
