The best way to remove the flavour from a swede/turnip/rutebega is to buy it, then leaveit in the salad tray at the bottom of your fridge for about a week ir so, until it ripens and feels a lot softer, itwants to ve about as hard as a potato when you cut through it, instead of rock hard. This ripening time will remove a lot of that flavour. Peel and dice it, then boil or steam it to remove the rest of the flavour. I make a mix of swede, parsnip, cauliflower and celeriac, steamed and mashed with milk and butter, and the trick to making it's taste abd texture as near to mashed potato as possible is by adding instant potato flakes. I know thatisnt strictly jeto, but i only add in around 30g of potato flakes during the mashing stage, and as that 30g ofpotato flakes will only contain roughly 23g of carbs, and will be split between 6 portions, that equals to around under 4g of carbs + whatever itger liw carb amount us in the other vegetables used. Bearing in mind, i try and eat as much zero carb stuff as possible, so that i can enjoy the things with carbs without going over ny daily limit of 50g, it still a very liw carb amount, and the potato flakes make all the difference. So does adding small gram amounts of actual flour in to my other baking with things such as bread, cakes, buscuits cookies etc. i always do it small amounts, spread over many servings, and ut always imoroves the urems i make. To the point a lot of them dont taste like basic keto. And lets face it, being on keto 99% of the time is crap. The health side of it and the other benefits make it worth it, but it really is horrible doing it. The food is mostly all crap, the same basic ingredients recycled in to 50 different meals, over and over. the fact you cant eat anything really nice like you used to, and theres no way you would chose to do it if you had the choice. By making the food that we make for keto purposes just that little bit better, makes the whole process easier, and the end result is worth the sacrifices we make. It's ts just a shame we who do keto and low carb, are forced to spend so much money on ingredients. I understand at one point in history, typical keto ingredients like low carb and carb free flours were limited in production, so had to be more expensive, but now they are mass produced in the same way as standard wheat and grain flours are, but because they know that people will pay the higher prices, the market price stays the same or sometimes grows higher, instead of dropoing. I've visited other countries where items such as coconut flour and akmond flour are sold on the markets cheaply and are in daily use by the locals, costing the same price as the other carb containing flours available in their markets. So that proves that suppliers can supply low carb at a lower price if they want to. As keto diet followers we not only have to make most of the stuff we eat, but we are forced to pay even more of a premium for ready made keto food, aswell as we have to pay a premium for those ingredients used in home cooking. And those ingredients, such as the flours, are not, as any jeto cook kniws, an easy set of ingredients to work with. How many bread and cake recioes end up in the garbage bin because you accidently used 5g more or less of something, or was in the oven 1 minute too long, or looked cooked byt wasnt? You can easily use £10/$13 to make a (not great) loaf of keto bread that, at least in my country, if i was using non keto ingredients, would cost, ingredients wise, to make one individual loaf, around 40p/50¢, or if you are buying a ready made non keto loaf, from a supermarket, you could buy from as little as 50p/65¢, and if i was buying, what is, let's face it, a really horrible brick of an excuse for keto bread from a supermarket, it would be around £5/$6.50. so for me to have to throw away £10 each time I try a recipe and it doesnt work out, it gets disheartening and to be blunt makes me not want to try baking any more. Nothing is ever good enough, as you are constantly searching for a better rdcipe, even if the lastone you found was adequate. But when i feel like that, I stick with it because, through keto, I'm well on my way to reversing my diabetes. My wife was prediabetic when we started keto, and no longer is, and she has list 40lb in weight. Ive lost over 60lb and we are both still losing weight and getting healthier. Every 3 months or so we treat ourselves to one carb heavy meal just to get the craving out of our system, but it only takes us a few days to acheive ketosis again. The worst thing you can do is to keep denying yourself 'treats' because if you do, then eventually you will say screw this, and give up. Instead, have a little of what you fancy, not enough to kick you out of keto, but enough to where your craving has been satisfied and it's gone out of your mind for a while. Finding a substitution is good for that too. I know most (not all - there are excellent exceptions) keto food is cardboard tasting crud, but you can find something you like, just try experimenting with recipes. I make all my own cakes, bread, biscuits, etc, things like chic chip cookies, churros, donuts, pastries etc all from scratch. Even my own homemade chocolate (store bought sugar free chocolate contains malltitol, which spikes blood sugar and, if you are unlucky, like me, gives you raging liquid diarrhea) and i then use that homemade chocolate to make my own copycat chocolate candy bars such as snickers, twix, kit kat etc. i make them and freeze them. And that way, i dont get cravings for actual chocolate because the homemade ones are great and in some cases, better than the real thing. They satiate the craving. I use candarel sweetener, and since moving in to that, my body no longer craves sugar, its very like sufar in both flavour and texture, and it does the trick. Getting back to the video, this shepherds pie looks amazing. I will have to give it a try. Great video, i look forward to seeing more if your content (Apologies for prattling on, and for any spelling or grammar mistakes too!) For anyone doing keto and low carb, my advice is, if it works for you, stick with it. Even if you have days where it gets you down, that will pass. And the benefits far outweigh the negatives. At keast in my situation.

The extra bonus is, if you don’t tell your husband & kids it’s a turnip and not a potato, they’ll never notice. Their brain sees mashed white vegetable. Therefore it’s potato. The butter cream & cheese will further disguise the different flavour. One of mine even commented it tasted different to usual but it was really nice. I said, aw thanks hun! Must be the cheese 😊. 😂😂

Looks delicious! I love mashed turnips. When my daughter was young (kindergarten - now she's about to turn 40!), we embarked on a mission to try out a new fruit or veggie every week. Sometimes two if we couldn't decide. I'd seen turnips all my life and never had them so one week that was our choice. I tried them a few ways and I loved them! I actually preferred mashed turnips to potatoes - and I'm a potato loving Irish girl! My ex-husband couldn't get past that they weren't potatoes 🙄 so I stopped making them until he earned the "ex" in front of his title and I started keto. Been eating them again ever since!

Also try mixing them with a few parsnips, and/or a few parsley roots, the latter will give the puree an even more earthly flavour. Yes, parsnips are not ideal for Keto, but one does not need to use a lot - same with the carots.
