I got into bark river due to the DBK boys also. It sucks to see these flaws they have BUT they aren’t the only ones. I bought a Fallkniven a while back that was sharpened unevenly, the grind line was higher on one side and the edge (elmax) got small chips when I first used, but it was fine after I put a new edge on it.

If I’m paying over $300 for something that I don’t even get to put in my hands before I buy it then that thing better come flawless or damn near close to flawless. I have many bark rivers and a lot of them have been fine, but I’ve had a lot of them that were just, obviously flawed and I don’t feel like that’s acceptable.

As the person behind this knife design, I've got to say that this was a video I was very much looking forward to see! I had no idea you had one on pre-order, and yes, the wait was long. Very, very long. I'm glad you like the knife in terms of overall design, ergos, performance (pre-, but more so post, your own sharpening), but I'm ofc less happy to see the issues in terms of QC that you encountered with your Aurora III. Being able to re-grind and/or sharpen a knife is def. a useful skill, especially in situations like this. I'll be making my own Aurora III-video in the not too distant future, showcasing my 9 different Aurora III's; four from the first production run and five from this latest run. I appreciate you supporting this specific knife, both by actually purchasing one and, more so, by making this (highly enjoyable) video. I also appreciate your honesty, eye for details as well as providing solutions. Enjoy your Aurora III to the fullest, now that you've gotten it to where you want it to be (from a performance perspective)!

@@DinoNucci - I mean everything that I wrote in my comment. If you read something else than that, then it's fully on you. EDIT: I re-read my comment and realized that it could be interpreted the way that I physically made the knife shown in the video and that is not the case. I do NOT work for Bark River Knives. And I do ofc want my design to come out the way I designed it, without any flaws. But I'm glad that, in the end, he was happy with the knife.
@PinkG10
@PinkG10 2 ай бұрын
@@andrewmcgibbon9785 - $300 is a lot of money for a knife (even if it is delivered with a pretty high quality leather sheath), and there are versions of the Aurora III costing several hundred dollars more. I'm, however, not sure that I can agree with you that $300 is what one would pay for a "true" custom knife. That being said, the knife should not have any of the issues seen in this video. And no, I do not work for Bark River Knives. I, too, will comment on potential issues in my video(s) of the Aurora III. Just my two cents.

I personally own Barkies and bought my Son a Bravo 1 because Bark River produced quality knives. Later on, I bought a Bravo 1 in A2. The grind was obviously lopsided but is still functional. However, for the money I paid that should have NEVER EVER been an issue. Where is the quality control ? I live in Michigan and try to support businesses from my state, where Bark River Knives are produced. I then looked into White River Knives, also a Michigan business, and bought a Model 1 (Backpacker Pro) and later an Ursus 45. My White River knives are works of art and have the most ergonomic handles I have ever encountered. Both White River and Bark River Knives have legendary, no questions asked warranties but now I recommend White River over the Bark River Knives. White River produce finer quality knives. This is my humble opinion based on my personal experiences. Cheers from The Tip of the Mitt.

I swear they knowingly send the most obviously damaged/imperfect knives with quality issues to Europe on purpose because they know how expensive it is to get it released by customs/boarder control and that you will more than likely not be willing to pay that 100 euro release fee again to get it back again once it has been serviced this is on top of international shipping costs too. So with them probably knowing that they can assume with a high level of certainty that a customer from Europe probably won't complain or try to warranty a knife because of the absurd cost to the consumer to do so, they can just pawn off the crappy QC knives to Europe without hardly any repercussions or consequences. It's also a way for them to dodge warranty claims on less than perfect product while still selling it at full price instead of doing the right thing and spending more time and fixing imperfect knives or flat out throwing out ones that may be close to unsaveable I bet their product loss in production is very very low. Now I have nothing to prove any of this but it just seems like more people from across the pond receive crappy Bark Rivers than anywhere else.

Made in America means meh quality. There are some brands that are good, but most are meh. America is about quantity over quality, which is a quality on it's own. American quality tends to go for reliability, always the same. Starbucks, McDonalds, Hilton hotels.. it's the same everywhere. In other places we don't want the same as everywhere else, if I go to Italy I want wat Italy can give, if I go to China, I want China. When Fiat bought chrystler, the build quality of Jeeps went up...

Mine has an overground portion between the belly and the tip, and I got immediate edge damage near the heel of the blade after some light carving. I repaired the damage and increased the apex angle, and now it works fine. I'm a bit annoyed that a new knife needs to have a bit of work done until it's functional, but despite that, I'm happy with how it is after the repair and modification. The last knife I bought from Bark River was a Cub where the fullers are so uneven in length and size it's hard to believe that there was any quality control. The tip was so flimsy, that if I looked at at it hard enough it would snap off. I still have the bloody thing, and it's the last I will buy from them. For the price it costs, it needs to be of higher quality. What is the point of the semi handmade, if it's poorly done?

@@zacharykelly7434 You're right, I guess I was being dramatic. I should have specified that there were no flaws in the grind or handle other than the fat geometry.

In my experience Bark River edges only get better with resharpening. I have several that are bomb proof after some swipes on the WorkSharp. Generally they sharpen the edges almost too fine.

Ive never had a bad Bark River,,,,lucky i guess and my Bark Rivers were of older generations My favorite all time hunting knife is still the Bark River Mini Canadian Best blade to handle size for deer in my opinion But for a bigger woods knife i went LT Wright years ago and never looked back I would love to see you boys test Bark Rivers full size Canadian Its a old time design that doesn’t get the credit most bushcraft design knives get For a do it all belt knife its real hard to beat

I bought a BR Aurora 2 brand new, that had a sabre grind on one side a full flat on the other side. I am in the UK so to send it back i had to send it to Germany for there dealer to send it state side. I kicked up a fuss as QC was absent completely....BR comms and accountability was lacking. The shop i bought it from was Knives and Tools, they were brilliant, i managed to find someone in the UK to regrind, and i had a part refund to help pay for it to be done. I will never buy a Bark River knife again, and particularly if you are in Europe. Buck knives are supported in UK, buy Buck as my personal recommendation if you want customer service.

I have to echo several things. 1) my Bark River Aurora II, edge grind on one side is 10/10 perfect, the other side is 2/10 2) my Bark River Kephart blade rolled trimming TWIGS off of an Texas Oak tree. Not even pushed hard and a bad roll. That being said, all other fit and finish, hand feel, and design/look are so good otherwise.

Thanks to you guys i bought an UG Tools Tiny in Magnacut 65HRC! it’s light, the sheath is innovative, can everything better than this one! I recommend buying one, it’s a matter of time before the company can’t sell them anymore maybe due to the new probably incoming knife restrictions law in Germany…

I love bark river but I got a bushcrafter ultra light in 3v and the grind was so bad. The shoulders of the tang (not sure what they’re called but the part where the choil, blade grind and tang meet) were totally different on each side. One sloped slightly upward and the other curved sharply upward and only noticed when trying to sharpen it. I’ll probably send it to them to see if they’ll fix that and the sure touch scale that has a gap between it and the handle. They also need to work on their choil placement on some of their knives.

I own several Bark River knives and a hatchet. Except for one knife, a Grizzly, all the other knives and the hatchet are OK. I even sent the Grizzly from Germany to Bark River at my own expense to fix the faults and they didn't it right. I then fixed most of the faults myself, e.g. on the handle scales. The knife works perfectly, but such faults are simply unacceptable.

I have 2 bark river knives and 1 came with the wrong handle material.. I asked for black paper micarta with mosiac pins and got maple with brass pins and my other one came with the right material but the ironwood burl was completely cracked and the glue wasn't adhered properly. I have a video on my KZbin of it and its worse than you might think

My first Bark River ever was a pre-order and it came with similar issues as the one you got. I had mostly the edge issues after minor use. After quite a few strop sessions - it seems to be fixed. This a been a few years ago now. At the end of the day... You shouldn't have to mend something you spent that much on out of the box even if you can; some people can't.
