Question for all the bushcrafters out there: Why are knife handles getting so ridiculously thin these days? Doesn’t this bother anyone else? I mean, sure, the knife might look stunning, but that handle looks like it’s barely 25 mm tall (1 inch). How is something that thin supposed to be comfortable for heavy-duty tasks? A full-tang knife with a 4 mm spine is clearly built for serious work, yet the handle design doesn’t match. I’ve made a personal rule: no more knives with handles under 30 mm (1.18 inches or 1-3/16 inches) in height. Thin handles make your hand tire out faster because you have to grip harder just to hold them securely. Just look at Mora knives: they’ve got those chunky, ergonomic handles. Or Ray Mears knives-same story. Am I seriously the only one who feels this way?!
@hendrikgarnkaufer69383 күн бұрын
Nope, I feel the same. Thus is why I like the Böker Bronco for example in principle, but the handle kills it for my paws. Best handle so far for my hand still is the Casström Lars Fält.
@gpietra3 күн бұрын
@@hendrikgarnkaufer6938 Really? That one looks pretty thin too. I’ve never really considered it because I think it’s made by Joker, and their Bushlord is basically the same knife but cheaper, if I’m not mistaken. I already own a Joker knife-the Ember-but I never use it because the handle is too small, and my hand gets tired quickly. The Bushlord’s handle seems a bit taller, but I’ve never had the confidence to take the risk and buy it for that reason.
@hendrikgarnkaufer69383 күн бұрын
@@gpietra Talking to Casström at IWA in Nürnberg two years ago, Joker hasn't done work for them due to quality inconsistencies for quite some time iirc so when Joker released the Bushlore, a lawsuit was threatened by Casström. I can't tell you the exact dimesions of the handle right now but it is the knife with the most voluminous handle I own. Whether it is beefy enough for you I can't say but iirc it is below the 3 cm in height that you mentioned as your optimum. Compared to the Bronco it is worlds apart and for my 9-10 sized hands, it is pretty perfect. I also own the Ursus 45 from Whiteriver that I also like a lot but that could use a bit more heft in the handle. I have yet to use the Ember, just know the pics, but I'd expect the handle to work in comparable fashion to the Bushlore/Lars Fält so I guess your caution of trying it out is warranted.
@gpietra2 күн бұрын
@@hendrikgarnkaufer6938 Surely handle height is just one of the factors involved, maybe I would find the Lars Falt knife handle comfortable. Thanks for your inputs! I think knife manufacturers are too often pursuing the aesthetics of a slicker handle than true comfort in field use, sadly.

As an American, I have noticed we definitely as a whole have larger hands. I find the Casstrom Woodsman to have a nice handle. Large/Long enough to be comfortable, while not making it heavy are huge on your side. The Mora Garberg has the circumference that I wish all knives had. But just not in plastic. That’s why it’s the Roselli Hiemo UHC for the win! For me anyhow. I have your DBK knife from BPS. It has a very small handle. I feel my hand width of 4” is averaging on the larger side, but not too badly. I find a lot of handles are too short. Forcing my hand into a three finger grip. The measurement used is not the actual usable area between the finger guard and beak. It’s on both far ends of the area your hand actually sits. That’s not the information we need to measure if our hands fit that particular handle. With so much shopping being done online, we can’t exactly put our hands on them first can we? That measurement needs to be added.

Love the initiative to create a more affordable DBK knife. Admirable. Have to be honest though; for the knife plus shipping to the US it is almost $170. I'd have a hard time justifying that considering I have multiple other knives in that size/role already. My Mora Bushcraft Black has similar dimensions/role and has great quality, but only costs me $58 shipped. Of course the DBK knife has a nicer sheath and the steel on the DBK knife holds an edge better, but not sure it's worth almost three times the price better. But hey I love that you continued on the quest, and if I didn't have so many other fixed blades already (partly your fault LOL) that fit that role, I'd likely buy your knife.

It‘s just funny that your „budget“ knife seems to come with a better sheath than the „deluxe“ model. 😊 (My DBK sheath was so tight that I couldn‘t get the knife back in and the stitching was off. Not a dealbreaker by any means, but compared to the Böker it‘s a bit …well… sad. ) P.S.: Not your fault. I also have the old TRC Bushcraft which had the same „cheap“ leather sheath.

You guys got me twice somehow! I just ordered a Fallkiniven A1x after watching your videos as the first “modern” high quality knife with a convex grind I will own. This was a lot of money for a Christmas gift to myself, but ohh well. I laughed at your videos of how you dreamed of owning a “Rambo Knife” as teens. I did the same, and you will laugh to know that I carried a Buck Master as my knife in the US Marines during Desert Storm. There was no internet or you tube then, so you had nothing but catalogs to look at. Since I’ve been carrying the Cold Steel SRK carbon steel and some cheaper Moras (craft line blue handle my favorite). So I also wanted to get a garberg and was still deciding carbon or stainless when I started watching this video. The second I realized the knives were released I went to the DBK shop and put one in my cart. I forgot I had other stuff in there that didn’t justify the shipping rate to USA, but didn’t care, wanted to order before they could sell out. As I’m hurriedly paying for the order I hear the part of the video saying “Oh noooo, I think they made it too sharp and it’s going to chip!” And I was like Whaaaat? Maybe I should have watched the video first! lol, now that I have, I am glad I ordered one, even though I have now spent twice as much on myself shortly before Christmas. If the handle is too thin I’ll wrap it in hockey tape, that is like Canvas Micarta isn’t it?

The knife really looks nice, and for the price, its a good deal. Especially with 80Crv2 steel. However, its made by Böker, who IMHO don't have the heat treat set up well. I had two Böker knives in 1095 (Scandi grinds 55 -58 HRC ) where the pretty thick tips broke off (both accounts were digging out an arrowhead in soft, wet pine wood), in both cases I had to regrind and create new tips, then guess what....sometime later the tips broke again! A friend of mine has the Böker Bronco in CPM 3 V (59 HRC) and her tip also broke off and also had to regrind! And that was CPM 3V! And now with your knife, the tip broke. But okay, its dialed up to 60-61 HRC . After these episodes, I just don't trust Böker made knives anymore. Though your knife held up somewhat on the edge, that could be that Böker paid a bit more attention on the first production batch. So sorry guys, I won't be buying this one (irrelevant now anyway as they are all sold out). I prefer to save and wait for the DBK in Magnacut made by TRC.😁 (when will they be back in stock again BTW?). Sorry if I have spoiled some potential sales for you though. But thanks again for a great video, as always, and have a great weekend! P.S. Ever thought of getting Brisa or NKD to build for you? Their builds and heat treat are awesome. Slightly more expensive but worth it. Have a Trooper and Forester in 80Crv2 and beat them to death weekly and they still hold up fine, just a bit of work with a ceramic rod and strop now and again (I guess I bit like Mickie and his *****, he is constantly beating it and stropping it, me thinks) 😂

Hi guys, What’s the thought behind the ‘2000’ in the knife’s name? Sounds somewhat (19)90’s!😅
