It doesn’t really matter. She emphasises how “small” it is several times. She demeans it as a kids sippy cup. Then the shock at $125 does end up saying it’s not worth $125. That together with the mentions of it being tiny does have the direct effect of saying it’s not worth it.

I get so annoyed with people complaining about people copying their crafting ideas. If you don't want your work replicated, don't post it online. There is very little that people won't be able to figure out or reverse engineer from pictures especially when it comes to knit and crochet. When I post pictures of cross stich pieces that I've designed, I fully expect that someone will try to replicate it, whether I ever hear about it or not, and I don't care. Crafting is a community effort. Everyone learns from someone else, and the evolution of the craft is from the sharing of information.

idk i think that soph girl is right to get irritated at shelby for making a “response” video. in soph’s original video she said nothing bad about the mug and more focused on the fact that she wasn’t paying attention to the price until she was given the total, and at that point she felt too awkward to back out. she waited in a long line just to look at the shop and probably felt like waiting all that time would have been for nothing if she didn’t just go through with the purchase. that’s happened to me before (albeit not $125 for a mug!!!! that’s crazy lol but i obvi don’t have influencer money like her) and i just take the l and continue with the purchase. she didn’t name the shop or even say that anything was wrong with it, just that she didn’t realize there were two handles and she was embarrassed at how much she spent on it just to avoid an awkward situation. i think that shelby took it too personally and blew it out of proportion by making it a personal attack against her and her business. also not for nothing but it seemed like she went out of her way to garner as much sympathy as possible and try to look like a victim of bullying or something when really she inserted herself into a complete non-issue. she got her money and sold a piece, idk what the issue is!!

With the mug drama, you have a very interesting take. I think the problem isn’t she bought a mug without knowing the price, soph didn’t make fun of the mug. It’s a stereotypical gift haul and from the 7 mins of the video, the cup is a tiny portion where she said she didn’t know who to gift it to because it’s small and she made a passing comment about the price, never saying it isn’t worth it. Shelby imo overreacted because soph never said the business she bought the mug from, or discredited their work. So it’s fascinating how snarky your take on soph is. Like it’s a messy story but it’s just a case of she said she said but using the the initial video as the “trigger”, Shelby’s response seems slightly unwarranted because no critique was made towards her business. If anything the initial video can just be chalked down to Soph’s interesting spending habits but beyond that, what I got from her video was she couldn’t figure out who to gift the mug to 🤷‍♀️

@@rainyyyyyyy648 slip casting is still quite the process!! molds can be tricky to store, care for, and work with, and the amount of losses you can have throughout the process is pretty high. getting a uniform look is also unexpectedly tricky in a multi piece uniform collection. not only that, but after the pieces are demolded you have to then go through several rounds of smoothing the piece in different ways. also, even if the design is on the simpler side, it’s still all hand painted and designed!! i agree throwing and slipcasting aren’t the same process by any means, but both are difficult processes imo!!

No entirely in my opinion. Ive heard a few disabled creators talk about how most accessible cups for adults with disabilities often are just sized up sippy cups with very kiddish designs. While i think that specific mug is definitely too thin for it to really be a good mug for one with a disability, there are creators who make ceramic mugs specifically for different disabilities! I can't remember their name, but I do remember their mugs were for sure bigger and looked much thicker and stable to actually accommodate someone. Plus they look like actual mugs and therefore have the "dignity" title since they less resemble childrens cup.

Normally I really do enjoy your videos, because you mostly keep to the facts and get straight to the point. But you seemed to be really misinformed about the mug situation. Soph posted her video in December, and it was meant as a haul for Christmas. Her 7-minute video started with her talking about the mug for about 30 seconds, and that's it. She said she never saw the other handle, didn't realize that it was 125 Dollars, and because it was already wrapped, she felt too bad to back out at the last second. Yes, she ranted a bit about its size, but she never mentioned Shelby or her business in any way. To be honest, it's okay if she felt the prize was too much for the size of the mug. Some people wouldn't mind it, others do. It's subjective. Nevertheless, Shelby answered about 1-2 months later with her video and she did come off quite condescending. Again, Soph never mentioned her name nor the name of her business. No one would have known it was about her. She made it sound like Soph was complaining about the mug for the majority of Soph's haul video/tiktok (which wasn't true). I also don't believe that Shelby told her long talk to every single person that day. (Someone else mentioned that she posted her video around the time of Soph's launch for her own small business, but I don't know 100% if that's true.) Now in Soph's response to Shelby, she mentions that she never talked to Shelby herself, but a brunette-haired woman. There is a photo that shows Shelby at her stall working together with two other women, one who has dark brunette hair. Another photo showed how the mugs were placed on the stall. It proved that you weren't able to see two handles on the Strawberry mug collection mugs because of how they were positioned. Soph mentioned that the stall was quite popular and that people had to wait in line to get to it. It's not too much of a stretch to believe that she didn't see the prize for the mug until she paid. Especially if it's a bit more fast paced. Overall, I can understand if Shelby felt attacked, because Soph sort of criticized the mug, but responding to the video in the manner that she did (especially months later) was quite unprofessional. I think she may have confused Soph with another blonde and they both had different interactions in their minds. As for the prize of the mug itself, I think everyone needs to make their own opinion up about it. For some people it won't be worth it, for others it would be. As mentioned before, it's completely subjective. However, knowing that Shelby uses molds and doesn't 100% make her pieces completely on her own, does make the mugs a bit more overpriced for me personally. But again, to each their own.

Went to college for ceramics and have attended SEVERAL workshops with established and respected ceramicists: that is a perfectly normal price for a piece of art pottery. I attended the largest ceramics conference in the world in 2019 and some of my favorite artists’ MUGS-yes mugs-were on sale for similar prices, if not more. Ceramics is one of the most expensive media to get into/use, the prices have to reflect that unfortunately. Buy something else if the price is too high. In fact, it’s super common for mugs to be sold from lots of different people in fundraisers at a flat rate, where each artist donates just one mug so that people can still get the pottery without artists losing a ton of profit. Sometimes there’s like a lottery system and you get a surprise mug. We come up with lots of fun ways to get our pottery to folks lol

You know that she probably made the master piece for that mold, and that it takes skill to create the right slip to make the perfect cast? That it takes skill to even make a mold? And even more skill to cast and cast and cast and they turn out good and sturdy and even thickness etc etc? I literally went to college FOR mold making and casting so you are really talking to the wrong person, LOL. And no, that’s not a “gucci mug” price and even if it was, gucci definitely mass produces any pottery they sell in a factory 😂 I literally said in my first comment that respected artists sell their mugs for those prices, AND YES, at craft fairs. 😂😂😂 you dont have to throw on a wheel for your work to be good. Lmfao. Please take just one hand building ceramics class and stay in your lane. 💀 I don’t understand where people who know nothing about making art get off on having such snobby opinions about it.

@@tacticalmisandristfellow ceramicist here, fyi, she didn’t make the mold. She got hundred of molds for (i believe for free but can’t remember, been following her for a while) on gum tree. she did not make the master mold. She slipcasts and paints them herself. Personally I don’t have an issue with the price, if people are willing to pay that much money for it, go ahead. But I do think it’s important to clarify that she doesn’t make her molds.

They'd have to constantly refill it and for many people, the handles would even be too small. Even a standard sippy cup holds more liquid than that mug and the handles are bigger. You're acting like Sophie is the party who's doing wrong, when she isn't. Like, at the display the mug was angled in a way that she wouldn't have seen the second handle, and she didn't pick it up herself because it was on the main counter. You never took into account that the second handle was literally unable to be seen. You also didn't mention it having been a mug for people with disabilities, which is at a price that makes it insanely hard for people who would benefit from it to get and makes the business owner herself look really, really bad. I respect you man, but you REALLY didn't do your research there.

Molds ARE handmade. I’d argue that mold pouring is more difficult than throwing on a wheel because it takes more time and finesse to get a good product. When you open the mold, the item usually isn’t perfect. You need to clean up edges and the seam line from where the mold pieces meet. I’m not a huge fan of this girl because of her attitude, but the process she does needs a lot of dedicated time and patience
