I feel really bad for Eagan, too, and I guess the best thing to do is to learn through what you've seen him experience. There are nutters sprinkled through all of life's paths, but don't let them extinguish you. In the long run, I think both you and Eagan will be okay, and remember that it's Grey, and not Eagan who is being regarded as the one in the wrong.

My take is this: if you are purely operating as a small indie with zero budget and you are doing it for funzies there is zero harm in that. The artist is very talented and clearly demonstrates a huge amount of skill and the usage of AI is perfectly permissible. if it's a large corporation that has the resources to hire people and cutting corners and therefore killing jobs, I totally get the pushback. that being said I don't think that the backlash was at any way warranted and the people who created the backlash should be punished for trying to stamp out the career of an artist.

It's worth repeating Eagan's concerns over asking for free/underpaid work, especially from a visual arts perspective. I studied illustration, and the number of job listings for passion projects with openly insulting and entitled expectations towards artists is through the roof. So many "visionaries" demanding mountains of art for $70 and "you'll get more once it makes me rich." Even agreeing to work for too little will get you flak from other artists for "adding to the problem." It's no wonder that the kid didn't want to assume anyone would offer him free work!

However, these old voice actors seem to have jumped at the idea of drama to stay relevant. If a voice actor doesn’t want their voice used in something, ai or not I believe this should be respected, and I think that’s fair. However comparing this to sexual assault is incredibly overselling it, and overshadows actual violation that happens in real life, AND the sexualization of public figures who are used in deep fake porn ( which nobody ever talks about. ) A lot of voice actors are against it because of fears it may put them out of their jobs, which is an understandable fear as it’s been seen some video game companies are actually considering this. Tdlr; wouldn’t recommend using someone’s image, voice, or art without their permission, but the way she acted in response was way beyond the issue.

this is what concerns me about the use of the term "consent" in regards to producing commodities ie voice recordings etc. its really not appropriate. no ethical consumption under capitalism etc. and its weird that a voice actor believes they have ownership of intellectual property enough to consent to its production or use, especially when its owned by a corporation. its just way off, politicised way too much, and individuals are getting harmed while corporations get special protection. a lot of these anti-ai people knowingly conflate the term because they know no one can criticise the consent argument without looking like a monster. its really messed up

It's probably cause voice acting isn't as demanding as most other art roles. Unless it's a really big production a lot of lines can be ready the same day and might not even need re-recording. The actual editing of the audio files isn't on the voice actors side and if it's a no budget production they wanted to volunteer for there's usually not a whole lot of lines so they can easily squeeze it into their schedule. Thats not saying voice acting isn't a talent or difficult. If your doing voices that are extremly harsh on the vocals it's definitely not easy, plus the practice and process of curating a type of voice is work in itself, but a majority of projects don't need 100% new character voices so it's a lot faster of a process. With a good sound editor you can even turn voice lines recorded over a phone call into movie quality lines. (They did that in the teen titans go movie with Stan Lee)

I've seen a lot of voice actors reasonably speak out against people using their voices through AI without consent, specially with a lot of videogame characters in which people used the vocies to create nsfw audios or say problematic things. Of course someone using a computer to make your voice say things you didn't agree to feels violating and disturbing. But that's so far from the case with a guy making a small animated movie by himself for what is clearly a one-person project done for his own enjoyment and with no comercial or ill intention. The actress has a point but she was so rash in her response, completely ignored the context and expressed her meaning so poorly that the live ig video was definitely worse than all the tweets until that point. Definitely don't think even after all the messages and backlash she understands why she's wrong. Poor Eagan, sharing a passion project made with so much obvious effort and love to be met with this :/

While I'm personally against Ai art and voices, and I understand that many voice actors have said that they are uncomfortable with people using their voices without their consent to say some pretty messed up things(I would be the same), Grey Delisle handled the situation terribly and her actions were potentially dangerous, she actively encouraged people to harass and threatened someone who was just trying to make a fun project but just made a honest mistake, even threatening to blacklist them from the industry, its a complete overreaction that's potentially destroyed her reputation for many people and studios, making herself look like a bully and its absolutely disgusting I really did looked up to her, she use to be one of my favourite voice actors and she was one of the first people to make me fall in love with voice acting, but after this and her comparing Ai voices to SA, she's lost all respect from me and many others That being said I really do respect how Eagan handled the situation. I absolutely don’t agree with using AI for projects in Hollywood. But this was a small self made creative project for fun, learning how to animate. They weren’t looking to make money off it. Plus, the voices for Scooby Doo are iconic and through every adaptation are generally the same. I personally think it was okay for them to use AI to re-create those voices for this project - especially since hiring voice actors for a personal project like this could be out of budget. What would make it not okay to me, would be if it was for profit.

@@chipkid He did, he even commented very early on that he knew it was wrong but he felt like it should be allowed because of his low budget. He knew better but chose to do it anyway. He's not sorry he did it; he's just sorry he was caught. He hasn't even taken the AI version down.
