Honestly it’s for the best. The constant confusion and secrecy that been going on regarding this game ever since they announced it is something I have also seen in Bloodlines 2, which has been similarly in development hell. The more time they take making KotOR Remake, the better.

I actually prefer that companies don't make press releases when they have nothing to announce. Just make the game and do a press release when it's done. I hate it when companies keep teasing and teasing and promising features when they're not even in the alpha stage yet. When you're making promises that early, you can bet most of those features won't make it in the game.

The problem with the High Republic is that there isn’t really any conflict that’s occurring in that era that is significant. We have the “Nile” as the antagonist but we already know that they had no major ramifications on the Galaxy as they’re never referenced in later media accomplishing anything significant which isn’t helped by the fact that they’re not interesting bad guys. The Sith are more interesting antagonists in terms concept and because they were referenced in the prequel trilogy to have once conquered the Galaxy. So there was more to explore.

I understand your point of view but at the same time I kind of disagree. KOTOR 1 & 2 need remakes. The gameplay needs to be changed and there are some story points that need to be fixed. Plus the affinity system needs to be fixed as well. Obviously keep the characters the way they are(like for example keep Saul as a male).

Given KotOR is 21 years old and has not been touched once since it's release (save for ports by aspyr) I would say it is way past due for a remake, that is too long ago for a simple remaster and the scale of the game, it's content and all locations had to be much smaller due to technical limitations. A legendary title like this deserves the best possible remake that can be done.

It’s worth remembering that the justification for Aspyr never releasing the promised DLC for the Switch port of KOTOR2 was that there was a licensing / IP dispute: “A third party objected”. That was from a November 2023 court filing, so it makes sense that they will not say the name. A few possibilities here: 1. There’s a dispute over the rights between Saber and Embracer surrounding the former’s divestiture. 2. SWTOR’s canon is directly linked to KOTOR’s, and EA is disputing every attempt to touch it - or else they want to be the publisher, as they were for some releases. (This seems like the most likely, knowing EA - it’s a money grab.) 3. There’s other projects involving the KOTOR IP, and Disney is invoking privileged rights.

Is it possible that they're going to try to cannonize the kotor events? I know they've tried for years to introduce revan and his story into the main storyline. So perhaps this is an attempt to retcon the events or outcome of kotor in order to make it fit? The aire of secrecy surrounding the remake and project overall is unsettling to me, and now they won't even say kotor? Something about this is very wrong.

Based on what I was told, even the developers weren't sure if the game was canon or not. However, a lot of the visuals were being referenced against a lot of the modern stuff. For example the Krayt Dragon was based on the Mandalorian's design etc

Not saying the name is a way to keep out of the spotlight. Especially with all the rumors there were about Aspyr and all the restructuring from Embracer. Don't need to put any more attention and heat on the project and just let the team work. Most people involved on that project, including the publishing side and leadership know that they will be crucified if it doesn't clear a very, very high standard. Smart. Also, Jason Schreier is incredible. His book Blood, Sweat, and Pixels is very good. Used it for research in undergrad. A rare journalist in the games industry who maintains a high level of professional integrity and access and is able to balance the two, while simultaneously providing relevant information in his reporting. He deserves more recognition and respect from the general gaming community.

All they need to do bare minimum is remaster the graphics, maybe add new combat system and keep legacy combat system as an optional toggle, but to me "remake" sounds like they're going out of their way to make more work than they even need to. If anything keep the original game, and add content to the older version, maybe even make the game online so that you can do online Pazaak with other players, or swoop racing online etc ported inside the game when you're at Cantinas etc, shit like that would be cool.

@FizzedAye so I think a remake isn't necessary but if done correctly then it would be amazing. A new combat system would be needed. Something similar but not too different. Needs to be refined. Doesn't baldur's gate 3 do a turn based system? I heard it's great and works so maybe it's possible in this day and age? Or perhaps something different? I don't know how woke it would be. There would probably be parts of that sprinkled in. It could be something as annoying and minor like Boba Fett not being able to say the "Slave 1" and instead has to say firespray. It's an eye rolling thing where they have to make things fit for a "modern" audience. Then again it could be as egregious as some sexism towards men as is par for the course in several Disney projects. It can't be too overt otherwise it's too on the nose and obvious. Lore changes might be made as well that might anger some fans. Depends on what they are changing. Given the track record with Disney and their star wars games this might come out mediocre at best. I don't know. We haven't seen any actual gameplay and know nothing. The game might actually be cancelled for all we know. Some online functionality for those minigames would be pretty cool. I doubt they would do that but it's a good idea.

If this game was being worked on with any conviction they'd be shouting it from the rooftops. This backwater studio probably know they wont be able to produce this game so are sitting on the license waiting to sell it to the highest bidder. In the unlikely scenario that they are actively working on the game, they clearly have no confidence in the project, and don't want to broadcast it just to later announce they couldn't hack it and tank their reputation. This is worse than nobody working on it on my opinion, as it's a blocker for a competent studio to pick it up.

I think it’s somewhat safe to guess that they can’t mention Kotor in public due to agreements with either the publisher or the IP owner giving permission. Due to the ambiguity of the publishing side, it’s possible that they keep it open ended to allow opportunity to change publishers and give more control of marketing to the publisher

Probably can't say the name because they're under heavy NDA. It's common in other industries like corporate technology. Many divestitures, joint ventures, or consulting projects even require internal conversations between those parties to use generic or code names for companies and efforts involved when you have smaller teams in the company working on it but not everyone. A lot of the time it's because it could affect stock prices if any party is publicly traded. I can't speak to any previous examples where they didn't use the direct name but Embracer is publicly traded and of course so is Disney. The Star Wars brand & Disney are well known to use heavy NDAs on their properties. If the deal isn't under NDA specifically, and I doubt some parts wouldn't be even after the announcement, then it's possible that there's an NDA agreement in the licensing deal. Especially if his response was "You mentioned a licensed name there, and I can't comment". Sounds exactly like what you'd say if you're under an NDA to me. The Deal itself 100% would've been because it would have materially affected Embracer's stock value. Plus they divested 6 other subsidiaries in 2023, so negotiations were probably all in parallel the past couple years and all under NDA start to finish.

They don't need to change or remove anything in the game, but if they do.. they can add more content if anything... Why do I feel like they're just going to change the game/plot entirely and fuck everything up. Please God don't.

It needs a remake. There are many things still broken with the game and missing content which you have to mod in. Combat needs to be fully redesigned. Animations needs to be redesigned. Cutscenes need to be redesigned. The whole game needs to be remade from the ground up. It’s a tall task and just a remaster won’t do it.

I still play the original fairly often. It doesn't matter if the remake takes until 2030, it just needs to be good. I'll keep an eye on it during development and listen to early reviews after release. If it's a quality product, it'll be worth the wait (and I'll probably still be playing it in the 2040's).

Usually, with licensing, and how the CEO mentioned "a licensed product" that indicates someone out there could be legally challenging their ownership of the license, or asking for a percentage of the profits after the game is released. And publicly confirming that they are working on a licensed game that the license is being challenged, could lead to legal ramifications. At least until they settle whatever the legal issue is, after it gets settled and all the paperwork is done, they'll probably start using the game's name. Or it could be that they're trying to keep certain details a surprise for... some reason...? But everyone already knows and has been waiting for it, so it doesn't make sense to do that. But i think it's just a legal issue with the licensing of the specific game. Not Star Wars, but KOTOR specifically.

They can't mention kotor due to legal obligations propably associated with marketing and publishing rights of the IP. Disney owns the ip and they control what can be said about it and its possibly legally bound not to talk anything tied to project before marketing roulette with publisher starts and disney says no we are going to start pushing it out.

SABER imo, is trustworthy more so than most companies, especially when it comes to being Lore accurate and respecting the fans of a game. Space Marine Also is a 3rd person game on a huge cinematic scale. Makes me very confident in their ability to give KoTor a proper revival.

There were reports that Sony wanted to pull out of the remake. But so far those have been unverified reports. I'd assume it's still going to be a PS5/PC only title.

Remake KOTOR with good UE5 graphics, modernize the combat to make it feel more action-oriented (while keeping the D&D dice rolling hidden mechanics). Do it and it will be a guaranteed success.

I mean I never expected this to come out anytime soon ever since the drama began. So to me expectations since shifted from wanting the game to being gratefull if it even comes out. One day it wont be 2024 anymore and we will be in 2026. If the game is on your shelve at that point so to speak. Thats all that matters. And I will look back with a slight smile remembering the whole drama timeline and the twists and turns we experienced on this channel and outside of it. In the end perspective really is everything in life. I can’t wait for that eventual day when I can click on a gameplay breakdown video on this channel from a reveal trailer of the Remake. Instead of these leaks, rumors and turbulent news bursts. Its all part of the larger story guys

Not gonna get my hopes up. Can't get my hopes up just to find out the game got "updated for a modern audience" . And when they needed 500 million to essentially buy themselves, I wouldn't be the slightest bit shocked if they went to BlackRock and had to ruin the game to get a favourable loan

presuming they was talking about kotor remake the fact they said that the game needs some deep love and respect deserves a round of applause for actually understanding that they cant f- it up as they know that its basically unanimous in the star wars gaming community that kotor is the best star wars game ever created to this day and that if they mess it up that they will hear those complaints clear as day whilst they look out the window at hell itself being brought to them by the community. they have so much more pressure creating the kotor remake than any other star wars game BY FAR. so the fact they want to take their time with it to give it that love and respect it deserves is very compendable of them 👏👏

Can they just give KOTOR 1 and 2 the Halo 2 Anniversary or Gears of War Ultimate Edition treatment? Same game but remastered with fully remade models and environments and fully remade cutscenes. That's all it'd take to make me happy.

even if its 2026 for the release im fine with that. The older ive gotten the faster time flies i still feel like 2024 just started and were mid way trough march. Two years is gonna feel like no time at all. More time for the development is no problem for me as this remake has had a troubled development and has much work left to be done on it and thats fine. Im not hyped im not sceptical im just pleased there is stilla life line for it and if it comes out great if it doesn't thats ok as well. AND if it suck on release thats fine the original is still gold.

I'm not really connected to SWTOR to give regular updates. But there's some great SWTOR creators out there who do! If anything MAJOR happens with SWTOR or anything KOTOR Related in the game appears (like the Mass Shadow Generator stuff) I will cover it though

At this point I wish they'll just announce they're cancelling the remake. It's been in development hell for years and clearly isn't in the hands of a company that has respect for such a beloved IP, and I'd rather the remake never came out then having an awful released one that tarnishes the original game.
