Quick tip and it is probably to late but cut the seams of the packing at a 45 degree angle not 90 degree it then provides better sealing and you could probably get away with 2 rings of packing. Also stagger the seams 90 degrees from each other. One huge red flag is if water leaks in from your rudder shaft then the stuffing box is below the water line. More vessels sink from this . Get a wooden plug tapered for the size of your rudder shaft and leave it by the rudder stock in the event you loose the rudder you can plug the hole immediately.

Next time try buying a brand new packing nut and stop using a worn one. Sooner or later the movement of the rudder stock will cause the old one to jump the thread again. I’m sure the cost of the nut is a lot cheaper than the cost of haul out. Also get a pipe that fits over the rudder stock that you can tap the seal down all the way with, an Allen key doesn’t “cut it “ excuse the pun.
@VanagonCO3 ай бұрын
It’s not the nut, it’s the threads of the female side. The threads are rusted and basically non existent at the top of the threads. The only thing I can think of is, get a bigger in diameter packing nut. Then use a bigger tap to rethread to the same size as the bigger packing nut.

I’d modify the packing nut to the style that uses two studs and nuts on the sides of the packing gland rather than the threaded style of packing gland. You get infinite adjustment. Also you can buy packing extractors in different sizes to suit the packing you have for easy removal, made by Chesterton. I’ve packed thousands of glands and modified just as many on all types of pumps in mining! I also agree with others as to cutting the packing at a 45 degree angle and stagger the joints at 180 degrees.

just get a threaded collar and weld it to the top of the packing box, there for extending the threads for your nut to grab on to and in turn could put more packing in. might have to do a little fiberglassing on the top of the rudder mount housing but it should work

You need to compress each ring of packing with a metal extension for the packing nut , then install the next ring use a shorter extension and compress it again, this is the procedure for valves used in High Pressure Steam service . The other thing you can do is get a custom new nut made on a lathe using single point treading they can make the nut just a bit bigger so it engages the threads that are there more completely. I have also seen some repairs done with a product from Belzona . They fixed a striped out tread on a generator which it in Algeria we ran it for 3 years and then it got sold on and to my knowledge never had an issue. Sorry about your engine mechanic, I did significant engineering work on 5 continents so I feel your pain promises are not what we get used to in the cultures we are from! One add you can order custom cut and preformed packing with a chevron shape that seals better , for water stick with the Teflon impregnated packing . Good luck wish I was there to lend a hand with the problems . I don’t like to see people struggle with fixes . The baby’s are growing incredibly quickly and look happy and healthy, Good on you two!

I put the first ring in, then comoress it hard with the nut, leave it for a couple of minutes then remove the nut. Then the 2nd ring & compress again with the nut, then the final ring. Often slk three full size rings will fit. As anothet commenter observed, all the cuts should be at 45⁰ and displaced by 180⁰ or 90⁰ depending on the number of rings

You want to get some body weight on that nut and packing before you start turning it so it catches. If need be take a piece of simillar diameter straigt pipe pipe and put it over the nut then put a folded towel over the end of the pipe for cushion then lean your chest on it while you tighten the bolt. You'll also be able to get as much packing as you need in there at any sizing. Your packing is not deforming enough to keep a constant seal.

If you haven't already, order a new packing nut. It looks like it is plastic (Delrin? Nylon?) and they strip threads easily. The bronze in the through hull will not lose threads, the plastic nuts do. I'm sure there is a good reason Amel used a plastic gland nut but I don't know why. My boat had a bronze nut. Lot's of other good comments already so hopefully you will solve this problem so you can get on to the next one.

Thread tape on the packing nut thread
@nickcooper143 ай бұрын
If the thread in the hull is what is wrong, you can do it the old (Thompson Pump ) way. you have enough meat in the outside diameter of the stuffing box, you can drill and tap 2x 10 or 12mm threads into the outer diameter. You will need to get a local guy to make you up a gland follower with two wings out the side that match the two tapped holes. So the follower will have the inside diameter of your rudder stock say 0.020" bigger then it will have the outer diameter of the stuffing box. this time 0.020" smaller. This then uses the two bolts to pull down the packing into the stuffing box, make the length of the follower so that it will bottom out, and so you can add an extra ring in. It is important to cut the packing on an angle and stagger the placement. You can also get packing a little fatter and hammer it flat to fit the stuffing box.. I have worked for many years working on pumps that use packing. Good luck.
@MichaelSwartz-s6m3 ай бұрын
You need to make a packing press to compress the packing without using the packing nut threads. The end of the rudder shaft has a threaded hole so all you need is a tube to fit over the shaft and inside the tube and is must be taller than the rudder shaft so you can press it down with a bolt and washer. The packing nut looks like it is just a standard nylon pipe fitting. What thread is the packing nut, in the video it looks like a tapered pipe fitting or is that how much the end of the nut is worn down. The main problem why it leaked is due to simply not having enough pressure on the packing. If it is a tapered pipe thread then that would explain your problems since you only used two layers the nut would be tight before putting pressure on the packing. If you make a compressing tool like I described you could also use that for installing the packing nut as it would allow you to press and hold the nut down as you turn it and screw it in.

I do not know your Amel, but boats sunk, because the compartment with the rudder/steering compartment have had openings to the rest of the boat. There had been problems with the rudder-shaft. That looks like a Tufnell compression nut. Useless as tits on a bull. You need to use a metal compression nut with an insulating washer and a good waterproof grease to separate the shaft and compression cone from the nut. I use a Tufnell ring with an insulation top-hat T-Shaped flanged tubular micarta or Tufnell washer. If you can not buy one, you can make one--and you can make it from nylon or polythene at a pinch, but NOT polypropylene. It is catalysed by copper. It really should be only one day's job to replace the bearings and packings on a properly installed rudder, if you have it set in a tube that goes all the a way through hull to the point at which the tiller (and yours is too short) gets fitted. My suspicion is that the rudder outer tube is leaking where it is set into the hull. Hopefully this is not the case, but it needs to be pressure tested. If this is true, then the tube has to come out and be reconditioned, or if it is excessively corroded, a new one re-epoxied into place. I use only transom hung rudders with the lower bearing bolted to a skeg and the top bearing above the waterline by as much as the deck on the poop will allow. I have used pintles but for larger vessels I only ever use a rudder tube with internal bearings of slippery elm, lignum vitae, Tufnell etc where in contact with sea water, and sealed stainless steel roller or ball bearings in the way of the tiller attachment point I also use a grease nipple at the top of the rudder tube, and can use this to force down a thin layer of water pump grease between the shaft of the rudder and the insides sides of the rudder tube and the bearings which are also able to be water lubricated if impregnated with wax or grease beforehand. I have used pintles for a stern mounted rudder for smaller vessels, and I recommend they be installed alongside any rudder shaft or on the transom with added reinforcements if necessary and when set in place they function as the mounting for the rigging of emergency steering. Self steering helps in this regard if the self steering incorporates its own separate rudder, Many pendulum systems do not--they operate the existing rudder or a trim tab affixed by locked pintles or hinges thereto. I also use only keel cooling and a dry rock-wool insulated engine exhaust vented through a shielded stern davit--but that is another story. The big killer of marine engines is salt water and heat exchangers and rubber sea water impellers that can fail at the worst possible moments and clog heat exchangers. Once was enough for me.

It looks like it was designed by Amel by simply taking a heavy duty "cap" PVC type and drilling a hole in it. IT Seriously look like that was what they did !
