First lens I buy regardless of the camera system! I had one with Canon, Sony and now Nikon the 35mm 1.4 is a beast! Super creamy deliciously smooth and buttery and savory and slow cooked and every food term you can think of! (courtesy of Peter Mckinnon) -TJ

I don’t have that one. I have the 16-35 one but am dying to own that in the future. Anyways, great lesson brother. Today you felt like a teacher. Very great teaching. Can you do a video explains and showing how you setup your lights. I got much to learn in regards of that and although I know you talked about it on the Peter Pizza episode, it would be nice to see more of that. Thank you for the inspiration brother. Take care and never stop!

I found myself shooting zooms almost exclusively for 3-4 years (an 18-50 PL and a 50-150 PL - shooting RED) and my primes (18, 25, 35, 50, 85, 100, 300) were sitting in their cases... unloved. Recently I kicked my own arse out of it's funk and started shooting primes more and more. Love the results; I think because it slows me down, makes me consider the shot more closely, and plan. Planning is huge when shooting food. Zooms have a place - but not every shot.

I'm on a cropped sensor camera (T6i). My favorite lens is the EF 85mm 1.8. (On my cropped sensor, it's like a 135mm...more or less.) I *like* that it forces me to think about what will go into the shot.

People always say the best lens is the 50mm because it mimics the way our eyes see naturally. But when I got my hands on a 35mm. I fell in love. I finally had a lens that looked right to me. The 35mm is the best overall lens for me!!! I love your images!!! Great video!!!
@DennisThePrescott6 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! And agreed. I love 50mm, and use them often, but there's something about the versatility of a 35mm that is just fantastic. Not to mention the beautiful quality of the images :)

A very cheap but underrated prime lens alternative would be the 40mm F2.8 pancake lens. One of my go to lens.

50mm so far I love it. I am shopping for the next piece of glass. Now I will look at this one too. Thank you Dennis.

I'm really feeling the pull back to primes. I've been shooting zooms because of the wide range of shots I need to get, and produce quickly. Having said that, practicing with primes really gets you engaged with the story. I've recently been keeping my zooms at particular focal lengths to have me work the scene. There's also a look to primes which I love... Trouble is my list of primes I'd like to have it's a big chunk'a'change.. Have recently tried out the new 85 1.4L IS, and it's gorgeous... Me and my buddy are going to shoot my 85 1.2 along side the 1.4, to see the differences. Anything which makes you move and engage in your photos is a great thing. Great advice, now stop tempting me to buy new glass... ;) Cheers JT

Hold onto your wallet :) Appreciate the kind words. And I hear you. I use a 24-70 and a 16-35 often, especially when travelling. There's just something special about primes (especially for print, in my world). 85 1.4 is a BEAST lens. So good.
@JonathanThompsonStoryteller6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I hear you for print. I shoot for Art Culinaire Magazine in Europe. So I'll ask around for an upcoming shoot in London, see if I can borrow a 35 just to see ;)

Hey Dennis... great stuff as always! I really appreciate the way you and the Canada crew (Pete, Matti, Teppo, Chris, Alen) share as much as you can with everyone. Hey Dennis. I bought the 100 macro based on your other video. I barely use it now because of space issues. I pretty much use a 24mm pancake for my flat lays now with a crop. Love how light it is. Still trying to develop my own style. Thanks!
@DennisThePrescott6 жыл бұрын
Hear ya for sure. The 1 draw back of a 100mm macro is if you’re shooting in a tight space, it can be challenging (especially on a crop sensor camera). Still super (unmatched) for close up images, of course. Haven’t tried that 24 pancake - heard great things tho

Great videos Dennis! Yeah, my 35 f2 prime has been my favorite all around travel and street lens for a years. Its great to get food shots while traveling light and mine lets me focus in very close as well. My other favorite prime is the 85mm great for portraits. A lot of times I'll just take these two lenses when doing travel and street stuff, with the 35 as the default on the body.

Great video Dennis. I'm really curious to try one of these out. The only prime I use currently is a nifty 50 on an 80d. I haaaate how far away from things you need to be, maybe a 35 is the ticket... Or a full frame camera 😅

There is. Your options are: used or refurbished Canon 35mm f/1.4L mark I (still an awesome lens), Sigma 35 1.4 Art (if you get an AF consistent sample or copy, you win, it’s unbelievably sharp), Canon 35 f/2 IS USM or the cheapest option: a used canon 35 f/2 (old model, not usm)
