Honestly, the whole POINT of Sonic is to be unabashedly the platonic ideal of "what every 8 year old things is peak coolness, and also most young adults who are just really tall 8 year olds" Also, his first line SA2 is even MORE peak, imo: he just broke out of military police custody, and the only thing he has to say to them? Make a joke about the crappy airline service, letting them know he could have left at any time, he just figured he'd humor them for a bit until the ride got boring

9/9/99 buyer here: nah, that kind of slang was distinctly early 90s. Zoomers might not know, but we used to have discreet cultural eras and 99 was techno-futurist “end of history” vibes (ironically ended up being true in the most monkey’s paw fashion imaginable). It didn’t seem weird from Sonic because most Americans grew up with the Steve Urkel voiced cartoon which WAS extremely early 90s vibes.

In this presented case, I would say this is valid and lines up with the character. However, many modern "localizations" aren't doing this while trying to pretend they are. Many localizers either sneak in or really ham-fist their socio-political views or slang where it doesn't fit the context at all. All while they act like the arbiters of what the intent and meaning of the content should be.

@@OtakuUnitedStudioGlad that more people are realizing this. There have definitely been times when localizers change something that they shouldn't have, but more often than not localizers are doing their jobs perfectly. And yet some people will still get mad because the translation wasn't one to one, not understanding that that's pretty impossible without sounding unnatural. The goal is to simply translate the meaning and vibe that the original writer wanted to convey, while also sounding natural to the audience that you're translating for.

@@OtakuUnitedStudio To be fair, LLMs can understand subtext and nuance, that's exactly why someone could at all realistically even argue for it being used for translation or localization. But localization is a creative process, a form of art. So even if or when AI gets good enough to consistently deliver relatively adequate localization with character nuance and all, it's not a job that should be automated, cause it takes away from the potential of it being elevated even higher. Not to mention it takes away jobs from people who studied and worked towards making these things, without creating any new ones in return for them.

I think a lot of the younger people complaining assume that he literally means something is happening, and thus think the line is meaningless or at least equate it with bad movie dubs from the 70s that narrate the action. I always thought that Knuckles line was referring to Eggman knocking out Sonic and Tails with sleeping gas to take their Emerald earlier. During Knuckles' story, you can see them lying around in front of the casino and if you interact with them, Knuckles says "I wonder what these guys are doing." I always thought that after the fight, he finally pieced together that this odd situation from earlier must have had something to do with Eggman (who he also ran into at the casino, it's putting two and two together at that point) and asks Sonic about it to deflect from his own mistake. Eggman also tricked them before that by letting them think they beat the Egg Hornet only to swoop in and still take the Emerald. Unlike the casino, this is not a situation Knuckles knew about, but Eggman's whole shtick in that particular game is duping the heroes and then swooping in to take their Emeralds. So Knuckles saying "Me? What about you?" and "Like you weren't!" when questioned about being tricked isn't actually that unreasonable of an accusation to throw back at Sonic, even if Knuckles is deflecting.

I never really thought the line was odd, I always interpreted it as Sonic had been looking for something interesting going on to get involved in (possibly to fight off some boredom) and declaring he found something finally/found where the action is given all the cop cars rushing by with his exclaimed line.

I remember reading somewhere that this line is also a small nod to the fans that were waiting for a full 3D jump of sonic, since the saturn never really got it's 3D sonic.

We need more content creators in the Sonic community who actually understand what makes the Japanese roots of the character so appealing and can break it down like this. It’s undeniable that Sonic Team gave the series a Western spin but it’s that balance that made the series successful and something more fans should learn more about. Great job

@lemon5000-tj6nv No. The problem with Shadow's translation is that you legitimately cannot tell what the game is trying to say at times because the grammar doesn't know wtf it's doing. It leads to stuff like Shadow feeling the need to point out he's fine with taking candy from babies when the intended meaning is more likely him being fine with an easy job. Any native English speaker (aka the target audience of this translation) would have known to at least omit the "which is" to avoid directly linking the "Fine by me." remark to the candy-baby comment, but the translators of that game evidently weren't fluent enough in spoken English to catch this. It's not just that one line either, it's a consistent problem with this translation. Colors doesn't have that problem. I know exactly what the characters are saying, the writing itself just isn't funny. Also I'm pretty sure the English version of that game WAS the original and the Japanese translation went out of its way to remove some of the cringier lines. Heck, even the German subtitles reworded certain lines to be more sincere. The translators in that one knew what they were doing, it's just that the lines they had to work with actually were that weird. TLDR: Me not liking the writing in a certain translation of a game is a completely different can of worms from me having to squint at certain lines trying to decipher wtf is going on because the translators' English isn't good enough to get the necessary information across without confusion.

"Great, I'm feeling good!" would have been a much worse and more awkward sounding line than "Aww yeah, this is happening!" I'm glad they changed it too.

Sonic speaking English in the Japanese version is really interesting! To me it gives off the impression that English is his first language so he uses it sometimes when he feels a strong emotion or something like that.

This is so well done and the modern translation of this line would have been "Oh yeah let's go!!!" "Oh yeah I'm feeling it!" Regardless intentionally or not they landed on an iconic line.

I think what makes it silly is that Sonic just kinda said that line for no reason. Like he dropped outta the sky and expressed his excitement when nothing has really happened. What I think could "fix" the scene is if during the establishing shot of Station Square we see the police cars first rushing across the street, implying something terrible is happening. Then the camera pans to the rooftops and Sonic enters the scene (in all his descending from heaven glory). He spots the police and then says the iconic line: "Aw Yeah! This is happening." Not only would this give Sonic a contextual reason for saying the line, but also highlight his cool attitude because even when there's trouble happening he can't help but feel excitement.

Ryan Drummond is the best Sonic voice actor imo, and ive never understood the disdain for this line. Sonic is peak when he blends cool WITH cheese, and i can't imagine a better first line than this. Late 90s/early 2000s American slang is all i want out of my blue brother

Honestly stuff like this is why I prefer SA1's translation to SA2's. While SA2 tried and failed to do a literal translation (see "Teriaaaa" or "Is that what Chaos Control is?"), SA1 took the opportunity to localize the writing for the audience. They even added details like Sonic and Tails's stories having slightly different lines (where they were the same in the Japanese version) to differentiate how they saw the events and the other characters.

As a kid, I also read this line as indicating that nothing was happening before this. Sonic was bored and now gets to find a life of excitement. I think we can also see some of this with Amy’s introduction. To me, it indicates that the characters had fallen into a kind of normalized routine But now they get to go on a true adventure.
