As a wildlife biologist, I've been surrounded by turkeys, dragging their wingtips over my toes, and sitting on my knees. Also have had several rattlesnakes crawl over my (booted) feet. Also had three raccoons all around me, pulling them selves up my pants legs. Been close enough to a large (>40 lb) bobcat to touch it, and several weeks later met the same bobcat on a forest trail about 1/2 mile from our previous meeting. This time he had a large squirrel that he dropped at my feet, and I handed it back to him. Had both red and grey foxes come close enough to sniff my shoes. Had a troop of wild hogs surround me, pushing and shoving to get close. Love the great outdoors!

@@darrinbunston5932, one morning, I came around a dense mass of brush, and found myself about 15-20' from a large black bear. I would estimate him at 350-400 pounds. I think we were both surprised, because both of us froze. The bear moved first, standing and sniffing. Then he dropped to all fours and went away from me, lost sight of him at about 45 yards from me. I surprised myself by not feeling any fear, just a happy encounter in the woods. That afternoon, I came across a very large sow feral hog, that I estimated at about 500 lb. She was HUGE! And that time I honestly felt fear, a true "fight or flight" moment. She had not seen me, however, and went merrily on her way. It was obvious from her belly that she had either recently given birth, or was about to. I was busy looking for a tree to climb! Feral hogs are some of the worst animals to come across, they don't seem to have any fear, or respect, for humans. I truly miss the days when, working, I would spend 10-12 hours a day, sometimes 6 or 7 days a week, out in the "wild". Been medically retired now for 13 years; it took about four years before I quit getting up and dressed at 5:30 every morning. And nowadays, I just hurt too much to walk more than about 25 yards or so. Got a fenced in back yard because I can no longer walk my Service Dog.

Brandon, it is sad. However, think on this: There was a time, back in the early part of this century (the first decade), when I visited my mother, who was still alive and living in the Laguna Hills are in Orange County, California. She was renting a condo. apt. from a friend. There was, at that time, a big problem with hyenas roaming freely around the area. Many people living there were elderly and had small pets: mostly dogs, but some cats. There were several instances where hyenas, seeing leashed dogs being walked by their owners, literally leaped up, approached the poor little dog, grabbed it, and started to eat it while running a way with the leash still attached. @honeybunch57652 жыл бұрын
But these were shot in the "wild" I do not understand what you are saying, in SA the majority of wildlife are fenced in, that is the only way we see them. The parks are huge and gives you a feeling of not being in captivity but our wildparks needs lots of management to keep these animals in these parks. You know animals habitats are small and limited to these parks, Im South African too and I've lived and traveled throughout Africa and have been to some wonderful wildparks in our country and throughout Africa. South Africa is the only country where you will not find animals outside these parks or wildlife farms excluding primates, monkeys, buck and leopards. Tourism is all that keeps these animals alive, look at the national parks in our country, the government is not subsidising them as before, that is why they brought in those commercial restaurants and gave land for private lodges. These photographers are more than acceptable but I agree with you the canning and poaching is not, same as the chumming of sharks for cage diving.

Keeping one's composure when a wild animal such as a big cat or brown bear sits beside you whilst taking photos is truly a gift just one wiff of fear in the air or one panicked movement and no doubt the animal might attack ...although I'd love to be up close to such animals I'm pretty sure my heart would be in my mouth as I'd be so terrified yet at the same moment I'd be in shock and awe at being in the presence of such an animal..
@stinkycheese8042 жыл бұрын
Meh not so much. You don't have the fear if you went out there cognizant of the potential they have, so you have an effective means of self defense (whether weapon or buddy system) so by default you don't have the same level of fear and you aren't retreating like prey would. It is not so different when dealing with humans. If someone retreats you instinctively think you have the upper hand while if they stand their ground, not so much.

As cute as these wild animals are, some of the footage and pictures you are showing are from professionals who work with these animals on a daily basis, and therefore are misleading to the public who might be stupid enough to try some thing like petting a wild animal!! I have been lucky enough to work with large cats at an animal sanctuary, had experiences with orcas and dolphins, as well as an experience with a full grown adult male alligator who was raised from a hatchling, and and all cases I was still working with wild animals!! Even captivity or being raised by humans does not change them completely, and there will always be a wild or unpredictable nature to them. I highly suggest that people do not try anything stupid that could cost you your life, or your Health & safety! I am now disabled with multiple sclerosis, and even though most of the time my symptoms are not active, I would not put myself in those same situation as I once did, because one wrong move, and that’s it!! Kevin Richardson has spent a good chunk of his life studying hyenas, lions, panthers, jaguars, cheetahs. He has a sanctuary where he is part of a hyena pack, part of a lion pride and close friends with some panthers. He has spent DECADES developing relationships with these animals. They love him, he loves them. HOWEVER....he always studies their moods and body language. He never pushes himself on them if they don't want him there. He is respectful of their boundaries and inter pack structures. They are all individuals, with their own quirks and foibles. Kevin KNOWS. He has survived because he knows when to stop petting, he knows when to head for the fence gate. As close as he is to them, he never forgets what they could "accidentally " do to him in a few seconds of anger.

I do love seeing God's gifts to us. Unfortunately there are many horrible times when people are vicious to God's animals. To show them love and trust in humans puts them at risk for those who want to abuse or kill them. Elephants are abused by people that are supposed to praise them in their relugion. Animals are killed for some " cure " that will make a person " healthy ". I don't know how to protect animals from those people that will be harmful. I do feel however, that allowing them to feel safe with humans isn't good in the long run. Unless, animals are much smarter than the rest of the human population and can sense when the humans approaching are not safe for them to be around.

I got him in and jumped in the truck. I know if I had shown fear and made any sudden moves we would have been in serious trouble. We lived to tell about it 27 years later.

So true they are just the apitomy of massive solid muscle and I have seen so many shows where they tollerate us if we do no harm they do not seem to be too concerned...they must know we are the disgusting animals who killed their population. It seems animals unlike we are lead to believe are similar to us unless you threaten, make them feel threatened or they are hunting they are not prone to needless violence. They also seem to have a great memory and loyalty if they are done a good deed and even care for other animals. Funny as we find out more and more things are not quite as we were told usbeing far smarter and more civilised, caring, emotional and superior in every way to everything else yet as it turns out we dont have a clue really whats in an animals mind until shit happens and we find out. They are nothers, fathers and children and same as us will fight to protect, care for and nurture! But the Gorillas ...if I did have the nerve to sit and bow my head like they say ...still mY SHIT MYSELF!
@viviankilloran3852 жыл бұрын
I saw the full report of that encounter. The man sitting is not a professional photographer. He had helped raise the gorilla and the young woman in the video was a small girl at the time. Years later the man and daughter returned to where the gorilla had been released. The gorilla recognized them and brought his family to meet the man.

Animals can feel our energy. They know who to be friendly with and who to eat.
@margochristensen74402 жыл бұрын
I respectively disagree. Its not that simple. The concept of perceived 'energy' by an animal can very well be just an anthropormorphism on our part. Animals are hard wired. A hungry lion in the wild doesn't care if youre a good person who loves animals or just an edible treat. I've had pets all my life and I sincerely loved them. But I had respect for them too. a few BS stories accompanies these. Kevin Richardson raised the Hyena, so it was no threat, the wolves were in a pen and were used to people. The lemurs were in a zoo and the brown bear story was true if not exaggerated. The bear came across a person sitting in an observation area overlooking Alaskan Brown bears feeding on salmon and briefly sat there also observing the other bears, then got up and left. The person in the chair handled the encounter perfectly and calm and verbally cued the bear when it got up to leave.

The number of elephants, rhinos, etc., that have been moved to "protected" conservation areas is huge. In doing so, some have become (for the most part) used to humans since they're monitored so closely. And the gorillas? Jane Goodall...pretty sure the families she co-habitated (?co-habitated?) with have passed the acceptance on down. That being said (or droned on and on about) I'd be WAY too polite (aka: not ready to die yet) to encroach in their space. The pics really are beautiful, though. Can we at least acknowledge that? Maybe? Even if it's done begrudgingly? 😁
