I sold cars for Toyota when this model came out. I quit before we got a manual model in. But I got to test drive the xse automatic, it’s pretty impressive as well for what it was. It just pulls through the gears with no shift feel, just watch the speedo climb. Definitely a must try for us hardcore manual enthusiasts. Also new for me was that dynamic radar cruise w/ intelligence (I think that’s how it’s called). Only on the corolla. You set the cruise control, take your hands off the wheel. (I know not safe and feels totally weird). And exit the highway. Make sure it curves to the left or right a bit. It will follow the car in front of you braking while maintaining lane control. Strangest thing. Then it will scream at you to grab control of the steering wheel. Enjoy!

It’s funny, i’m a fan of your channel and never realized you reviewed my car! I’m an old dad now but used to rock many GTi’s in my past. I purchased one of these back in 2019(loved that it was assembled in Japan, I feel like that adds to the value). I wasn’t really looking to buy a car but I test drove one and loved it. My SCE was one of the first off the boat when this car arrived. I got my XSE for 22k and for that price it’s way undervalued for what you get. Assisted drive, CarPlay, heated seated, great looks and the wheels aren’t lame but the interior is subtle and looks a lot closer to a Lexus. I love that you seemed to really enjoy it. ❤️🤘🏼🤓

2019 XSE Corolla owner here - yes I have the CVT. But, I had been driving a 6-speed 2011 VW GTI in Boston traffic for many years totaled by a falling branch :-(. Rowing the gears may be great on back roads, but in busy stop and go it's annoying. That and the adaptive cruise control is only really functional at low speeds with the CVT. Have no fear, I'll own another manual sometime in the future. And I still love my little Corolla.

Another great review Sarah! As you pointed, this Corolla is a perfect platform for some performance parts. Seeing what Toyota just did with their 2020 GR Yaris if they give us a GR Corolla hatchback with a manual transmission (and get rid of those fake exhaust tips) this would quickly make it to my short list right up there with the Honda Civic Type R and Hyundai Veloster N. I could spend my money and be glad doing so for and a car that potentially had all that performance with Toyota quality and all under warranty. Also, you are right, not every car needs to have the back seat space of a mini-van because I know I do not want to drive around with the size and performance characteristics of a mini-van. Keep up the great work!

Great review. I've been considering one of these off and on as a daily, but hearing comments like the engine sounding a bit like a 4AGE as well as feeling like it has some of that '80s Toyota DNA is definitely steering me toward buying my first new car. Especially when those remarks come from a fellow SW20 owner who understands the feel and the soul these classics have. It might not be the Alltrac resurrection that the GR Corolla will likely be, but I already have the original Celica Alltrac so I'm fine with an economical FWD daily. :D
@stephenhendricks1034 жыл бұрын
Big fan of hatchbacks here. And Toyota builds an attractive one. Very little chance that they'll offer a turbo or an AWD version, though. Toyota's principal object is to maintain a high level of reliability for their vehicles, especially for the Corolla, and anything that threatens it will never never make it into production. So be satisfied with a manual transmission. Toyota sells so many Corollas for the world market that they can afford to build MT versions and designate a few for the North American market.

I was watching an older video where you're working on your TT, I highly highly highly recommend you invest in a lowprofile floor jack that has a high lift height. This will be incredibly useful when you're working by yourself. I had to replace the rear differential in my E46 last spring and if I hadn't purchased that floor jack, there is no way I could've done the job myself. Differentials are heavy :/ I realize they are around $250 but it's sooooo worth it.

Really balanced, insightful review Sarah. Yes, this puppy is a tad slow, but, with better tires, it corners. I have the 2019 XSE and immediately discarded those AVID GT tires for some Goodyear Eagle Exhilarate. Vastly improved in the rain, less understeer, great dry handling, and a little more feedback in that over boosted steering while still giving a comfortable ride. Although the Sport 4S tires would be nice too. I suspect the tires were the reason for the poor stopping, at least comparing specs. That's been my experience so far. Steering feel is still a little too light for my tastes. Black out those fake exhausts, fold down the useless back seats, and its a fun little two-seater with a big cargo area. It will get a better engine someday. That chassis is way over-designed for the current engine. I think Toyota lifted the engine/CVT from the sedan (even though the hatch came out first) and spent all the design money on the body. Thanks for the review.

I’ve the 2019 version. The manual was hard to find but is so much better than the CVT in terms of engine drone that the search was worth it. Totally agree with the review. I like the colour & the way it presents itself as a ready to mod car. I wonder if that engine & transmission would fit into a Toyota Yaris? Even normally aspirated that engine in a Yaris would be quick. A turbo model as an option would be fantastic. As a daily around town with a few mods, I'd love it. The real only downside I see is the cost of headlights if they get damaged. Current Toyotas have very expensive headlights.
