We were up there last week, absolutely incredible to get that close. We stayed in Port Union for a couple of nights out of our 15 night trip. Back in the UK now 😢

Did you get a chance to take in the story of Port Union? It may not be as breathtakingly beautiful as some of the other spots around the island, but that town is incredibly important to Newfoundland’s history and I dont feel like it is very well known, even amongst Newfoundlanders

@@mark_royle_newfoundland We visited the museum in the old railway station and learnt an amazing amount about the history, not only from the exhibits but also the lady curator. Didn't get to the factory, although we had a good walk around the town.

Great spot I’d say Mark………been to Bonavista but missed Eleston……….this was years ago. Great display of the community.

Thank you. I hope you can get back there to see it. I feel like a lot of people might miss Elliston because it is literally right next to Bonavista and Bonavista is incredible, but it is definitely a place that everyone should visit.

I loved seeing the puffins so much! I went on a Whale Watching tour with Gatherall's in Bay Bulls a year ago with my father. We were there just at the beginning of the season and there weren't many whales to see but the birds were so abundant and amazing!! We went by the island where they were all nesting and it was wall to wall birds. I mostly remember all the puffins and other birds that were flying around and around the ship. It was just so cool. I was shocked at how little the puffins were. I think in my mind I had grouped them with penguins, but they are not like penguins. They are small and adorable. We did lots of driving around, Newfoundland is so beautiful and the folks are just the kindest.

Me and my family had the same kind of experience with Gatherall's last year as you and your father it seems... until the whales eventually showed up and stole the show (we went in late July). It seems like you were just visiting Newfoundland from your comment. If you get the chance to go back to Newfoundland, try to get back out on the water to see the whales. The puffins are amazing but the whales were something else!

@@mark_royle_newfoundland Yes I'd really love to come back. I originally went out to celebrate my father's 80th in May of 2023 but very sadly he passed this year in February. I stayed in Bay Bulls for a month this year before he passed (thankful to have had that time with him) and then came back to help my Step-mother for 3 months after he passed. I was ready to return home but also sad to be leaving in June just as the season was turning towards good weather and being able to experience things like seeing the whales who have always been quite fascinating to me. I can understand why my father fully fell in love with Newfoundland in the 1990's and then ended up moving there. It's beautiful and the people are wonderfully kind and generous. I'd love to visit in the heart of the season. Thanks for your show, you're an excellent ambassador with lots of great info for folks about places to see but also about history.

Thanks for sharing! We loved Elliston! The puffins are beyond belief! Another thing worth mentioning is Nanny’s Root Cellar Kitchen. A kitschy little restaurant in an historic building. Lots of fun. Limited seating and selection, but good home cooked food.

Great video! As i've said in other videos, it's sad as a Newfoundlander that i've barely left the Avalon. Bonavista looks beautiful. I've heard about them preserving and fixing up all the old salt box houses. It's good to see. As a side note... Puffins are amazing but i have to laugh that everywhere they habitat the locals act as if they only exist there. It was the same when i was in Ireland and even moreso when i was in Iceland. 😂😂 My kids do love puffins though. Where did you get that sweater? I love it.

It truly is remarkable to be able to get that close to Atlantic Puffins! They're fascinating birds, and so darned cute! I assume that many of the root cellars are in use, and not just artifacts from the past. Is it okay to just walk up to any of them and walk in to have a look (obviously being careful not to disturb anything and ensuring you secure the door when you're leaving)? Thanks for another great video, Mark!

I was told by someone who said he was a local that you could pop your head inside the door. I hope he wasn't just pranking me haha! I can't remember how many I checked out but I remember one being completely empty and one had a few vegetables sitting there. Not much to see at all, but it was still pretty neat. Also, I remember it was a HOT day and it was very cool inside the cellar, even just inside the doorway.
