In this video, I take you along for a full day at my allotment plot, where I get to work clearing out the polytunnel and prepping it for the winter season. It's time to plant garlic that will grow throughout the cold months and be ready for harvest next year.
But that’s not all-while in my shed, I discovered some unexpected visitors... mice! 🐭 Watch to see how I handle this surprise and continue working toward a productive allotment.

Fab update Gem ❤ Wow you did so much in an hour! We've been thinking of planting some garlic in the polytunnel too for the same reason. Our garlic had rust and we harvested mini garluc as a result 😂 Think yourself lucky that you have mice, could be worse ...... rats like we have on our allotment 😂 Have a great weekend ❤️ xx

Linda I would highly recommend planting garlic in the polytunnel the first year I did it, I just put the leftover cloves in to see when they would do and they did so much better than outside. From then on I've always spilt them but the outside ones aren't really worth doing 😕 that's why this year I'm only doing inside. The mice Linda they did make me jump! Well yes that's true isn't it, I'm glad they aren't rats! Have a fab weekend xxxx

There's never one mouse 😂. Your garlic cloves are HUGE, what an accomplishment! I struggle with garlic in my heat, but the elephant garlic does really well here.

@@GemInTheGarden I'm in Southeast Texas and I purchased a type of elephant garlic from a farmer in Arizona called "Lewis and Clark Garlic" that was part of that expedition and I believe was genetically tested. It perennializes here, so if I forget where I put it (a common problem 😁), it will pop back up in clusters. Its more onion-y in flavor, so I use it in a lot of soups and stocks rather than fresh.

That's great that it's a perennial, how amazing! Gardening in Texas must have its challenges and be great at the same time 😊

Isn't it crazy that we see a mouse and think how cute. But when it starts scurrying about, or there is more than one, it gets us jumpy. I react exactly the same as you, Gemma.

They are garlic gemma. I'd dig them all up and space them out, to ensure a big bulb in summer..alternatively leave them and harvest in spring as a green garlic. Beautiful! Danny 🌱

O no! We had a little mouse last winter he had a whale of a time in the shed. When emptying it in January found a pile of empty sunflower shells, he had made a back door to the shed. A full overhaul commenced old wood removed and new wood installed. Agree with "undertheumbels" quote there is never one mouse. Hope Vince gets it evicted asap, Thank you for sharing, bfn. 🐞🌻🌱

That would make me scream too! Hopefully you can get rid of them before they breed more. You can split those cloves and plant them separately if you wanted to. We are going to sow Provence and Music Porcelain but are going to wait until Feb to plant them as they grow too much over autumn/ winter for us and don't seem to get as much chill time. We have just put them in the fridge for now to get the chill hours. Hope you have a lovely weekend. x

As was already said, it's never just one mouse. They breed several times a year and have large litters. If I were you, I would clear out that shed of anything that they could use as shelter, nesting material or food, and leave it empty for awhile. I have had mice use overturned flower pots as a winter nest. Maybe they'll move on to someone else's shed.

Gemma those look like bulbils. Elephant garlic in particular is known for forming them. It will make a bulb, but typically in 2-3 years. I would dig them up and plant them out more well spaced. If you don't want to wait the 2-3 years, then they should develop enough by next late spring/early summer to pull and use like a "green garlic". Very tasty.
