This Magic Mechanic Stops You from Playing! Here's How to Break It!

Magic has some very strange mechanics, and one of the weirdest is called Epic. When you cast a spell with the mechanic you don't get to play the game anymore, but you get a copy of the spell at each of your upkeeps. Let's talk about how we can actually make an Epic deck in commander and how to turn this weird and underpowered mechanic into something pretty fun.

Best way to play this is the white one (enduring ideal) in an enchantment deck when you already have Hivemind on the battlefield. Every opponent is forced to copy Enduring Ideal and if they aren’t an enchantment deck you just eventually win.

The main ways I usually do this are with [Proteus Staff] and [Hellcarver Demon], [epic experiment] with infinite mana, or if I have them all in had I flash cast them in response to each other with [leyline of anticipation]

How do you cast them all at once though? I'm wondering because you could do that only is you cast them at instant speed

Leyline of anticipation gives all your spells flash. So, as long as it's on the field with all other requirements, it can be done

Just think, Finale of Promise can copy it twice and I'm pretty sure you can also cast an increasing vengeance too with Promise to copy it an additional 4 times. Both need to be in your graveyard tho

Actually no yeah I was about to also comment about this. Not only is it a lot of snakes, it's a lot of very abusive snakes. See it's a green catd which means we can run it in a lands deck where most of our shenanigans are on our lands themselves. Then you have an unstoppable source of snakes.

You also can abuse channel abilities or other card abilities to still be able to interact with the table after locking yourself out of spells! Sky Turtle gets better every day…

Lithoform Engine is pretty key for a deck using an Epic spell. It can copy the original, and every upkeep you can copy the ability that has you copy the epic spell

My nekusar deck is built with neverending torment in mind. I haven't gotten to use it since I usually win or get taken out before I can even draw it. I'm just waiting for the moment I can exile all the important stuff from peoples decks.

I love the idea of playing the epic spells in the 12th doctor. Image casting a epic spell and then forcing your opponent to cast it aswell.

The best thing to do is try to copy the spell to get double value

If I understand correctly this should work. Finale of Promise and Increasing Vengeance. Cast Finale of Promis paying 10 for x targeting Eternal Dominion and Increasing Vengeance. Arrange the stack to copy eternal dominion 2 with Promise and 4 times with increasing vengeance.

And obviously you can do this with the other ones too instead. 49 snakes. Exile 49 cards. 7 enchantments. Or 7 instances of burn. Plus you can use activated abilities to copy more later

I've cast Eternal Dominion many times and only lost once after casting it. Add it to Narset and cast early just out value your opponent

I have a edh deck that makes infinite mana and then casts 1 of the epic spells with hivemind on the field and before it resolves disenchants the hivemind and then counter my own copy to lock my opponents out

Cant you also splice onto them, and the copies at the upkeep will have the spliced traits too? Letting you sorta get extra effects with them and sorta get the value of casting multiple spells.

The epic spells arent arcane, so you can only splice on everdream, fell beasts shriek and splicers skill, but you would indeed get the added text on the copies

I don't understand how Zevlor works with Epic. Like apparently it works but he specifically mentions casting a spell whereas Epic copies without casting, so what's up with that?

Zevlor only works on the first cast, but it’s especially good since if you’re copying your first cast you get that many copies every upkeep.

Note on copying epic spells: If you copy the spell from its upkeep trigger, you will not get additional upkeep triggers.

@@Sephiroth517 My bad! It functions a bit like an enchantment to me, so that's what I thought about. Maybe Hive Mind? In a blue/white enchantment deck, it would benefit you more than them, and screw them over on playing their deck.

it's not playable or worth the downside. you can't cast any spells for the rest of the game. if someone board wipes after the card, you cannot cast your commander or anything for the rest of the game. it's bad. it will always be bad.
