This OEM suspension system is so bad, it could literally destroy parts of the drivetrain, so we are going to build a 100% custom from scratch 3-link rear suspension that will help put the power to the ground without axle wrap or wheel hop.

Hey LT, probably like many others, I've been following you since the LML Duramax you built along with Austin on Power Nation. As an old hack who cut his teeth on the old IDS from the 80s, and again in the 2000s from my military service (6.2 and 6.5s in the HUMVEEs), I've learned a ton from your videos. Your ability to make everything understandable helps an old dog like me, learn new tricks! God Bless- Rob from Pace, Florida.

For those that don’t know, the pinion angle on the extended cab s10 is horrible. That’s why they typically have the cardan joints. Fixing the pinion angle issue will help eliminate this problem.

I think it's spring wrap. The tire hooks, the springs wrap up as far as they can (as evidenced with the marks on the driveshaft) and then something has to give and it's the tire. It breaks loose, the spring relaxes a little and it starts over.
@V8RJIM
@V8RJIM Ай бұрын
@@jeffreydurham5342 sure its going to have spring wrap as well, but it’s been documented on extended cab S10s about poor pinion angle, and it gets even worse when lowered….. this only exhasterbates the problem.

Hey LT, thanks for the great video. As an old school hot rodder it's really interesting that now you can see so much of the build on KZbin. We used to have to buy books and talk to really old school guys and figure all the stuff out. Then order things out of the catalogs and that involved filling out a form and sending out a check. It'll be like 6 to 8 weeks before we get parts. Thank you for the informative videos your doing a great job. This build is going to be fun! 👍

LT, I love your channel, and all the wonderful information that you share. I'm glad to see you hopping up an S10, making a Syclone updated model. Being you're wanting to autocross that platform there are two weak/flexible areas of that frame that you may want to plate and reenforce. One of them is right past the cab, around where the leafspring mounts are. The second area is at the beginning of the cab, around the firewall. You can also verify the flex in your video by watching your body panels in your slow motion clip of the axle hop. Keep doing the great work you do!!!

That suspension youre doing is awesome and for what you plan power wise is perfect. But I have a 96 S-10 SS and it has the anti wheel hop damper. Chevy put a knuckle on the passenger side of the axle tube on top. Theres a damper(looks like a shock but doesnt really move that much) that connects to the knuckle and theres another knuckle forward on the frame. Billstein makes a replacemnt for it too. No wheel hop.

I had a 68 elcamino that had horrible wheel hop. Even when it was in factory form. It had a very anemic 307, factory suspension with a coil spring rear. It was a horrible car to drive. I did a rear section with narrowed rails and rear axle. 4 link suspension with coil overs. I rebuilt the front suspension, new everything, before installing the new engine. I went with a heavily altered small block 327 backed by a powerglide. No idea what the horsepower was. 400 maybe ? With the new suspension setup, even with a narrowed axle, wide tires and a spool, the car drove amazingly well. Before you throw any type of horsepower at a car, you need to make sure the suspension, steering and brakes are capable of handling any new found power. Ive seen so many people throwing lots of power in cars and not taking care of those important things first.

Hey LT, Wouldn't a watt's link be a better setup for autocross than a panhard bar? I was curious about it back when i had my old 3rd gen firebird, but never got to try it out myself...
@LawrenceTolman
@LawrenceTolman Ай бұрын
the main benefit of a Watts link is there is zero lateral movement of the axle through the suspensions travel. a properly set up panhard bar will have very little side to side movement, especially if it has a longer length. So, would a Watts link be better? Yeah probably, but how much better is hard to say
@StationroadRatrods
@StationroadRatrods Ай бұрын
If my math is correct, a 3 foot long panhard bar that is level at ride height and rotates 15 degrees total (7.5 degrees on jounce and 7.5 on rebound) will move the wheels around 1 3/4” to the left or right depending on which side the bar is mounted. This would only happen during suspension travel so the diff should be centered at full weight ride height so it doesn’t look odd while it’s parked. I used a three foot bar as an example, but he could probably get closer to four feet if he mounted it on the outer end of one frame rail and then had the mount on the diff as close to the backing plate as possible, which would lead to even less deflection.
@chrisnorway
@chrisnorway Ай бұрын
@@StationroadRatrods 15 degrees is a lot, and equals a suspension travel of 9.4" with a 36" PHB. I'd be surprised if LT ends up with much more than half of that, given the 4x4 drive train, and intended multi-purpose use. Mainly due to stiffer springs than a pure drag race setup, (my assumption). I get 0.308" sideways travel from 36" x cos (7.5). Not much, less than 5/16". A 3.5 foot bar drops it down to 0.26" or just over 1/4". With less suspension travel, everything looks even better, so a PHB is perfectly fine for this use.

Going to all the effort of a full rear exit exhaust is nice in a sedan, coupe or wagon especially. With the problems you see ahead with getting it over the rear axle and not lifting the floor of the bed up to much, have you considered installing a single side exit boom tube. In conjunction with a big straight through muffler? In conjunction with the turbo it should keep the noise down and the flow up. At least that way you dont need to compromise to much with the rear suspension. Keep the outlet size down a bit to say 8 "by 1 1/2" and you will still have access to the rails for lifting. I have had side exits just in front of the wheels on a few utes over the years and as long as you get them nearly all the way out there was no vibrations or drone. Just a thought anyway. Cheers
