Nhl news and rumors today - We've seen trades and free agent signings lately, but this is a juicy topic we need to get into. Even watching nhl highlights of the quebec nordiques vs montreal canadiens especially, begs the question of a return or " bring back the nordiques " relocation given the arizona coyotes arena situation, or even the ottawa senators or florida panthers at times. But gary bettman is.. well, him. NHL hockey highlights trade rumours reaction goal horns quebec city nhl team habs fans might have a hand in this whole ordeal. Also, Now that the nhl 24 reveal trailer is upon us, hockey news will continue to trickle in and we'll cover it. Montreal canadiens quebec nordiques expansion is equally unlikely. nhl 2023

To my surprise, I became a Montreal fan in 2008. If Quebec gets a team again, Mtl would move 2nd in my heart and it would be weird, cause I used to be a Mtl hater and Qc lover. There are also people who were fans of the Canadiens in the first place too. I am from a divided family on the matter, my dad's side are die-hard Habs fans while my mum's side were die-hard Nordiques fans. Some of my Nordiques die-hard family did switch to cheer for Montréal while most just hate Montréal for the sake of hating Montréal. The argument is made that you wouldn't want to split Quebec fans into two teams, but then you have Ottawa and Toronto sharing a provincial fan base, and if you suggest Houston, then you split the Texas fan base with them and Dallas. I personally don't think that neither the exchange rate, nor the split fanbases are valid reasons to not go back to Quebec City. Yes, the Canadian dollar is weaker, but a passionate fanbase makes up for that. And more importantly, rivalries are always what make the most money and they help grow the game. As a Devils, I can confirm from experience. Seeing a mix of Devils, Rangers, and Flyers jerseys makes hockey so much more fun to follow here because it makes the game more intense, thus making it a hot topic, way more most other teams without them. Rival matchups are the matchups people crave for the most. I don't think the NHL realizes just how gold they're leaving on the table by not going back to Quebec City. Could you imagine the amount of publicity and TV viewership a Habs vs Nordiques playoff series would get? Especially today post-1996? It would be insane. Honestly, the NHL needs to stop overfocusing their efforts on the Sun Belt and realize that the fans that they already have deserve representation too. Don't get me wrong. I will defend the Atlanta Thrashers until my dying breath, but there are still many cities like Milwaukee and Portland that are on their knees begging for the opportunity to throw their money at the NHL, yet they keep turning down these win-win markets. And those cities are both in states without teams. Why not make Trail Blazers fans and Wisconsin sports fans watch NHL hockey? Any other sports league would pounce on these opportunities if they had the chance. This is part of why the league isn't growing. The league is letting their thirst for growing the them in non-traditional markets blind them from giving their core fanbase teams to cheer for. It alienates them. It's basically the league saying, "you're not important to us."
@LordGrantius
@LordGrantius 9 ай бұрын
The league doesn't care about fans, and is willing to shoot itself in the foot and pour money into difficult markets rather than support existing ones. Bettman also will not permit another Canadian team so long as he's in charge. If New York can support two teams with two more nearby, two more not too far - Toronto has 5 million, and another couple million nearby. They support varieties of junior teams. They could easily put another team near Toronto, and bring the Nordiques back. I know it's not as easy as it seems but it feels like there is zero interest in trying

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the NHL expands 4 times coming up in like 6 years, to Houston, Atlanta (yes a 3rd time), Milwaukee or SLC, and then finally Quebec. Arizona deserves a hockey team and they have some of the best and fastest-growing youth hockey in the west, they care a lot about hockey. Canada is taken for granted by the NHL. The players are scared to play here. The owners cry about the conversion rates despite knowing they are almost guaranteed sell outs on a nightly basis. At the very least, have more fans in the seats than 60% of the US NHL franchises. We're already outnumbered by the USA teams, its becoming boring to watch the NHL when Canada has next to no chance at getting a cup or getting players who are in their prime to sign for a team, unless they were drafted by said team. I can see why so many Canadians are now taken by minor league hockey. The tickets are cheaper and if you live in a small market, you're likely to see some future stars play for your home team because they're not concerned about taxes and such yet. They just care about playing hockey and want the pressure.

AZ is the perfect location, but it just hasn't worked out. Why play/watch hockey when you can play football? SLC is a cool idea, but I think culturally the sport and the ideologies wouldn't mix well. Very good video, but I have to voice my disagreement concerning the province of Quebec as being Habs' country. Most of the people from Quebec hate the Habs and switched to the Bruins or stayed with the Avalanche when the franchise left. They would get back in the Nordiques wagon in a heartbeat and we would once again have one of the best rivalry in the NHL, a rivalry that also exist in the Belle Province in the political, cultural and economical fields. You are 100% right though when you say no new hockey fan would be created. But then again, this in Canada; do we really need to have a new franchise in Guatemala to have new hockey fans? Why not create a great entertainment with great rivalries instead? I mean the whole world watches the Super Bowl because it is a great show and not because they have a football culture.

Don't know that Quebec would be able to consistently sustain a hockey club. When Winnipeg moved we were having the same conversations 10 years later, trying to get them back and then we got them but it's entirely obvious that Winnipeg could at any point go under, what makes Quebec any different? for the record, I would love the Nords back, having an Owen Nolan jersey with the Nordiques logo would be FIRE!

Unfortunately, the NHL is more interested in TV markets than butts-in-seats. The Phoenix metro area is something like the 4th-biggest TV market in North America, so keeping the Coyotes in Arizona is key for maximizing the number of eyeballs that won't get to see the game because of local area blackouts.

So it's okay for Alberta, a province with pretty much half the population of Quebec, to have 2 teams but it's not for Quebec ? Fairly sure you move the Coyotes to Quebec and you win on every front including getting new fans to watch and purchase NHL stuff, after all Arizona only has like roughly 7mil population and as we can see years after years, people don't want an NHL team there.

As a Canucks fan, I shouldn’t have anything to do with any eastern teams. But for me, I love the Identity of the Nordiques. Here in Canada every province has a rivalry: Vancouver-Victoria or Vancouver-Kamloops, Calgary-Edmonton, Saskatoon-Regina, Winnipeg-Brandon (that’s the weakest one), Ontario has like seven to eight, and Quebec has the St Lawrence Standoff of Montreal-Quebec City-Trios Riveres. I would love to see a team in the QUE. At the same time, I’ve always liked the Arizona teams (except the Cardinals). And it makes me really sad if the Coyotes aren’t going to be around.

Heck with it, I'll keep going, if/when NHL hockey returns to Quebec it will be worth it, I promise! Just hang in there! I don’t exactly agree with the fact that Canadiens fans and Nordiques fans are the same. There used to be a huge rivalry between Montreal and Québec City when the two teams were around. A lot of Nordiques fans are still very sour about the move and never converted to the Canadiens. Some Nordiques fans hate the Canadiens so much that when their team moved, they decided to cheer on Boston or Toronto just to piss off Canadiens fans. The rivalry is still very strong.

Gary is in love with southern markets. These new expansion teams are thriving because they have all the help the league can give them. They would never do the same corruption for a "new" Canadian franchise. As long as the league is THIS corrupt, I honestly don't want a team in Québec. The fans deserve better. Clean the NHL from top to bottom, shitcan anyone at any level who ever was suspected of any wrong doing. THEN give back a team to one of the greatest hockey capitals on the planet. Or option2:: move the entire city of quebec to Nevada or the Everglades so they at least get the VGK preferential treatment

I'm a Buffalo fan but for a decade now I'm been yelling for the NHL to bring back a team to Quebec City. Talk about fanbases or cities that deserve a team. It makes no sense to see a team like the Coyotes on life support year after year when there's tons of cities that want a team, and their fans would print money for The NHL...but hey, what do I know..complain about revenue and viewership, yet continue to support complete non-markets. Wonder what the issue is... Then I also get seeing a big city like Houston and Bettman being "that's a big market if we can make it work." At the same time you could give QC a team back and know that market would work. You can go to city of 2 million people, but in a market like that you're lucky for 8% of them becoming fans. Or you could go to a city with 900k people and know at least 85% of them are going to be fans.....and that would just be Quebec City too, as Johnny Hawkey mentioned, the majority of French Canadians would be supporting that team.

The problem is that the majority of Quebec city fans are still consuming NHL products, yes those who swapped teams are spending more individually, but all that merch of the Nordiques you mentionned still being sold is part of the problem too, guess who still owns the rights of the Nordiques to this day ? The NHL / Avalanche Why would they consider Quebec City equally to other cities, they already consume massively the NHL products including the products of a team that dont exist anymore, a new city with 1/2 the fans is equally worth it, Quebec fans would still spend that money regardless every year. They will also occasionally travel to empty arena to fill em up because they think it trolls the NHL, they are trolling themselves. You want a team in Quebec city, boycott all NHL products, the NHL only cares about money.

The other issue is if they move to quebec, they would go to the eastern conference, so some east team would have to go west. Only one that makes sense is detroit and they fought tooth and nail to be in the east. You could leave it 17/15 but that would be dumb and an unbalanced schedule that the team in the east who missed the playoffs by one point would complain about.

I think the point on the Habs splitting their fanbase is quite exaggerated. Many fans in Quebec City, whether of the Nordiques or some other team (if they were too young to follow the Nordiques), abhor the Habs. There's a whole sociocultural element that was associated with the Nordiques that represented independence, French autonomism, and other philosophies. The Habs, on the other hand, represents/ed a synthesis between Anglo-ism and French-ism -- something many forbade. This is why many people in Quebec City support Boston or other teams -- they couldn't force themselves to follow the Habs. Even for younger people, they've been reared in this tradition. This isn't to say that no Habs fans exist in the area, but it is to say that treating Quebec City as a Habs hub is pretty misleading.
