def the most impressive thing. My girlfriend is 100% proffesionally bi-lingual in English and Mandarin but switching for her takes a few moments to "get in the mind space". She told me its like a different personality in a way. And she's been bilingual her entire life.
@olliemartinelli40343 жыл бұрын
Tbh I have been bilingual (English and Italian) my whole life and the switching to me is very natural. Like the moment anyone speaks to me in English or Italian I can basically instantly reply with no issues or mixing up the languages. Ig it’s down to individual experience because I’m my household my dad only spoke to me in Italian and my mum only in english so for example at the dinner table the switch between languages was and is always continuous. Chinese and English are also two very different language compared to English and Italian but who knows it’s interesting

I very recently started Swedish and my main issue is being able to remember en vs ett (I've gotten so many questions wrong cus I couldn't remember if apelsin and citron are both en or just apelsin...not helped by the fact that I cannot see myself talking about lemons regularly) and how nouns inflect. Example from earlier today: Tjej, well MT is no good here because it likes to default to Flicka, and I didn't know any site that listed how to say: the plural, the "the" form and the "the" form's plural. I'm sure there is some logic but I've not picked it up by doing the bare minimum of 2 daily lessons on Duolingo. Will say though, VERY cool language (And I adore the word for spider, Jag tycker om spindeln.)

@@TheGreatBackUpVIDEOS Don't worry too much about en/ett, for kids born in sweden it comes naturally with years of training. Most people who didnt grow up here will be mistaking en/ett every now and then and with time they learn. In fact, as a swede, i had to google when to use en/ett as i don't know any logic behind it. It's just natural.... About the plural form(s) we dont use another word prior to the actual word such as (the) girl. We bend the actual word instead. one/En flick(a), two/två flick(or), the/they/them = flick(orna) the girls (thing) flick(ornas)..... man/män/männen,männens, apelsin,apelsinen,apelsinerna,apelsinernas, fisk,fisken,fiskarna,fiskens,fiskarnas etc :D you can find me at discord with the same nickname as here if you want to

An artist and polyglot! A true Renaissance man! I've learned tiny amounts of several languages (Polish, Dutch, Greek, Irish, Japanese, Hawaiian) and a slightly higher level in a few other languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Italian). It is such a beautiful challenge, and I've been inspired by this conversation to dig deeper, with more consistency, in a couple of those languages to really be able to identify as multilingual! I tried speaking Dutch in Amsterdam and was sorely disappointed when the person didnt understand me at all and just replied in English 😔😬😆

I don't think they didn't understand you. It's more of a cultural thing to immediately switch to English if someone doesn't comfortably speak Dutch (to the level of native language). As a dutchy living in Vietnam as an English teacher, I have to say we have a bit of a head start as it comes to languages. There are like 5 languages that are fairly close to Dutch and being in Europe we have easier access to many different languages of which some are pretty similar as well. Besides that even though we have a very small country we have over 600 dialects so we are used to pick up on variations of languages more easily. Not to take anything away from Wouter since he's mind boggling. Also Dutch has a very wide range of sounds and tones so pronunciation in most cases for us is a bit more easy to pick up as for example an English speaking person. I've been living in Vietnam for almost 4 yrs and I hardly speak any Vietnamese apart from the basics because I usually hang around with English speaking people and did not put a whole lot effort into it. That being said I can read and speak it fairly well without knowing what I'm saying. I can sing karaoke with almost perfect pronunciation even though I have no clue what I'm singing about. For Vietnamese or a lot of Asians in general it's very hard to speak a western language mainly because they never used their mouth/tongue in a certain way that westerners do when speaking. Yes you xiaoma and Wouter are differently in a different universe but I personally do think us Dutch have a head start for many different reasons.

Lexically they're 95% similar, but grammatically they're different and Afrikaans is a mixture of Dutch, Portuguese, Khoisan languages, even Indonesian and English and other languages to a lesser extent, so it's mostly not mutually intelligible. There are also A LOT of words that are spelt and pronounced the same but have completely different meanings in the respective languages.
@melanchorly76183 жыл бұрын
@@zulawoo Where I'm from in South Africa (South-West), most people speak with an accent similar to his here. The northerners speak with a "round" pronunciation of vowel sounds whereas us southerners pronounce them sharply. In the south we also tend to leave out letter in pronounciation (e.g. The way he pronounced "Ons" as "Os" or "Nooit' as "Nooi"). The northerners enunciate the "R" sound a lot as well, they really roll it out. We don't do that in the south.

He is not fluent, in the sense that he stops for a second before some words, even when he speaks Dutch (his native language): it is a bit his way of speaking. But the Italian was pretty good, easily a B1. If he was fully improvising, higher than B1, but I guess that he prepared a bit this kind of short introductions. He is surely skilled enough to work or have a non-trivial conversation in Italian. Other than a "è difficile per parlare", I do not remember clear grammar mistakes (there was a "due settimani", but it is not clear if it was a grammar mistake or a pronunciation mistake, I would go for the second). While speaking it happens even to natives to mix up a sentence (you start saying "è difficile..." but then you shift to a different structure), especially if you are switching between 23 languages. When I am speaking Spanish or English (for work) and I switch back to Italian (my native language) I often make this kind of mistakes.

We have been raised on tv in different languages with subtitles and the Netherlands is a very culturally diverse country that was built on trade with other countries.
