He doesn’t make $20,000 for changing a light. Tower worker are extremely under paid. I’m a rope access tech and we work with these guys sometimes. They’re lucky if they make $30 an hour. I’ve seen this same clip reposted hundreds of times. Who ever told you is full of crap.

@SmittyAccess Your right. I worked for the FAA as a technician. I used to climb microwave link and lighted navigational aid towers amongst others and we got a 25% hazardous duty pay for the shift. If you were on a tower for an hour or your whole shift you got 25% for the shift. The government does not always provide the safety gear you need. We used to climb with a safety person. They would either observe or climb also depending on the need. There was an accident. I was almost killed due to a falling tool from my partner. This was a small tower of only 200ft. Got a life long injury from my climbing belt. We were suppose to have harnesses not belts. Injuries like mine is why OSHA switched to harnesses. My career of 20 years ended because of their lack of following their own regulations. It wasn’t worth it and it certainly wasn’t 20k dollars. That’s the short story.

Maybe the bulb itself is 20,000? Enterprise equipment can get ridiculously expensive. It’s not like any of these tick-tock knockoff videos have to do any research or be even remotely factual, like any of the Ai voices YT Shorts about military vehicles.

His name is Kevin Schmidt, he works for Sioux Falls Tower & Communications, and he isn’t paid $20,000 every time he climbs a tower. His buddy from work got a drone and decided to practice by filming Kevin’s ascent one day…they posted the video, but his salary was never disclosed. Someone reposted it with bogus info that he made $20,000 per climb, and that story took off like wildfire. Kevin Schmidt has done 1 interview only about the falsehoods, he stated that he is absolutely not paid $20,000 per climb, but declined to state his yearly salary…which, good for him, he shouldn’t have to. This is a perfect example of how fast lies can spread when people continue to circulate them without doing any research

I use to climb radio towers to change lights. Some towers 300' tall, some about 600' and a few 1500'. I was never paid that kind of money to change a lamp. If i was lucky, I would get a few hundred dollars. When i climbed towers back in the 1970s, i would always test the lamp before making the climb and take an extra lamp along for good measure. A 1500' antenna would take quite a while to climb and come back down. When the job was finished, I was worn out.

The guys who end up climbing THESE towers definitely command over $150 or so per hour, but factoring in the benefits and stuff it adds up. He had to climb a 500 foot tall radio transmission tower to change the light bulb. He had a harness with clip hooks like the fellow in the video had. @@Barrybullthiefpoutersbut flying in a plane or being up high in a skyscraper is very different to climbing a giant tower. Being in a plane at 13 km up you are sitting inside a vehicle where you don't feel the wind racing past you with professional pilots who you can trust to get you safely to you destination. Same for being up in a skyscraper. You don't feel the wind going past you and you are safe inside. Where as climing a tower you feel the wind, you do it yourself, which can make you tired, and if you don't do it correctly, aka with a safety harness, and you slip, you fall to your death. Personally I'd rather work at the top of that tower being lifted by a helicopter then having to climb to the top myself, to then have to climb all the way down as well.
