@@Solotocius sloped rear screens still have dust, dirt, bird poo land on them and if not clean when they get wet they can be near on impossible to see through. Never more so than now with rear windows sloping so much. Older sedans with near vertical glass didn’t present half the issue.

@@GeeeEm61 it's the exact opposite measurement. The more vertical the rear windscreen stands, the more dust and water build up due to the airflow not being able to wipe it off. That's why it's mostly SUVs and HBs with rear wipers and not sedans/liftbacks.

@@Solotocius I agree with you that SUVs & hatchbacks with vertical rear windows do need wipers. But so do the very sloped rear windows on modern sedans. Perhaps you own one of these cars with a sloped rear windows, like I have in the past. The air flow takes care of water, as you say. My point is that if the rear windows isn’t washed for some time, and not everyone washes their car frequently, the window has dirt and dust settle on it when the car is parked. Once this built up grime gets wet, it’s difficult to see through, and needs a wiper/washer fitted! My reference to vertical windows was in regard to cars that have a traditional boot/trunk, ie, the old style traditional sedan (notchback), of which there are very few of any these days.

If the air hasn't separated before going over the rear window a windscreen wiper would have to work very hard in the laminar airflow and could actually really aerodynamically upset the car at speed. Most hatchbacks have a spoiler to separate airflow above the rear window (which is why the back of a car gets so dirty as the air is picking up dust and stuff) FYI

I have a crosstour. If its raining out, the rear wiper is used when i start driving and then maybe if i get stopped at a light for a while. Rain never gets caught on the rear windshield after im moving

Why do they do it? To save money. Same reason they replace all the controls, stereo, satnav, etc. with an iPad- it costs about 95% less than making them all seperately. You can't actually USE any of the features unless you stop, but they don't care.
