Follow the money. It's all about cheaping out. Much cheaper to have touch sensitive buttons, much cheaper to ditch physical controls and put it all on the single touchscreen - which would be there anyway and which are pretty cheap nowadays. You may say "uh what's the cost of one turn signal stalk?" but it adds up.

It's because the "buttons" on the Model S and X with the yoke seem to be so much more sensitive to touch. In my '24 Model 3, I can have my thumb on the button, but it doesn't do anything until I actually press down. Which is weird.... Cause it's still a capacitive button, not a physical one, and it gives you a little haptic feedback bump that ABSOLUTELY FEELS like you pressed a physical button.

@@deputydd4364 Buttons on/around steering wheel works perfectly fine. Citroën had indicator buttons at around the wheel in the 70's+. Easy to get to without moving hand from the wheel. But its Tesla so of course they put the button right where normal people grip.

Yeah... Like buttons on a wheel, placed in a way where they're just as intuitive to use as a stalk. And an audible click and a display of what's next to you showing up on the center screen to let you know the signal is on. For some reason, the capacitive buttons on the Model S and X are a lot more sensitive and more likely to be accidentally enabled compared to on the refreshed Model 3.
