Geoff let his barbershop flag fly on this one. Plus, Kathy asked him to do this song and I think the love just shines through.

Definitely heard those barbershop chords; having sung bbshp myself, for decades. Gorgeous!

That you love Geoff’s voice as much as I warms my heart. This rendition seems simple & uncomplicated; but as you listen, Geoff’s musical intelligence, long vocal training, and sensitive arrangements become obvious. He’s a rare, exceptional talent.

Geoff's voice hovers somewhere between reverent and playful. He can be such a nerd and make you laugh with his quirky humor, and then melt your heart with those rich deep notes. I think Geoff's voice is unique in just how many overtones his singing produces. It creates a warmer, richer, more "full" voice. It's that little "extra" that average listeners can't explain. You can really hear it in stripped down songs like this.

I consider this to be the most beautiful of his videos. It's so gentle and perfect both musically and visually. Those really deep notes always sound to me like listening to a cello. Not surprising I suppose.

In one of his "how to sing low" videos he says that a vocal coach he had had him use vocal fry up and down his range to minimize the breaks between "passages" (vocal term for the parts of your range)

I believe he did this one for Kathy- so thanks to her LOL. This is one of my favorite songs and videos by Geoff. It's such a gorgeous display of his range and emotion. It also shows off his arrangement talent which is 🔥🔥🔥

So, I asked my husband who while not a singer or musician loves music enough that he knows quite a lot about how it's produced these days. He says that Geoff can sound in such perfect harmony with himself because when he is in the studio recording one of the tracks he can hear any previous tracks he has already recorded so he is able to hear where he needs to take the track he is currently doing so that when they are put together the harmonies are absolutely perfect. That man has the most beautiful base voice I have ever heard and his range is almost unbelievable!!! He has just shy of a 5 octave vocal range. I find that both awe inspiring and beautiful.

The most beautiful song from Geoff. My favorite of his solo projects. The multiple parts of the song blend so well and whisk you off to another world. I get your reaction as it melts my heart. Thank you for reacting to this song.

As others have commented, Geoff did this one because Kathy likes it. Apparently it's popular with choirs but being in band, I'd never heard it. Two fun things about the video: if you look close, you can see the seated Geoffs say "cut!" at the very end. Love the tiny touch of imperfection that shows how perfect the vocals are. And two, the piano we see is a half step out of tune, which they didn't know until they were ready to start filming. It sounds awful against the in-tune playback. So this also showcases Geoff's acting skill, because there's no hint in the video that anything was less than perfect. All we know is that it sounds divine.

Geoff did this one for Kathy. This song is from the mid 1800s, with the fur trappers going into the Appalachians to check for furs that the native Americans may have collected.

I've been rewatching your Geoff/Voiceplay reactions. Do you remember in the Hearing Loss video, he sat and played an out of tune piano? That was this piano. He had already recorded the instrumental track, of course, but needed a piano for the shoot. Layne knew a guy and they dragged this one in. So, Geoff had to play the accompaniment on this lovely but nasty sounding thing while he "sang" all of the parts. I can just imagine the cacophony melting his brain while he managed to look so sweet and adorable while doing it!

At 6:18-6:20 (in this, not the original) if you listen really closely you can hear a transition in his voice as he goes up. You can hear it better at the end of Hellfire, in the phrase "and she will be mine or she will burn", in that 'she will' you can hear a distinct change.

I’d never heard of this song when he posted it, so I looked up the original first. It felt flat, and did absolutely nothing for me. Then I listened to this, and Geoff breathed life into it. I listened to it every night before going to bed for months. But if the original came on the radio, I’d change the station. Also, Geoff has a video on his channel about Kathy’s hearing loss. I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but he said her particular type of hearing loss changes what various notes sound like, and as an example of what things sound like to her he played a bit on this piano to also show how out of tune it was.

It's a song that's soothing and peaceful with pretty harmonies. It reminds me a little bit of Home Free singing their version of Helplessly Hoping. Both are slower songs that let the pretty harmonies do the work instead of adding percussion. 😊

I have always hated this song. In fifth grade (many decades ago) our teacher had us sing this and only this for music class all year long. Once a week we had to sing this song for an entire year. And then I got her again in sixth grade 😡and once again I had to sing this song once a week for the entire year. I almost didn’t listen to it because she ruined it for me. But as usual Mr. Castellucci has made me appreciate it once more. It is a really pretty song and he turned it into a beautiful piece. I’m pretty sure I heard somewhere that you are on his Patreon. You really need to go see the BTS for this. The piano was not in tune with his piano. So while he’s playing in coordination with the recorded version it sounds positively hideous. And at the end he shows us. His face as he’s listening to this horrible out of tune rendition is absolutely hilarious.
