They really kinda HAD to step up the drum game, since perc was the weakest caption in 2013. Winning with a 6th place drum line is VERY difficult today....only marginally easier for 84 Cadets and their 7th place perc score (ahhhh....if only their drums were a couple of tenths worse that year....I'd have my ring.)

As a non-mallet player, I've been in the DCI community long enough to know groups like The Cadets, Cavaliers, Boston Crusaders, Bluecoats(sorta fits in the list) are the typical "'East Coast" type groups that have similar approach(high velocity, everything from the wrist). West Coast is more fluid, touch driven(can't really describe it, cause I've never played it or learned that style).. Anyway, my point is, I love that Adam picked up on those styles rather quickly. West Coast and East Coast drum corps, not only from a fundamental approach but from a mentality perspective, have totally different styles. That diversity makes this activity so interesting and have so much depth. It helps bring a new level of appreciation to the art. Love this video! Another thing after watching the whole video. On top of the individual responsibilities you mentioned, learning how to play together and in time while potentially being 60-70 yards APART from the farthest person in the ensemble. That's a SUPER tough challenge for the individual to understand and adapt to. Doing this inside Lucas Oil is even more difficult with it's boomy environment. Especially since most of the venues that these guys play at all summer are outdoors.

2010 and 2014-2016 Bluecoats are arguably some of their most intensive shows for marching and playing, in a while. 2010 and 2015 don't get much credit at all, but they have some really good drill moments, where players are literally sprinting across the field.

Bluecoats got my attention in '05. I went to a local show in my town in '04 and was surprised at how young they were, I thought they were older( just learned about DCI in '01). Anyway saw the show and thought it was ok, but '05, '06, '07 is when they stepped it up and I started paying attention, although my love was for BD. '07 show also beat the Blue Devils Championship show during the season. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5PKiH2IjpVgbsU (my favorite part of the '05show) after it being the 2nd year they started using electronics and voice.

"Itd be so loud as well in person" In general, seeing dci in person is very loud. For Carolina Crown, loud is an understatement. When I saw Crown 2019 live, the opening note felt like a wall of sound punching me in the face, and it just keep getting louder. And of course, their perfect quality of sound makes it seem even louder. My goosebumps were so big the hairs on my body practically jumped off my skin. If you ever have the chance to watch dci live, and specifically Crown or any of the top tier corps you've been watching, don't pass it up. Its breathtaking.

Hey I'm not sure if anyone has said this yet, but the Crown Brass wasn't playing all the music in the video you saw. Part of the reason why their brass sounds so good is because they don't destroy their faces during rehearsal. They don't play all the big FFFF moments like the brass hit at the very end in the Crown set.

Hi Adam! Percussionist band director here. I'd like to bring a couple things to your attention about the second performance as I think you'll enjoy them. First, the Harloff brothers who run the brass program at Carolina Crown have a method book for band called "Inside the Circle." I use this book with my students all year long as it touches on tone and tuning much more than any method book I've encountered for band before, and it is based completely around their work with Carolina Crown. I'm a little surprised you didn't mention the feel more of the final movement of their show. The closer is based off of a folk tune originally in 13/16, so they adapted it to put the performers' feet in a 4/4+7/8 pattern. If you go back and watch the first half of the closer, you'll notice the stutter step the marching members have to do at the end of every other bar to achieve this. It adds an extra level to the performance as the musicians are no longer moving their feet in a consistent motion. Really enjoying your content!

My first experience with Carolina Crown was in 1998 when I marched with The Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps. Carolina Crown placed 11th that year with their show of Alfred Reed music, which included Russian Christmas Music. They've been one of my favorite corps ever since.

I was a member of Crown’s front ensemble in 2017, and I can say for sure that the music writing team is top notch. Jim Ancona writes the front ensemble parts and there’s definitely a ton of double lateral rolls (actually not independent rolls) - and they’re all specifically notated rhythms as well, so each player will have the same roll interpretation as each other to keep the sound really clear. I think 2019 was one of my all time favorite shows from Crown, 2017 was a bit of a weird year with a start to a different direction and 2019 was a much stronger realization of that direction. And yes, the brass is deafening in person lol

Also I highly recommend watching older shows and seeing how the whole competition field has progressed over the years and how many levels of performance have been added. I personally marched in. Thanks for the video! It’s awesome to watch the sport/art of marching get more popularity. I highly recommend listening to the finals recording of this show to get the full Crown brass feeling. The Vic Firth clip is good but there are parts that I believe have drum sounds enhanced over the brass. Also check out 2016 as I think you would like the blend of sounds! 😁

I also recommend watching the Bluecoats 2019 show again like on your own time with the brass to hear how the pit fits in with the whole Corp. great video keep up the good work

Aaaand that's why Crown's brass won. Only complaint was when I saw them live I was on the left side and the ONLY time they went over there was the ballad for 1 minute. But Bloo has some great moments as well. Was a really great year for DCI, unfortunately that will have to last another year.

When a horn line forms a line and moves to the sideline, such as at 23:58, it's called a company front, something corps have been doing for as long as the activity has been around.

Just some technical terms for you, Drill is the designs and shapes the performers are marching and making on the field. The shows are in roughly 4 parts in a marching or dci show that are in this order: Opener, Ballad, Drum Feature, and Closer. The Drum Feature is sometimes considered as apart of the closer it depends on the person The "slow part" as you called it is the Ballad part. Hope I am helping in some way!
@MintyChipArt
@MintyChipArt 4 жыл бұрын
Forgot to add but some shows depending on the staff/director will call them by Movements as you said in your video, the Opener is often called Movement 1 but in some circumstances it can be two movements. The Ballad is most often the 2nd movement but if the Opener is split into 2 parts it would be the 3rd movement. From that I have seen when it has movements the Drum Feature is always combined with the Closer for one long movement (Often called Movement 3) but I may be wrong

Hi! I've watched a few of your videos. You are very enthusiastic and that is why enjoy it. One thing, I'm from PA a couple hours from Canton. It doesn't sound like Cantonese, but "can't" that's "on". (It may be because of the dialect of western OH & Southwestern PA). I learned how to play & march in high school. My band director was a DCI judge. The first "tapes" I saw were of Madison Scouts, Blue Devils, Santa Clara & Cadets. Later on, I was involved in corps even teaching. I've had the opportunity to meet the directors of Phantom, Blue Devils, Madison & Crossmen. As many here I attended a lot of drum corps events including finals as a spectator, participant & staff member. The answer you asked about getting crisp & clean, practice, practice & practice along with great instructors that can convey experience & skill to others. The rehearsals typically are grouped by sections for a good portion of rehearsals. Musical exercises are fundamental to gain dexterity & synchronize patterns (concentrating for percussion technique, hand position posture & transitioning along with scales, brass articulation, tonation, scales to extend range, breathing, posture & low/loud full & effortlessly, and add-in marching except pit). Marching technique & movement with music is done early to get familiar moving. All the while the Pit is relentlessly pushing for speed, precision, flexibility, octaves & consistent timing. The one segment is ensemble work getting all sections getting used to playing with the other sections so it's not a competition but a smooth blend. Time is carved out to cover aspects that are required by deadlines. It all depends on where a corps is (beginning of winter rehearsal, middle or end) will dictate what is covered. Corps need working $$ so many get paid to do parades/openings. Songs need to be mastered (parade songs & traditional standards) earlier than the competition songs. Music for the show will begin to start appearing and they (staff) start working to get the group cohesive & do the music. It can be pulled together through the season, but it's likely it takes years of training to get to a competent secure level. I'm not stating a new player can't achieve a level of skill, it's hard if all were new.

Crown tends to not hold out their notes at full volume in rehearsals just to help with the players' embouchure (the muscles around the mouth that help us play) this way they can preserve their "chops" and perform better in competition. I mean, they did win the best brass in 2019.
