Black and white does have its merit over color, such as imparting a more serious mood, along with better depicting of details. Black and white films often show minute details on someone's face, something that is lost in color. As someone who watches old movies such as The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, that movie's tone is due in part to the choice of using black and white even though color was available at that point in the 1960s. Also, movies such as Casino Royale (2006) use black and white to show James Bond in the past. Black and white have their own merits just as color films do.
